Cost of dental treatments for children
Nowadays, every person insured by law knows that going to the dentist is not only uncomfortable for the patient, but also for their wallet. The cost of many of the services offered and rendered must be borne by the insured person.
But what about children who are co-insured with a parent? Here too, the fundamental benefits are covered by the statutory health insurance, and this is more in the area of dental treatment for children than in adulthood. As soon as some of the first teeth are visible, many parents want to present their offspring to the dentist. Later, one or the other small caries hole in one of the milk teeth may be added or a tooth must be extracted.
Dental treatment costs – what does the health insurance cover?
Basically, the following currently applies with regard to the assumption of costs by the statutory health insurance companies: Prophylactic measures in the mouth area, the preparation of the tooth index and (repeated) oral hygiene instructions – particularly important for children – are paid in principle. Likewise, other preventive protective measures for the dentition such as sealing caries-free fissures in some of the posterior teeth in the permanent dentition and measures for fluoridation, which serve to harden the enamel.
Prophylaxis should be at the top of the agenda for children’s teeth anyway, which is why many parents also opt for additional, chargeable additional services such as the sealing of caries-free milk teeth or all teeth in permanent teeth, professional tooth cleaning or the use of chlorhexidine varnishes, which are normal Restore oral flora and work against the caries bacteria.
When changing from deciduous teeth to permanent teeth, it sometimes happens that individual teeth that are already surrounded by permanent neighboring teeth have to be removed, but the coming tooth is still waiting. In this case, a so-called placeholder is adjusted, which looks like braces and ensures that the adjacent teeth do not close the gap into which the future tooth is supposed to grow. The costs for this are covered by the statutory health insurance companies, usually no additional payment is necessary.
And what about a real brace? Insofar as there is no predominantly cosmetic or marginal correction, i.e. the medical effort is also necessary from the perspective of statutory health insurance, the fund pays 80 percent of the costs for minors. In the case of siblings, up to 90 percent are even taken over. If the treatment is successfully completed, the parents have the prospect of being reimbursed for the previously paid own contribution. Of course, there is more information about this at every pediatric dentist – in Munich, for example, from Dr. Hancock-Diener, the children’s dentist Munich.
And of course, and especially for children, a beautiful smile is priceless!
