Dentistry: When does basic insurance pay??
Many dental treatments in Switzerland are not paid for by the mandatory basic insurance. Here Swiss people are on their own without any additional insurance. However, this does not mean that the basic insurance in dentistry does not cover any costs.
When the basic insurance for dental treatment takes effect is regulated in Chapter 5 "Dental treatment" of the Nursing Benefits Ordinance. Articles 17 to 19a are relevant. Basic insurance pays for dental treatments, for example, if they:
- "Are caused by a serious, unavoidable disease of the chewing system"
- "Are caused by a serious general illness or its consequences"
- "Are necessary to treat a serious illness and its consequences"
The compulsory basic insurance also covers the dentist when his work is "necessary to support and ensure medical treatment", for example with a heart valve replacement or with radiotherapy. Finally, she finances dental treatments that are necessary due to a birth defect or an accident.
Attention: The basic insurance usually does not cover tooth damage due to incorrect oral hygiene.
If the cost of compulsory basic insurance is taken into account, the treating dentist submits a detailed cost estimate to the health insurance company. Together with a trusted dentist, she checks the matter. If it gives the green light, the treating dentist can start treatment. Payment is made directly between the dentist and health insurance.
If you change your health insurance during ongoing treatment, the new provider is not bound to cover the costs. He can check this again and, if necessary, come to a different result.
When additional dental insurance makes sense
Since the basic insurance for dental treatment only pays in exceptional cases, dental insurance is not only useful. In view of the high costs incurred for different dental services, dental insurance in Switzerland is a significant relief for the wallet.
Average cost of dental treatment in Switzerland
treatment | costs |
---|---|
tooth filling | 200 francs |
Pull wisdom teeth | 500 to 800 francs per tooth |
root canal treatment | 500 to 850 francs |
implants | 1,000 to 10,000 francs |
braces | 4,000 to 12,000 francs |
Many insurers offer dental insurance. The following table shows what costs you can expect in Switzerland.

Some providers have different forms of their dental insurance in the program. A comparison at the Helsana health insurance company shows how the benefits differ:
- With Light, 75 percent of the costs up to CHF 300 per year are reimbursed
- With bronze, it is 50 percent to 1,000 francs
- For silver, 75 percent to 2,000 francs have already been taken over
- In the gold variant, dental insurance pays 75 percent to 3,000 francs
The benefits of Visana Dental Insurance are staggered in a similar way:
- Class 3: 50 percent up to CHF 600
- Class 5: 50 percent to 1,200 francs
- Class 7: 75 percent to 1,500 francs
- Class 10: 75 percent to 5,000 francs
The costs vary greatly depending on the provider and scope of services. Expensive dental insurance does not automatically have to be the best. Cheap dental insurance can also offer a balanced mix of price and performance in Switzerland. Take advantage of the opportunity to compare several offers.
Sometimes it is possible that dental insurance in the form of a separate contract is more expensive than under a comprehensive outpatient supplementary insurance. A comparison can also pay off here.
