  • Half of the children and adolescents need braces. For them, additional dental insurance with a focus on orthodontic services is particularly worthwhile.

While it used to be the pride of the German health care system, today it is the obvious “gap”: Kassenpatienten to get hardly any money for dentures. Almost everyone in their mid-40s needs one. The bill for this can easily be 2000 euros per tooth. The gaps in reimbursement literally fill private dental insurance.

They are often cheap, and just a few euros should provide services for a few thousand euros. To this end, it is often advertised that dental supplementary insurance can be obtained without waiting, even during treatment. Can everything be right? Our guide 2019/2020 clarifies the most important questions on the topic.

Whether dental insurance makes sense or not depends on the quality you want for your dentition and whether you can easily pay the necessary treatment costs in case of doubt.

This video from the Bavarian Radio shows a good summary of the costs of the different types of dentures.

1. What does dental supplement insurance pay for dentures?

With dentures, the health insurance companies pay about half the cost of standard treatments, i.e. the bare minimum.

1.1. Crown – made of ceramic

When the decision was made that the health insurance should be relieved, the crown was the first thing that was no longer available in dentistry without additional payment. Since then, there have been new developments and better materials. The special ceramic crown has found its way in.

Statutory health insurance still pays 112 euros at an average cost of 550 euros. That means approx. 440 euros remain open. Some of the supplementary insurance cover costs, but not all of them and not all of them.

1.2. Highest craftsmanship: implants

The implant is one artificial tooth root, on which a prosthesis or crown is placed. Implants are very tight and therefore last a long time. In addition, the surrounding natural teeth are protected when using implants. However, it is a private service. The GKV only pays the usual fixed allowance for dentures of around 430 euros. However, that is not enough for a long time.

  • An implant costs 1,200 euros.
  • If a bone structure is required for this, it costs another 800 euros.
  • The necessary crown, which still has to be put on, is not yet included. In this combination, this is more expensive than a simple crown and devours another 700 euros.

Together, this results in expenses of 2,700 euros per tooth. The protection of private insurance companies is very different here. Many assume 90% of the open amount for implant and bone augmentation. But especially with the very cheap tariffs, people often don’t pay here.

1.3. Well filled – inlays and plastic fillings

Very high quality, Solid dental fillings are called inlays and usually have to be specially made in the laboratory. Gold costs between 280 and 380 euros, ceramics 350 to 500 euros. Supplementary insurance often pays around 90% of the uncovered amount. If an inlay falls out, the private supplementary health insurance must pay even if the treatment was carried out before the contract was concluded.

Since the cash registers only pay for the heavily criticized amalgam filling, that is between 25 and 50 euros per tooth.

Plastic fillings, which GKV takes over for the front teeth, are cheaper than inlays and still better than amalgan.

treatment price
Crown € 550
implant € 2,700 implant + crown
inlay € 350 Filling / ceramic € 180

2. Professional teeth cleaning

It is recommended, two times a year to have professional teeth cleaning (dental prophylaxis) carried out. During the approximately one-hour treatment, i.a. Remove harmful deposits from the teeth and between the teeth and apply a fluoride gel as a protective film to the teeth.

Dental propylase costs between 60 and 150 euros and is not part of the compulsory catalog of the legal. Some insurance companies such as Techniker Krankenkasse or AOKs subsidize intensive cleaning once a year with around 40 euros. A dental policy states that 100% of this is to be paid, whereby the maximum initial payment per year is so highly capped that ultimately only half of the costs are borne. Only the Inter really pays everything from our computer.

Given the much higher cost of other dental treatments, prophylaxis can from a cost perspective but also neglected become.

3. Orthodontics

For adults, the health insurance only pays in the case of very serious jaw misalignments. Otherwise you stay for one braces on several thousand euros sit. Even private insurers do not want to incur expenses and only reimburse up to a maximum if they pay for adults at all. Arag, for example, pays a maximum of € 1000 per adult for a contracted adult.

If the doctor ascertained the deformities in the jaw before the insurance was taken out, the insurance company does not pay anything for the corresponding treatments.

But even or especially if you take out supplementary dental insurance for the child, particular importance should be attached to orthodontic services, as explained in the next chapter.

4. Additional dental insurance for children

The health check

One of the questions asked is whether it already exists Teeth are missing or whether you look at it periodontitis (Gum inflammation) ill is. Sometimes it is also required that a dentist still have a Assessment created for the current condition of the bit. This is more likely to happen to older applicants. There are also dental supplements without health issues, e.g. by Ergo and the Munich Association. These are logically more expensive.

Required until the 18th birthday treatments for orthodontists every second child.

The health insurance only pays from the 3rd severity and then usually only 80%. Are the upper and lower incisors, for example, edge to edge, so if one slight cross bite is still available nothing taken over. Corrections that lead to the result faster or are more beautiful will not be reimbursed, nor will retainers that fix the treatment result in the long term.

The dental insurance in our calculator are also intended for children.
