Normal fear of the dentist or dental phobia?
Many people like to push a visit to a dentist or go with a queasy feeling in the stomach to the dentist. That is normal. This slight dental fear does not necessarily speak for a dental phobia
Strong physical symptoms as an indication of pathological fear of the dentist
In the dental phobia, so the pronounced dental fear, the physical symptoms are often violent already at the thought of a dental treatment. The feelings of anxiety are then accompanied by tachycardia, sweating and trembling or convulsions. A clear indication of a dental phobia is also when even the strongest toothache endured or attenuated by medication instead of going to the dentist.
Another symptom of dental phobia is the so-called avoidance behavior. As with all other anxiety disorders, people with dental anxiety try to avoid the trigger of anxiety. In the case of dental phobia, for example, people say dental appointments again and again – or even turn around at the front door of the practice. As a rule, dental phobics only go to the treatment room when the pain has become unbearable.
Causes of fear of the dentist
In many cases, the fear of the dentist is due to unpleasant childhood experiences at the dentist. For many a dentist of the old school, it has long been quite common to demand from patients a dose of supposedly healthy strength and pain tolerance. This attitude of “Indians know no pain” is an ideal breeding ground for dental anxiety – and often the beginning of a process that leads to further dental discomfort and other personal factors leading to a dental phobia. Psychologists also explain that dental phobia is one of the most intimate regions of the body. It is natural that you do not let a stranger in there without ado.
Basically applies to anxiety disorders, including the pathological fear of dentures, that the phobia can arise even without a recognizable cause.
Much understanding for fear of the dentist
Dentist fear, that is the fear of the dentist, is one of the few fears for which almost every human being understands. For fear of spiders or an elevator, for example, listeners usually respond with a shrug. Quite different with the fear of the dentist: In the dental fear, most people can empathize quite well. And even tough guys you can see the fear of the dentist.
