Dentist münster, hypnosis – not only when you are afraid of the dentist

Hypnosis – not just for fear of the dentist

Dental hypnosis is helpful in the treatment of children and adults with more or less pronounced dental phobia. We achieve a high level of compliance (readiness to treat), especially for children whose willingness to treat cannot be addressed via the ratio. For everyone else, long-term dental treatment becomes a pleasant, low-pain, time-shortening experience.

What is Dental Hypnosis??

Modern clinical hypnosis is a scientifically developed method of going into a trance. In this state between sleep and wakefulness, attention is strongly focused on inner experience. You can still perceive all the events, the contact with the conversation remains, but the current events move so far away that feelings of fear and perception of pain are reduced. The patient feels that the treatment is pleasant.

What are the requirements for hypnosis??

The prerequisites for hypnosis are a trusting relationship between doctor and patient, mental health, imagination and understanding of language. Small children and dementia can therefore not be hypnotized. About 80% of the population is easy to hypnotize, 10% even very easily. Anxious patients with negative ideas about dental treatment are particularly susceptible to positive hypnotic images.

How is hypnosis experienced??

There are completely different feelings here. The depth of hypnosis is largely determined by the willingness to drop. Almost all patients describe treatment in hypnosis as massively time-shortening and relaxing, which also makes longer sessions, which are necessary for complex, aesthetically reconstructive total renovations, more pleasant (see case study: total renovation). Treatment is only possible for patients with massive avoidance behavior. Gagging stimuli or cheek tension are switched off and the team is given easier and better treatment.

How does a hypnosis treatment work??

In advance, I collect information for individual hypnosis through questionnaires and personal conversations and gain the necessary trust. To initiate the trance, I stimulate deep abdominal breathing through a calm speech and draw attention to parts of the body or inner images. The experience is deepened by addressing the five sensory channels such as seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. The depth of a hypnosis is subject to fluctuations, similar to that of sleep.

When is hypnosis treatment useful??

For adults with a neutral relationship to dental treatment, deep relaxation is a pleasant experience. Even more sensitive patients experience dental treatment with less pain and relaxation. Patients with more or less pronounced dental treatment phobia are facilitated or made possible by treatment.

Children go into trance particularly quickly. During the treatment, we tell stories in which we positively incorporate all sounds and touches. The child is continued from the dental treatment into a changed state of consciousness (trance) in which dental treatment becomes a positive experience. So originally fearful children like to come back. The fear is mostly blown away.

Hypnosis treatments without a syringe?

Hypnosis changes the perception of pain in the brain. This often eliminates the need for anesthesia if the patient so desires. In order not to disturb the trance due to pain, the mouth is usually numbed. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis does not replace anesthetic injections. The setting of the syringe is often no longer noticed. The amount of local anesthetic can be significantly reduced, so treatment is also possible during pregnancy.

Risks associated with treatment in hypnosis

Hypnosis has no side effects in mentally healthy people. However, you should allow enough time before you start your everyday activities after rest and relaxation and do not immediately participate in traffic.

What costs does the health insurance cover??

Hypnosis treatment is not a service of the statutory health insurance companies and the dental fee schedule. In free agreement, the costs are based on the individually required effort for the hypnosis treatment. The first session costs, as the effort is greater, € 120.00, in special cases even more, afterwards it will be significantly cheaper. After a few sessions, almost all of them no longer need any hypnosis initiated by me, they know the way to the trance alone.

What are the alternatives to this treatment for anxious patients??

In contrast to hypnosis treatment, where the thoughts are led away from the treatment, behavior therapy teaches how to deal with the treatment situation in many sessions. Of course, anesthesia treatment is also an option. Apart from the costs, risks and side effects of anesthesia, there is no learning effect like hypnosis. Most patients lose their fears and, due to the positive treatment experience, can do without further hypnosis sessions.

. Modern dental hypnosis has nothing in common with so-called show hypnosis! In hypnosis, expressions and actions against your own will are not possible. Dental hypnotherapists are obliged to use hypnosis only for the benefit of the patient and to have their own behavior supervised.
