Diesel: 5 reasons why you should switch to an electric car now

Diesel air pollution is affecting the quality of life in many cities

The air here in germany is very polluted. According to the EU limit value, only 40 micrograms of nitrogen oxides per cubic meter allowed, but on busy roads city environmental agencies measure much higher nitrogen oxide levels. This air pollution is coming especially diesel vehicles.

Newer diesel vehicles emit less CO2 than gasoline-powered vehicles, but still much more nitrogen oxides. So the best thing to do is to give up internal combustion engines in general and switch to electric cars. These are locally emission-free, so they do not emit pollutants when driving. But for electric cars to be truly emission-free, they have to be green power refuel.

2. Diesel threatens driving ban – or already has it

Driving ban for diesel?

Because the limit values are exceeded in many cities, the german environmental aid association sued in 16 german courts. After that administrative court in stuttgart rules has the city had to improve air quality, a diesel driving ban has been in effect in the city center there since 2020. One year later, particulate matter levels in stuttgart are falling and are mostly below 20 micrograms per cubic meter. So the new values are in the acceptable range. Also a driving ban ruling the federal administrative court allows cities to ban diesel cars in principle.

2021 the status of the diesel driving ban in major german cities is as follows. Diesel driving bans exist, albeit mostly only in certain zones, in:

  • Berlin (since november 2019)
  • Hamburg (since june 2018)
  • Stuttgart (since april 2019 also for residents)
  • Darmstadt (since june 2019)

no diesel driving ban yet in essen, frankfurt, gelsenkirchen, bonn and cologne. Mainz had announced one for 2020, but had not yet implemented it. The euro 6d-temp and euro 6d diesel models are so low in emissions that they are not affected by these bans.

Since the driving bans do apply in cities, former diesel drivers could also be other means of transport think. in many places, for example, there are quite inexpensive city tickets for public transport and car-sharing is especially widespread in larger cities (and solves your parking problem). Maybe one of these will fit six worn out means of transport to you and your life.

3. E-cars with top range and falling prices

Tesla Model 3: already a bit more affordable

Electric cars don’t make it a hundred kilometers? No way, between 250 and 600 kilometers electric cars will be able to cover the distance between now and 2020 before they need to be recharged. Because in the last few years, car manufacturers have steadily developed battery technologies, so that you can now easily buy an electric car for going on vacation with an electric car can. Because even longer distances are no problem.

the price of electric cars has also dropped significantly in the meantime: gone are the days when you could only buy a tesla for 100.000 euros. Because even the latest tesla is already available for around 30.000 euros available. And it gets even cheaper: the nissan leaf do you get already for ca. 23.000 euro and the e.GO life for a good 15.000 euro. Compared to a diesel car, the new models are impressive.

Other car brands are following suit: ioniq from hyundai and the polestar from volvo are available for just over 35.000 euros. The hyundai kona lies with almost 35.000 euro still slightly below. The seat cupra is available for under 33.000 euro.

The VW e-up has become one of the bargains among e-cars after a price reduction due to subsidies: for under 22.000 euros it was available in 2021 – at least in theory: the delivery time was at times 16 months, and VW had "temporarily taken it out of the order program" because of too much demand.

However, depending on how often, how far and where you drive your new e-car, a monthly or annual ticket or similar for public transport might still be worthwhile. We have 12 tips for cheap train tickets, with which you might find.

4. electric car filling stations: network grows and grows

Electric cars can now also be recharged on freeways

So we have already clarified: E-cars no longer cost the earth and manage good ranges. Now the only question is: where can I charge the car?? Here, too, things have changed in recent years – but almost only electric car owners have noticed..

over 25.000 charging stations for e-cars will be scattered throughout germany in 2021 – a record figure. And not just in the cities, but also on the autobahns: Germany’s largest operator of autobahn service stations and rest stops, FUEL& speed, every gas station now has electric charging stations.

some supermarket chains such as aldi sud and REWE, as well as some fast-food restaurants offer during opening hours on their parking lots even free electricity for e-cars.

Tip: if you want to be on the safe side, you can also select fuel stops for particularly long routes in advance using a route planner.

5. If you buy a diesel, you’re stuck with it

Car market in Essen: Diesels are slow sellers

If you want to buy a new car, a diesel may seem like a worthwhile investment at first. Maybe also because diesel is especially cheap are: some diesel vehicles are being sold 30 percent below value. Here you should think further: because if a regional driving ban comes, then you may have to get rid of your diesel again.

And this becomes more and more difficult. Because a growing number of dealers are buying already now no more diesel on. They are too concerned about the uncertainty as to whether diesel cars will lose value with the impending driving bans. The market for electric cars, on the other hand, is just getting going: by october 2021, more electric cars than diesel were registered in germany. Major german manufacturers such as audi and BMW want to become primarily electric in the future, or – as in the case of fiat or jaguar – exclusively electric.

Tip: if you want to buy an e-car, you can save money with a grant for electromobility. Pure electric cars are even exempt from vehicle tax, and can get an e-plate, which could for example allow the use of free parking spaces or special lanes.

However, if the car-free city will ever become reality, car-owners will probably not get much for their electric dangers either.
