Diono radian 5 – finally the reboarder, who can do anything, wonders of the world

Diono Radian 5 – finally the reboarder who can do it all!?

* Post updated on: November 15, 2018

A reboarder that can (theoretically) be used from birth to a height of 1.44 m? The forwards and backwards works, with three-point belt, without Isofix and without awkward Gurtgewurstel? Which one can fold and carry to a handy package? And – drum rolls – from 2017 to have the approval for use in the aircraft? There really is. We present: the Diono Radian 5.

At first we could not believe it when the dwarves from Diono Radian 5 told us: finally a reboarder, which is suitable for use on the plane (currently he has no certificate yet) and can be transported so practically that you can easily can also install when traveling in a rental car or motorhome. Class! We certainly would not have brought our voluminous Britax Max-Fix 2 to Spain.

It’s probably because the Diono Radian 5 comes from the US (it’s based on the Radian RXT) – because it’s already “somehow different”. On the one hand, he deliberately avoids Isofix anchoring and can not be certified according to the new i-size standard, which is supposed to become the norm in Europe.

On the contrary: The Radian 5 can be easily with everyone Standard vehicle three-point belt (and theoretically with a two-point belt, as it is on the plane) attach and summarize four weight classes (0, 0+, I and II, ie up to 25 kg body weight or just 1.44 m) together.

Even the initially fierce price of currently about 400 euros is not so high, considering the long period of use: If you use the seat from about nine months (previously advise the Zwergperten always a baby car seat) to about 6 years, you get on just 6 euros per month. Moron!

The data

  • ECE-R 44/04, suitable for weight classes 0, 0+, 1 and 2
  • Universal approval up to 18 kg: usable in (almost) every car, there is no type list
  • available in three colors (Black, Lagoon, Plum)
  • 10-year guarantee (aka “Lifetime Warranty” because the seat should not be used for more than 10 years)
  • as Reboarder or forward with five-point belt to use up to 25 kg
  • 5 shoulder strap positions, expandable sides, 11-way adjustable headrest
  • removable, washable cover
  • first child seat with folding mechanism for practical transport
  • Dimensions folded: 75x43x28cm
  • Weight: 11.5 kg

Unpack and install

That the Radian 5 is “somehow different”, you can see from the outside: He is really exceptionally slim, without the familiar thick plastic-padded sides, and has a very flat and long seat shell, whose sides can also be folded outwards – there fits Even a teen with hips and long legs still in a good mood, and our two-year old climbs here alone.

And: Finally, I see something again, when I’m driving the shoulder look to the right rear!

The Diono Radian 5 is slim and space-saving

We have built the Diono Radian 5 in unbelievable two minutes: Fold up the seat, attach the base to the underside and fix it with the small slider, place the seat on the back seat, thread the three-point belt through the lower part, push the passenger seat back to the backrest of the Diono. Finished.

The basis for the reboarder operation is easily infected

Laura of the Twilight experts has recommended us, the enclosed belt clip and to use the strap – the manufacturer sees the former as an additional safety feature and recommends the latter only from a weight of 15 kg. Although our lodge weighs only 11 kg, but anchoring the strap down, takes less than 30 seconds.

Whether the belt is taut enough shows the voltage indicator. (Your car does not have an anchoring point? Diono has added a connecting strap with a D-ring, which can be tied around a fixed component in the car.)

That the tension belt sits tight enough, the voltage display shows – practical!

The inner life

Can such an all-in-one package be sure? An ADAC test result does not exist for the Diono Radian 5 yet. But we’ll find that one can use this seat longer than others backwards (up to 1.22 meters and 25 kg!), and that he also foresees the five-point belt forward longer than standard seats.

The narrow exterior is deceptive, because the seat is made of a solid (and rather heavy) steel frame, which ensures perfect stability and the necessary side impact protection. Also from the energy-absorbing EPS foam, the special Supergrip belt pads and the V3 Energy Reduction System you can not see anything as a layman.

everyday test

Of the folding mechanism is a feature that excites us, especially as a traveler: a single click, and the Diono Radian 5 is folded into a flat package and can be carried with one hand. Together with the baby-easy installation with the three-point belt this makes the Diono Radian 5 to perfect quick-change seat between different cars.

Pull the red hook once and the lower part is already folded up

The “inner life” of the Radian 5 comes to light. When re-unfolding, care must be taken so that the five-point belt does not jam

Folded flat, fits the Radian 5 in his carrying bag

What bothers us (a little): Although the seat offers all sorts of adjustment options, from the buckle to the headrest, there is no way to make the backrest flatter. (However, she does not stand too steep anyway.) So, we’ll still see how well the World Wonder Baby will sleep on longer distances. Incidentally, Diono offers an “Angle Adjuster” for this purpose – a very thick, solid foam mat that should be slid under the seat.

By the way, there is also a cup holder and a seat for the seat Carrying case, where we can give the Diono Radian 5 quite practical and protected from damage as baggage. Because the approval “for use in aircraft” he unfortunately, but unfortunately not yet. For all who can still wait: It should come from 2017, the manufacturer assures us.

So let it begin!

You can buy the Diono Radian 5 at the Zwergperten (these are Reboarder experts who advise you individually and help with the installation of the seat) or at Amazon *.
