Distance learning costs

Distance learning is just as expensive as attendance study. The amount they are paid depends on the provider and the state in which the university is located, the chosen subject, the desired degree and, ultimately, how quickly the degree program can be completed. Before deciding to study at a distance, it is important to know what the fees are and what the total costs must be.

The big names in the industry, such as the University of Hagen, offer very precise overviews of the fees and also point out the expected total costs. Probably because they can change fee structures over time.

Study and course fees

The most important item in the context of a distance study are the pure course fees. How they are calculated varies from college to college. In some cases, lump sums are collected per month or semester, to which the costs for the study material are then added.

Example FernUni Hagen

At Fernuniversität Hagen, fees are only charged for the use of distance learning courses: 20.00 Euro per semester hour per week (SWS), plus 10.00 Euro care fee per SWS for studying academy. Converted the total costs (at the university) for a bachelor’s degree in education science of about 1,800 euros, in law, it is 2,500 euros. In addition, expenses related to examinations or internships, if any, such as travel expenses and accommodation, may be added.

Private distance schools more expensive than state-run distance universities

Private universities are sometimes considerably more expensive. Depending on the degree program and degree, amounts of more than 10,000 euros are not uncommon. However, studying at a private institution differs completely from that at a state-run distance university: not only in the approach – scientific-theoretical versus scientific-practice-oriented – but also in conveying the content.

Private universities sometimes provide their students with all the materials they need, including specialist literature, which must be purchased separately from other institutions. Here it must be weighed which form is considered to be better, whereby it should arrive above all on the personal desires and conceptions.

examination fees

Exam fees for distance learning are not included in the tables above, but they apply. Again, the amount depends on the distance learning institution, degree program and targeted degree. In the private distance universities, in addition to several hundred euros is expected.

learning materials

Another cost factor that may well matter, depending on what is provided by the university, are the study materials. This includes not only the classic office supplies such as pens, paper, toner or ink cartridges and files, but primarily literature, depending on the subject special software and possibly also a modern PC.

No books work without books. You can significantly burden the budget. Interlibrary loan and copying are a viable way to reduce costs. For copying takes a lot of time, especially in an extra-occupational distance learning or distance learning with child is rather scarce. At a certain “basic equipment” one does not pass in most cases. It is possible to buy them used. However, attention must be paid to the edition. It always counts only the latest version. This also applies to the software. Text and spreadsheets are sufficient in most cases, and are free to have as freeware. But when it comes to special programs, you need or should invest to be able to study properly. This requires a computer that is on the one hand suitable for Internet use, on the other hand meets the requirements, for example, by videoconference with the lecturer exchange or to participate in a virtual lecture.
