Distance learning biotechnology: your path to a master’s degree

Combine your studies and work!

Do you have a first degree in science or engineering and would like to go one step further but not give up your job? Then the part-time course in cooperation with Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is exactly the right way for you! The modern distance learning biotechnology (M.Sc.) offers with teaching videos, intensive support by experts in online tutorials, Springer specialist books and a few attendance phases an attractive alternative to conventional attendance studies.

Simply study part-time with your biotechnology degree & Start your career

Distance learning not only enables you to discover a lot of new knowledge, but also to develop professionally and personally. So take advantage of the opportunity to take your career one step further! And you are not alone – more and more people are consciously opting for further training.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, together with Springer Campus, part of the Springer science publishing house, offers part-time distance learning biotechnology. This is aimed at relevant professional interested parties who want to continue their practical training. After 5.5 semesters, the graduates complete the master’s thesis at their own workplace and receive the state and internationally recognized academic degree Master of Science "Biotechnology" from the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences.

Since distance learning is associated with a lot of commitment and often has to be reconciled with a stressful everyday life, we make our biotechnology studies as modern, flexible and individual as possible for our students. For example, the university lecturers largely created their lectures as instructional films, which are therefore flexibly available and can be viewed multiple times if required. The participants also receive intensive support from experts in the respective field, who answer all questions about the teaching materials in the tutorials. All teaching materials are made available on the online platform and self-learning reviews are offered.

Overview of distance learning biotechnology

During the distance learning course, biotechnological working techniques and the entire process chain of the production of valuable materials from the genetic development of the cell to cell cultivation and processing of the biotechnological products are dealt with. In-depth knowledge of bioreaction technology, sterile technology, fermentation technology and many more are dealt with.

The curriculum is therefore divided into 8 compulsory modules and 4 (out of 6) compulsory elective modules, which the participants work on part-time with a time expenditure of approx. 10-15 hours per week. The compulsory elective modules allow you to choose whether you would like to focus on bioprocess technology or molecular biotechnology.
The course content is conveyed by Springer study books, teaching videos by lecturers and bi-weekly tutorials. The tutorials are carried out online to ensure the greatest possible flexibility for the participants and serve to clarify open questions and to deepen the teaching content. The learning progress is checked using self-learning controls, exams, oral exams, presentations and homework.
In three attendance phases of a total of four weeks, important basics of biotechnology are taught at the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, mainly using laboratory exercises. Due to the concentrated presence phases and the high online share, the study can be optimally combined with a full job.
