The most important questions and answers about donation transparency

  1. Compared to many other children’s aid organizations, SOS Children’s Villages deliberately does not offer traditional sponsorships for children, but sponsorships for children:
    • Child sponsorships exclude other children and lead to tensions in the community.
    • The well-being of children and the protection of their privacy are paramount.
    • The environment and an intact family determine the well-being and opportunities for the future of children. We are convinced that we can only achieve long-term success if the entire environment is strengthened.
    • SOS Children’s Villages also helps where other aid organizations no longer work. SOS Children’s Villages is one of the few children’s aid organizations that supports projects in crisis-hit regions such as South Sudan or the Central African Republic.
    • In contrast to many other non-profit organizations, SOS Children’s Villages mainly employs local employees who are familiar with the cultural situation and are in the context. This makes work easier and promotes the respective economy.
    • SOS Children’s Villages is committed to long-term and sustainable help and empowers people to help themselves. Children are accompanied until they can shape their own future and become an active part of society.

SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland is currently focusing on family programs in the following six countries: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Nepal, Niger, Nicaragua, Central African Republic. Furthermore SOS Children’s Villages operates worldwide.

In the case of a dedicated donation, you decide where the donation is to be used. For example, if you indicate that the entire donation should go to Lesotho, we will make sure that your donation is fully used there.

With a donation without a purpose, however, leave the decision to us. SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland then assesses which countries are in greatest need or which projects need acute financial support. For example, thanks to generous, purposeless donations, we were able to implement over a million emergency relief measures in Syria.

SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland is committed to the transparent, effective and efficient use of your donation. For this purpose, audits are carried out annually by several external partners who check the efficiency of the use of the donations and submit an assessment.

SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland is Zewo-certified, a quality seal of approval for the non-profit sector with strict guidelines, compliance with which is mandatory. These guarantee:

    • the purposeful, economical and effective use of your donation
    • transparent information and meaningful accounting
    • independent and appropriate control structures
    • sincere communication and fair fundraising

Regular reports by independent media underpin the serious work of SOS Children’s Villages. For example, in an article (as of August 2017), the consumer magazine “Beobachter” refers to the seriousness of SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland.

Optimized processes as well as lean and less bureaucratic structures allow the administration costs at SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland to be kept low. On average, 80% of your donation goes directly to needy children in our global projects. We use 20% to raise further donations so that we can reach even more children (12%) and for administrative tasks (8%). This corresponds to the requirements of the Zewo seal of approval.

With this approach, SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland ensures that long-term administrative costs are kept at a low level.

The SOS Children’s Villages Switzerland Foundation takes a systematic approach in its work. As a result, it is able to provide proof of its purposes and target achievement at all times, to communicate openly and transparently, to ensure quality and to optimize processes.

I support SOS Children’s Villages because my own childhood took place in intact family structures. SOS Children’s Villages offers children exactly that. They can have a happy childhood with a lot of family spirit and structure.
