Doors: what prices do you have to expect?

No house without doors – but the costs are often underestimated in the new building. Which prices one has to reckon for doors in general, explains in detail the cost check expert in the interview.

Question: What do doors actually cost in general??

Cost check-Expert: Of course it is difficult to give a general answer to that.

First of all, you have to decide what kind of doors you are talking about:

  • of entrance doors for single-family homes
  • of entrance doors for apartment buildings
  • from side entrances
  • from apartment entrance doors
  • from interior doors
  • of patio doors (so-called “French doors”) or
  • from cellar doors

Depending on the category, very different prices may apply here.

at Front doors for single-family homes You can generally speak of prices between around 400 EUR up to 5,000 EUR out. There is a huge price range here. The offer ranges from very simple plastic front doors from the hardware store to particularly high-quality aluminum or composite front doors (wood-aluminum).

at Entrance doors for apartment buildings It generally gets a bit more expensive – here you will have to pay off in any case 1,000 euros expected. Upwards it can – with appropriate total width of the door, including side panels quite up to 10,000 EUR and go over it.

at Side entrance doors On the other hand, it is often much cheaper. For 200 EUR to 300 EUR You often get attractive side entrance doors made of wood or plastic. For reasons of burglary protection, however, such doors are usually only conditionally recommendable. Good, reasonably burglar-proof doors with a certified safety rating (RC 2) are generally available from around 500 EUR.

Apartment doors are inside the house and therefore do not have to be that solid. That also ensures cheaper prices. Simple doors are often here for you 200 EUR to 300 EUR, but if you value security, you usually have to from 400 EUR – 500 EUR count.

Doors for the interior are much cheaper Every house needs of course inner doors – usually a whole number of them. Here it is often worthwhile to choose a cost-effective but solid door model. The difference in costs then becomes noticeable with each individual door and often adds up considerably at the end. Good quality interior doors are usually available from around 120 EUR to 150 EUR.

Also at patio doors There are big price differences: while simple turn-tilt doors often do from around 400 EUR are available, cost comfortable lift-and-lift doors mostly over 1,000 EUR. For patio doors with correspondingly high-quality equipment and solid burglary protection can then easily total 3,000 EUR to 4,000 EUR accrue.

As cellar doors Essentially ordinary side entry doors are used. The prices are then at the same level. Since basements are often uninsulated, but often come cheaper door models without heat protection in question – you get in general already from around 150 EUR.

Cost example from practice

We have been looking for doors for our single-family house under construction and have found what we are looking for:

door features costs
Main entrance door Branded door, burglary protection RC 2, thermally insulated frame, thermally separated threshold, 5-fold locking 1,760 EUR
Secondary entrance door (rear entrance) Plastic, burglary protection RC 2 707 EUR
Cellar door (to the unheated cellar) 182 EUR
8 interior doors high-quality, but inexpensive version (HPL white), incl. handle set 1,520 EUR
patio door Lifting / sliding door made of plastic aluminum, width 2.50 m, with burglary protection and aluminum shutters 3,681 euros
Total cost for all doors in the house 7,850 euros

Of course, this is only a single cost example, which applies only to a specific door selection and an individual number of doors. The costs can also be significantly different in other cases.

But our cost example shows already well that you must not underestimate the cost of doors. Especially with the main entrance door and patio doors, it quickly becomes very expensive, if one has the corresponding demands on safety and comfort.

Question: From which things do prices for doors depend in general??

Cost check-Expert: Of course, this is always a bit different for every door – but there are general factors that always influence the price of practically all doors:
The cost depends on many different factors

  • the door width and the door size
  • the door material used
  • special burglary protection equipment
  • special heat protection equipment
  • special comfort features
  • high quality glazing
  • high quality designs
  • the quality of the locking system

For interior doors, burglary protection and thermal insulation are usually not important, so interior doors are also less expensive than all other door types. They also use other materials (in most cases CPL or HPL). Design, locking system (in this case, the handle set) and glazing play, for example, but also for interior doors a price-determining role.

Question: Which materials are used for all other doors – and how does that affect the price??

Cost check-Expert: The door material is a very price-critical criterion in almost all doors.

Generally used (except for interior doors):

  • plastic
  • Wood
  • aluminum
  • Composite materials (wood-aluminum, with patio doors occasionally also plastic aluminum)
  • rarely also steel (especially in cellar doors or massive side entrance doors)

Plastic is the most cost-effective option in most cases. Aluminum is already much more expensive. Only for main entrance doors, where plastic doors usually have additional elaborate reinforcements, the prices of plastic and aluminum doors are a little closer to each other.

Wood aluminum is always the most expensive version – these doors are not uncommon for front doors twice to four times as expensive like comparable plastic variants.

Wooden doors are priced mostly between plastic and aluminum.

Steel doors are – as uninsulated – on the other hand, usually much cheaper.
