E-cars as flow heaters: how the subsidy is abused

E-cars: currently subsidized by up to 9,000 euros

The current chip crisis and the resulting fierce competition in the car market are fuelling a scam that has been practiced for some time now: customers buy an e-car, cash in on all the subsidies, and then sell the car to a dealer after a short time. He offers a high price, ships the car to scandinavia and sells it there still profitable. This is hardly how the e-car subsidy was intended.

Rolf gutmann, a pensioner from monchengladbach, likes driving tesla. Where possible, however, gutmann only ever does this for six months before he sells his ‘old’ electric car and buys a new one. The whole thing costs the monchengladbacher nothing, in part he even makes a few euros profit with it.

Gutmann is one of now more than a handful of Germans who are taking advantage of the environmental bonus for the purchase of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in a way that was certainly not intended by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). This is shown by the research of the television program auto mobil of the private channel vox.

The innovation premium for the purchase of electric cars and plug-in hybrids is extended for several years. the federal office for economic affairs and energy (bmwi) is now granting buyers up to 9.000 euros.

And this is how it works: someone buys an electric car – according to vox, tesla vehicles are particularly popular for this scam – pays for the car and then receives the subsidy for the purchase from the manufacturer and BAFA in the amount of up to 9.000 euro. Half a year or a year later, the buyer sells his new electric vehicle again, but still almost at the new price. Thanks to the subsidy, the electric car driver makes no loss. The buying car dealer then exports the electric car to Denmark or norway, for example, where the vehicles can currently be sold for a higher price than in germany. So the car dealer also makes his profit with this legal but questionable trick.

Vox presenter andreas jancke also visits a used car dealer in monchengladbach who openly uses this trick: a poster he has placed in his store promises buyers a guaranteed loss-free buyback of the electric cars purchased six months earlier from the same dealer. Neither tesla driver gutmann, who trades in his six-month-old tesla model 3 for a newer model 3, nor the car dealer have any concerns about this, according to their own statements, although they are acting at taxpayers’ expense. You can see how the two justify themselves in the vox report.
