Eating eggs: this is important for pregnant women and babies

All about the egg

Babies and pregnant women should eat eggs with caution. What it all about theme Egg to be noted.

In terms of protein, eggs are real leaders because they contain the healthy substance with the highest biological value: it can be converted directly into the body’s own protein. Especially during pregnancy, covering the protein requirement is particularly important because the baby needs protein to build up body cells and tissues. The same applies to the minerals iron, iodine and calcium, which are also under the shell, and to the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. They make eggs a healthy addition to your diet for pregnant women.

Nevertheless, the same applies to an egg as to all other animal foods: less is more – and three eggs a week are enough for expectant and nursing mothers.

The following applies during pregnancy: cook the eggs thoroughly

When preparing the eggs and egg dishes, you should take special care that they are really well cooked, because raw eggs could contain salmonella. These are bacteria that sometimes cause serious illnesses and can only be effectively killed at temperatures of over 70 degrees. Raw eggs are therefore taboo for expectant mothers.

Caution: Raw eggs are often found in homemade dishes such as mayonnaise, tiramisu, pudding, hollandaise sauce, ice cream or other creams. At the next invitation to birthday or kindergarten party so be careful about such delicacies and ask how they were prepared. In contrast, industrially manufactured mayonnaise, salad dressings and other products are harmless because they only contain pasteurized eggs and are therefore sufficiently heated.

The following applies to the breakfast egg on Easter Sunday: better hard than soft wax. Both protein and egg yolk should be firm. Guide values: boil eggs for 7 minutes, poach for 5 minutes and fry fried eggs on both sides for 3 minutes, then it also means for pregnant women: "Enjoyment allowed!"

Easter time: Pregnant women are not allowed to blow out eggs

The vast majority of Salmonella are found on the shell – and not inside the egg. Therefore, you should not blow out the Easter eggs for painting, if possible – rather let them blow out. Similar, strict hygiene rules apply to small, eager Easter artists: before the painting rabbits get started allowed to, the eggs must be washed off thoroughly with warm water and detergent. Tip: To blow out, make the hole a little bigger, take a straw and avoid direct mouth contact with the egg. And after brushing, wash your hands thoroughly.
