New electric car from korea

Electric kia EV6: mister 800 volt makes you go fast

Malaga/nuremberg – the electric car no longer focuses on the data that once made the car quartet stand out. The new, important currencies are "charging time" and "range. In both respects, the kia EV6 has the trump cards on its side. Its powerful 800-volt battery system makes recharging a breeze, and the battery capacity is sufficient for up to 528 kilometers of driving. The future top model develops 585 hp and tops out at 260 km/h. This would put the EV6 back on top of the car quartet.

The electric age is not just around the corner. It is already there. And we as reporters feel it too. We feel that we primarily present automotive innovations for which we create headlines with the words "power" and "plug". The same fits to the EV6. It is the first e-car from kia that is not derived from an existing combustion model, but is based on a special electric platform. E-GMP (electric global modular platform) is the link to the ioniq 5 from sister brand hyundai.

If electric, then right

At the same time, the EV6 demonstrates the manufacturer’s determination to leave its former discounter’s corner behind with a vengeance: if it’s going to be electric, then it’s going to be real and premium, with all the trimmings. This includes features that are otherwise only familiar from the realm of expensive top electric cars, such as the porsche taycan or the audi e-tron GT. In order to entice its users to travel long distances and save them time-consuming stops at the electricity station, the EV6 is quick to recharge. Instead of the usual 400 volts, its battery system runs at 800 volts. This means a maximum DC charging power of 240 kW – and that the battery can be brought from 10 to 80 percent charge level in 18 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station. Ideally, says kia, four and a half minutes is all it takes to store electricity for a 100-kilometer trip in a short drink. The EV6 draws three-phase power from the wallbox at up to 10.5 kW.

Power range from 170 to 585 hp

There are several model variants, so the configurator has its work cut out for it. The first thing the customer has to decide is whether he wants the small battery (58 kWh) or the large one (77.4 kWh). The former points the way to the basic model with rear-wheel drive and 125 kW/170 hp, while the latter offers a choice between 168 kW/229 hp and – then combined with all-wheel drive – 239 kW/325 hp. At the end of 2022, another candidate will be added, the GT, which will serve as a sporty spearhead. It has 430 kW/585 hp, is also all-wheel drive, zooms from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and tops out at 260 km/h. It’s a great way to make an impression at the dinner table.

Another top position, that of range king, is claimed by the rear-wheel drive model with 229 hp and 77.4 kWh of energy storage; one battery charge is sufficient for a maximum of 528 kilometers. Even the small solution – the one with 58 kwh and 170 hp – certifies readiness for 394 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. The consumption amounts to 17.2 – 16.5 respectively 16.6 kwh/100 km.

Expressive pattern

The crossover is currently the best performing body in the world. And that’s how kia has dressed the 4.69-meter-long EV6. The design is expressive and futuristic, the high rear end with its continuous light bar is at least worthy of discussion, and in terms of design, the kia design goes in a completely different direction than hyundai’s angular ioniq 5.

On the dashboard, two screens combine to form a curved panoramic display, the air vents underline a narrow control surface that displays either the buttons for the air conditioning or those for the (sometimes somewhat late-responding) navigation and infotainment; switching is done with a gentle tap of the finger. The large-format head-up display uses augmented reality to project three-dimensional turn-by-turn directions onto the road ahead. And leather has been banned from the interior; instead, kia provides the seats with vegan upholstery, and 111 PET bottles find a new purpose in fabrics and carpets. Speaking of the seats, they can be optionally adjusted to a relaxing position, so you can take a nap during the charging process while the sound of the sea, birdsong or the cozy soundtrack of a sidewalk cafe lulls you into relaxation mode – something already familiar from the kia sorento plug-in hybrid, for example.

Power supply for the e-bike

The long wheelbase of 2.90 meters eliminates any tightness from the five-seat interior, the trunk volume is estimated at 490 to 1300 liters, and an additional compartment under the front hood provides a home for the charging cable. Or the adapter that enables the EV6 to perform bidirectional charging and, for example, feeds the e-bike or – via a charging cable with an in-cable control box – helps other power users on their way.

If the e-car driver or rider wants to tow a trailer, they can do so; the 58-kWh model tows up to 750 kilograms, while the 77-kWh versions can handle 1600 kilograms.

Although its size and design stand in the way of a career as a cornering car, the two-ton korean can be steered dynamically and precisely around the bends, and there is nothing to be said about its ride comfort. All kinds of electronic service personnel provide support while driving; depending on the equipment, the team includes, for example, the freeway assistant with lane change support, and remote-controlled parking is also possible. Üsix recuperation levels can be selected using paddle shifters on the steering wheel. the auto mode is particularly clever, adjusting the level of energy recovery based on the traffic situation and navigation data.

Where it’s going in terms of electromobility, knows kia is paying a considerable price for this: the entry-level price of the eV6 is 44 cents.990 euros.

Kia EV6 coming soon:

When it comes: market launch in november

What drives it: electric motors, power 125 kw/170 hp, 168 kw/229 hp and 239 kw/325 hp. Battery capacity 58 and 77.4 kWh

What it costs: from 44.990 euros, after subsidies 35.420 euro

What else is coming: end of 2022 the top model EV6 GT with 430 kw/585 hp
