Environmental psychology deals in the broadest sense with the interaction of environmental factors and the human psyche. Environmental influences can affect human behavior and mental health, but the other way around, mental processes can influence and explain people’s behavior towards the environment.
Psychological mechanisms play a major role in dealing with and assessing environmental issues. In the Federal Environment Agency

What are environmental influences?

Many people associate the term “environment” with nature. Staying in nature creates positive sensations in most people and can have health benefits. The movement, the fresh air and other sensations as in the daily environment of many people contribute to making us feel comfortable in nature. The proximity to green areas and water has a positive effect on our well-being. However, the term “environment” does not only cover the positive influences that we associate with green meadows, forests and babbling brooks. Under “environment” are any factors that affect us humans. These include, for example, the social environment such as friends and family, the living situation, the workplace and the things we consume on a daily basis.

Depending on your personal situation, warmer temperatures in our latitudes may trigger happy emotions, but extreme weather events may cause anxiety, depressive symptoms or post-traumatic stress disorder. Knowledge of the effects of climate change on mental health is therefore very important for adaptation.
