Where to go on Easter vacation with children?

Family vacation at Easter – what can you do?
The planning for family holidays at Easter primarily depends on the date of the Easter holidays. The Easter holidays vary greatly depending on the year. Sometimes the Easter holidays are already at the end of March, but there have also been years when Easter is in the middle of April. Whatever the Easter holiday is and what you would like to do with the children, here we have some ideas for you.

From our many years of experience with Easter holidays with children, we have some tips for you when the Easter holidays are early: Skiing is really fun. But it is no longer good everywhere. Where is there still a lot of snow for skiing at Easter? Of course, we also have recommendations on what to do on an Easter holiday with children in the south.

And if it shouldn’t be mountain or south, we have some tips for nice city trips with children – including hotels, where you can live well with children. It was particularly great recently in Hamburg with children and in Vienna with children.

Easter vacation with children in the snow

This year’s skiing holiday is worthwhile at Easter
On the one hand there is a lot of snow in the Alps this year and on the other hand the Easter weekend is relatively early: these are perfect conditions to spend a nice family holiday with a winter feeling. In the higher mountain regions, the snow will probably remain until mid-April and you can use this for various winter sports. The ski lifts are still up here. But be careful: the low ski areas don’t have enough snow at Easter. Then you are on a bad ski slope. No fun with the kids.
Hence our tips for Easter ski areas so that the Easter holiday is a success.

Tip 1: Ski holiday at Easter in your own hut on the ski slope
Last summer we were in the Hagan Lodge in the Salzkammergut. The rustic huts are also a great place in winter to spend nice winter holidays with children. The hut village in the Salzkammergut is located right on the ski slope. Larger children go up from the hut with the chair lift, smaller children get into the children’s lift from the wooden hut. At lunchtime you can take care of yourself in your huts on the ski slopes or just let the sun shine in the face on the terrace. In the evening there is a hat meal in the restaurant between the huts.

A really big ski area for advanced skiers is in Carinthia in Bad Kleinkirchheim. The ski lifts also run here at Easter. And the Familienhost Post in Bad Kleinkirchheim is right on the ski slope. In the morning you can go straight to the ski slope from the hotel, in the afternoon there is a refreshment at the buffet and then you can go to the tree house sauna.

Even more ski areas for Easter holidays with children
At Easter with children, snow-sure ski areas such as Hochfügen, Obergurgl, Serfaus Fiss Ladis or the above-mentioned ski areas on the Arlberg are also recommended. But these are usually not necessarily the perfect, small and family ski areas for children – except for Serfaus Fiss Ladis, where you really do everything for a family ski holiday. From the super family hotel and children’s hotel to the child-friendly ski school in the large Serfaus Fiss Ladis ski area, everything is offered. A Skioster holiday is particularly pleasant here with older children who can already ski and find their way in larger ski areas. The price should not play a major role in family vacations either, it is rather large than in the smaller, particularly family-friendly areas.

Attention, be sure to check before booking: In the ski areas that are below 1000 meters above sea level, there is usually little or no snow in Easter week and is not recommended for an Easter holiday in the snow. Be sure to rely on ski areas above 1000 meters and check the current snow conditions beforehand.

Tobogganing holidays with children at Easter
Even toboggan runs higher up are still being prepared during the Easter holidays, so that you can very well plan a toboggan vacation. It is particularly beautiful here during the Easter holidays when you can stop at a hut upstairs and enjoy the warm rays of the sun on the sun terrace. From mid-March it seems quite strong again and you should be careful not to get sunburned. Sunshine is much higher in snow than without it. We liked the Weidener Hütte in Tyrol, where you can sit on the sun terrace and enjoy the winter rest. Here you can also spend the night with children in the hut.

On Easter holiday snowshoeing with children
The same applies to snowshoeing with children. In snow-sure areas, family holidays on Easter can be beautiful snowshoe hikes without having to freeze too much. This is particularly pleasant with smaller children if they are not yet able to walk on snowshoes so quickly. However, caution is particularly important in spring when there is an avalanche danger: this rises very quickly on the sunny slopes. So it’s best to go snowshoeing on Easter holidays with certified guides.

Easter holidays in the warmth

What if Easter is late? Family vacation Easter with spring feelings
The later the Easter holidays are, the fewer the options for an Easter holiday with children in the snow. But that doesn’t matter, because in the lower-lying holiday regions of the Alps you can already enjoy spring there, while in the big cities the winter smell and the dreary gray still dominate. In April, the mountain flowers bloom in the Inn Valley and the first gentian flowers can be seen on the sunny slopes and side valleys. This can be observed very well when hiking with children. A variety of attractions for children also provide variety in the Innsbruck area.

Easter holidays with children on Lake Garda – or even in Ticino?
If you are willing to go further afield, you will find good opportunities for family holidays at Lake Garda at the end of April. The flowers bloom and the temperatures are pleasantly warm. You can hike with children through the gorge in Riva, to the castle in Arco or the promising Sentiero Busatte in Torbole.

Similarly strong spring feelings arise in the south of Switzerland. In Ticino, the flowers bloom particularly brightly in April. There are family-friendly hikes in the valleys or promising walks with prams on Lake Maggiore. We enjoyed shopping and strolling on Easter holidays with children in Locarno.

City break at Easter with children

Where to go for a city break with children?
This is a consideration that we have had often in the past few years. There are some beautiful cities where you can have really nice experiences with children – and sometimes at very good prices. Once we were in the southern German metropolis of Munich. There is even more city with Suttgart. The hopp-on hopp-off bus was great for the kids. And then the two car museums at Mercedes and Porsche. If you like, you can also visit the famous zoo in Stuttgart or go to a musical with teenagers. Here is our summary in Stuttgart with children.

You might not have thought of that: Linz in Austria is a little bit apart from the usual ideas for a city trip with children. But here we saw a lot of nice family-friendly things during our three days. The children loved it especially: We were able to go into the steel world of the manufacturer voestalpine and even go there to the furnace (really!). In the Ars Electronica technology museum, children can try out scientific things themselves, also very exciting. And for toddlers the stroll on the Pöstlingberg is an experience. These family hotels are worthwhile on Easter holidays
In our opinion, the well-known luxury family hotels with pool and childcare are particularly worthwhile for family holidays during the Easter holidays. Thanks to the many leisure activities for the children, there are beautiful holidays without boredom whatever the weather. So it doesn’t matter if there is no more snow or it rains for a day and you don’t want to go out because of it. There is a lot to discover with the children in the spacious bathing areas. And parents can use the wellness area, while the children are looked after in supervised childcare.
