Family vacation in Austria

Our tips for your family vacation in Austria

Family vacation in Austria – why? – We think Austria is the ideal holiday destination for families. If you now only think of strenuous mountain tours, then you are not quite right. Of course Austria has a fantastic mountain world. You can also experience this as a family on beautiful alpine hikes or at beautiful mountain playgrounds. But there is so much more to discover in Austria – without much effort.

During our numerous vacations and excursions, we really explored many interesting corners and experienced exciting things. At the moment I can think of our trip to Kaprun Reservoirs: Without hiking we came up to the mountains at over 2000 meters. Check out the great pictures here:

Adventure vacation for all ages
Austria has offers for families with very young children, but also lots of action and experiences for older children and teenagers. We really experienced a lot on our tour of Austria with children. Otherwise we try to introduce you to the small "big" neighbors of Germany here and to show you our most beautiful impressions and experiences. Enjoy reading and browsing!

Hiking in Austria with the family

If you like to be out in nature and want to bring the love of the mountains closer to your children, you are of course well looked after on a holiday in Austria. You will find everything from alpine hikes, numerous gorges and gorges (particularly impressive for children !!) to enormous peaks. We did very easy hikes, even with strollers, to challenging family hikes. We were on the way from Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg to Upper Austria and Carinthia.

-> We have put together our best hikes in Austria for you here.

Family holidays in Austria with children are so beautiful

Playgrounds and nature experiences on the mountain

You can enjoy the beautiful mountains not only when hiking. There are now numerous playgrounds and mountain experiences for families. This is Austria with children: you see marmots, dinosaurs, birds of prey, experience wild slides and find yourself at a wooden castle on the mountain. You will also marvel at its high-altitude, spectacular reservoirs, go into a dam or take the inclined elevator up to the mountain.

We particularly liked these game and adventure worlds:

-> Forest slide park Golm: Whiz down the mountain over seven long tunnel slides, a real fun for the whole family! There is no such thing anywhere else.

-> Marmot Land Zillertal: See marmots up close and romp around in the great playground

-> Wild mountain Mautern in Styria: zoo, bird of prey show, ball run, amusement park, mountain cart and summer toboggan run

-> Triassic Park in Tirol: Here the dinosaurs are going! Research, experience and play in the age of dinosaurs

-> Dinoland Tirol: Even more dinosaurs in the indoor park, the destination in any weather – next door is the house on your head!

-> Spruce castle in Tyrol: a large castle made of spruce wood in the middle of the mountain and around it lots of play options with a ball track, low rope garden, water games, slides …

-> Kugelwald Glungezer: huge wooden ball tracks stand in a stone pine forest. The children can roll huge balls on them – and build ball tracks themselves.

The most beautiful reservoirs on a family holiday in Austria

And you should definitely make these spectacular trips to the reservoir (there is more to experience than you think !!) We have been to the same lake several times now because we did not see everything that interested us the first time:

->Schlegeisspeicher in Tirol: On a guided tour you can go IN the dam and experience the rugged mountains on a hike!

-> Kaprun reservoir in Salzburg: With an inclined elevator you come up to the turquoise shimmering reservoir. Glacier view included!

-> Lünersee Vorarlberg: You can completely walk around this turquoise-green reservoir – even with a stroller. Was voted the most beautiful place in Austria!

Family vacation Austria at the lake

Family vacation Austria on the water

The south of Austria attracts you for its summer vacation with its many small and large lakes. Favored by the Mediterranean influences, it is often quicker to warm up here in spring and the autumn is also extended. We personally love a vacation at one of the Carinthian lakes. So we can be sporty in the morning, hiking in the beautiful mountains or a bike tour and in the afternoon relaxing and swimming by the lake.

Family-friendliness at Millstättersee and Weissensee

Two of our favorite lakes are Lake Millstatt and Lake Weissensee. Behind the Millstätter See the Nockberge rise up, here there are easy but wonderful family hikes. The Weissensee scores with its naturalness. And both lakes each have a highly recommended family hotel – with lake access!

Nice family hotels by the lake

In the family hotel Post am Millstätter See, we were able to enjoy hiking, cycling, fishing with Peter from the hotel and above all the beautiful lake property.
In Kreuzwirt on Lake Weissensee we combined a hike with sailing and felt comfortable in the new sauna when it was raining.

Vacation with the baby in Austria

Family vacation with babies and toddlers

The advantage of spending your vacation in Austria is that the journey usually doesn’t take that long. In addition, many family hotels in Austria have adapted to families with babies and toddlers and offer you great care. So you can leave some things you have to carry with you at home.

Hotels for families with babies and toddlers

At the Babymio Hotel in Kirchdorf in Tirol, the hosts have completely specialized in families with babies and toddlers. So the families feel good all around and are completely among themselves.

The Rosenhof in Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg offers you as a family a special family time together with the funny dwarf Bartli. The beautiful children’s area is used for playing, painting, handicrafts and eating together.

In the Hotel Kreuzwirt on Lake Weissensee in Carinthia, the children spend a lot of time outdoors in nature. The organic certified hotel attaches great importance to nature and regionality.

The family hotel Post am Millstätter See in Carinthia attaches particular importance to individual and loving care for the little ones. In summer, the little ones have their own “beach club” in the hotel garden.

Pram walks in Austria

We ourselves traveled a lot with the stroller in Austria and have therefore put together our walks with the stroller here. There is more than you think, sometimes sporty, sometimes more for walking, but always in a beautiful landscape.
These are our recommended pram walks

Excursions with babies and toddlers

Of course you can go on all kinds of trips with babies and toddlers. Very little ones can usually be taken along almost anywhere in the sling. But when the children get a little bigger, you can go on nice trips that make small children’s hearts beat faster.

In Marble Land in the Zillertal in Tyrol, you can marvel at real marmots up close. Other cute animals want to be fed with grass by you in the petting zoo. And then you can let off steam in the playground.

On the Wilden Berg in Mautern in Styria, you walk comfortably downhill with your pram. First through the beautiful zoo and then down to the adventure and amusement park. Who wants to "ride" his laps here with a unicorn.

Walking downhill with prams is also possible at the Söllereck at the entrance to Kleinwalsertal. Big siblings can use the Söllereck marble run. It’s fun and entertaining.

With the historic Zillertalbahn in Tirol you can ride the old steam train. You drive slowly and comfortably through the Zillertal and enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains.

Walk along the lake in a pram and take the boat back. You can experience this with the boat trip on Lake Weissensee. Even small children find sailing exciting, but it shouldn’t take too long, otherwise they’ll get bored. At the Weissensee in Carinthia there are beautiful sections by boat.

Vacation with teenagers in Austria

Family vacation in Austria with older children

Even with older children, you can experience a great and varied holiday in Austria. There is fun and action to be experienced in the mountains if you know where and what. Our big one likes to go back to the mountains. However, he is already looking for a sporting challenge. So we often start a hike together and while mom and little one comfortably go up to the mountain pasture and then enjoy the view there, papa and the big one climb the summit and then meet again.

Cool action for cool kids

It is of course really action-packed when it comes to things like rafting or canyoning. And you never get too old for a fast ride on a modern summer toboggan run.

… Or go canyoning with the hut’s own guides on family holidays in Austria!

Canyoning, rafting, climbing …

in the Almlust Hüttendorf in Flachau in Salzburg In addition to a cozy overnight stay in your own hut in the chalet village, you have the opportunity to book really cool adventures in the mountain sports school. We ourselves were canyoning and climbing in the high ropes course. Rafting or climbing in the mountains are also offered there. Boredom excluded! The right thing for teenagers who find everything sooo boring!

You can find cool runs with the modern "Alpine roller coasters" e.g..
– in the Zillertal in Tyrol on the Arena Coaster
– in the Montafon in Vorarlberg on the Alpine Coaster Golm

Citytrip Austria with children

City trip Austria with children

Although Austria is of course small compared to Germany, there are still very interesting cities with many opportunities to spend a few days as a family. We have tried many city tours in Austria and were pleasantly surprised by the treasures we discovered.

The big number 1 is of course Vienna. We have been to the capital of Austria several times and still haven’t seen everything. Prater, Museum of Illusions, Schönbrunn Palace, Labyrinth, 5-D Time Travel Museum…

The city of Linz has made a name for itself primarily through steel processing. A visit to Voest Alpine even takes you to the blast furnace. Or you can become a sprayer of graffiti art on a harbor tour. The Ars Electronica is an absolute “must”: state-of-the-art technology for experiencing, getting to know, and trying out in a playful way.

-> that’s how we experienced Linz

Klagenfurt

Stroll through the beautiful old town, a visit to the Minimundus, where you will meet the whole world in small format or of course to the shore of Lake Wörthersee. Anyone traveling in Carinthia should not miss a trip to Klagenfurt.

Graz scores above all with its beautiful old town, with its winding old streets. The famous “clock tower” is particularly interesting for children. Great playgrounds and a children’s museum make the city worth seeing for families!

-> that was our trip to Graz

innsbruck

Innsbruck naturally scores with its location between the high mountains. If you want to admire more than the "Golden Roof", go with the children to the Hofburg for a family tour and visit the ski jump on Bergisel. And for animal lovers there’s the Alpine Zoo with its residents. In spring we were up on the Nordkette in the snow at Figln. What is that?

-> read here in the Austria blog about Innsbruck with children

Salzburg

In any case, you will visit the "Hohensalzburg Fortress" in Salzburg and stroll through the old, narrow streets past Mozart’s birthplace. As a family, you should definitely plan a visit to the "House of Nature". Science, nature and technology are made tangible and tangible here. Hellbrunn Palace has great water features and a large zoo.

Sightseeing vacation in Austria with children

Excursion destinations for the whole family in Austria

The variety of excursion destinations in Austria does not always make it easier to choose what to do on vacation. Here you can see all of our excursion destinations by federal state. Now we briefly present some of our most beautiful trips with family.

Cool culture for kids too

At Esterhazy Castle in Burgenland, you can admire the great rooms of the castle as a family. There are always guided tours especially for children.

In the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Tyrol, you first hike through the “Chambers of Wonder”, in which children make their own discoveries. A few surprises await you in the play tower and in the outdoor area.

Special indoor excursion destinations for families

You experience the world "upside down" in the "Haus am Kopf" in Tyrol. The name says it all and the visit is really recommended! Unique in the entire Alpine region.

In the Porsche Traumwerk near Salzburg, you marvel at one of the most beautiful and modern model railroad layouts. Great lighting effects and funny details make them so special. On the upper floor there is an interactive toy collection and a large carrera track for playing!

In the tunnel worlds in Tyrol, you immerse yourself in the project of the largest tunnel in the Alps. You will learn everything about the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel in a playful way, but also about geology, traffic and much more. Great with hands-on stations and admission is even free!

In the atoll on the Achensee in Tyrol, you can splash around, swim and relax in the sauna not only in bad weather. The great lido with the playground (here is a real ship to play with!) Inspires families.

Particularly unusual excursion destinations in Austria

In the Rollercoaster Restaurant on the Vienna Prater, your food is served in a completely different way. Ordered by tablet, food and drinks are brought to your table via a roller coaster. Cool lighting effects and sounds bring additional fun and entertainment!

You are up to 40 meters high in the treetop trail in Kopfing. Don’t worry: You can relax on safe and wide wooden walkways between the forest tops.

On the 3-lake tour in the Salzkammergut, you are on the Grundlsee with the big ship, with the Platte on the Toplitzsee and then go to the small hidden Kammersee in a few minutes. Great idea to be in a beautiful landscape as a family!

The Wolfsklamm in Tyrol is really one of the most beautiful gorges we know. There are many steps, stairs and tunnels to pass rushing waterfalls and marvel at the power of the water in the washed out rocks. Romantic and fascinating!

Nice family hotels in Austria

Family Hotels Austria – which are worthwhile?
Virtually all federal states in Austria have formed groups for family vacations, in which special family-friendly accommodations and family hotels are managed. We have visited many family hotels in Austria. Compared to other countries, there are the best family hotels in Austria. We found family hotels with pool, slide, beautiful family rooms, very good food, lots of fun.

Spend the night in the tree house hotel Austria

Our night in the tree house hotel was particularly impressive. You sleep high in the tree with all the luxury of a family room. So that you can better imagine this, we have our pictures and experiences here:

Spend the night in an alpine village with children?

Some huts are also very nice, where you can sleep in an alpine village. There are specially created "luxury villages". They offer a lot, but also cost accordingly. We visited some. -> We have already visited these hut villages

On the other hand, there are also simple huts (e.g. in the Karwendel) to rent, which often have no electricity or water – a challenge for families with children. Spending the night on the pasture sounds idyllic, but from experience on site it is not always easy and starts when you have no water when brushing your teeth and see nothing (!) At night because there is no street lighting.

Arrival on family vacation in Austria

Travel to Austria with children
Austria is the top destination with children – the federal states in Austria can be reached quickly and easily by car. You can be in the middle of Tyrol in just over an hour from southern Germany. Salzburg is similarly close. The journey to Carinthia or Styria takes around 3 hours. The short travel times make Austria particularly interesting for a family vacation with small children or babies.
From the north of Germany there are flights to Salzburg, Innsbruck or Klagenfurt.

If you would like to take a family vacation in Austria on panoramic roads, I recommend a family vacation in Carinthia in these special ways:

Family vacation Austria – best time to go

Travel time family vacation Austria
A holiday in Austria with children is actually possible all year round. The activities vary depending on the season, depending on the altitude of the travel destination. While the snow still lies on the high alpine pastures in May, the most beautiful alpine hikes are already possible on the southern slopes of the valleys. The main travel season for summer holidays in Austria is June to August. The federal state of Carinthia is particularly suitable for a spring or autumn holiday. Here it is often already or even significantly warmer due to the Mediterranean influence.

Our vacation tips for Austria with children

Vacation service for family vacation
We are also happy to help you find the right family hotel in Austria and a cheap offer for family holidays in Austria. We have seen so much, we know where to find what is cheap AND get very good quality. Where is the hotel really nice with small children, which hotel is better with teenagers? Living on the mountain or near a lake? With wellness or thermal baths?

We help with these questions. Nothing is worse on vacation than spending money on a mediocre family hotel where you don’t feel comfortable.
