Family vacation stralsund with children – city – baltic sea beach

Stralsund with children

Stralsund is worthwhile with children?
That was my first thought when I went to Stralsund with children to find out more. We were on our family vacation on the Baltic Sea in Rügen and visited Stralsund. The Hanseatic city of Stralsund is right at the gates of Rügen. After our short stay, I can recommend Stralsund with children!

If you are vacationing in the area, a visit to the wonderful old town is definitely worth it. The beautiful Hanseatic house facades, the harbor, the tower of the Marienkirche, the Ozeaneum or the sea museum are the highlights of the city. We stayed here for a few hours on our way to Rügen and really enjoyed our stay.

Park Stralsund

Where to park in Stralsund?

As is usually the case in cities, you have the choice here: stay a little outside (and park for free) or park near the old town for a fee. There are plenty of parking spaces around the city center. We parked near the ocean. From here it was a few minutes to the old town of Stralsund and we could also visit the harbor with the Gorch Fock and the historic houses. -> Park all information about Stralsund here

The port of Stralsund on the Baltic Sea

The port of Stralsund extends behind the Ozeaneum, a large aquarium. The "Gorch Fock" sailing training ship is particularly worth seeing. Even if, like us, you don’t want to go up, the ship is very worth seeing from the outside. From here you also have a beautiful view of the imposing bridge that goes over to Rügen. Stralsund city tour

We start our city tour at the "Old Market" in Stralsund (don’t worry, you will find the well-signposted route without a city map). Here we borrow audio guides from the tourist information office. We also get a city map with the main sights of Stralsund. We won’t make all the stops today, but we want to see a large part of the old town.

Stopover at the city relief – that is what our two in Stralsund love with children

From Stralsund market square through the old town on the Baltic Sea

Our tour starts at the "Old Market Square" at the town hall. We are fascinated by this beautiful Hanseatic building. The construction is simply completely different than we know it. We go through the Rathauspassage before we stop in front of the equally impressive Nikolaikirche. We don’t go in today, we don’t have time for that today. Entry to the church would be chargeable.

We follow the circular tour and walk through narrow streets. Many houses are beautifully preserved and renovated. I particularly like the gables. We walk slowly past former monastery complexes and old city walls in the direction of "New Market" and "Marienkirche". We pass the "Maritime Museum". Unfortunately there is no time for that today either.

Next to the museum we discover an old ship. Via a staircase you can get to a bridge and look at the deck of the ship. A must for our junior today. He discovered his love for ships here in northern Germany. We will soon be at the "Neuer Markt". If there are no market days here, there is a large parking lot (unfortunately not very nice, but it also needs it). Behind it is the Marienkirche, our next destination.

Marienkirche Stralsund with children

The most beautiful viewpoint in the city!

The Marienkirche has a publicly accessible tower that we want to climb today. We take a brief look at the interior of the church, then we follow the signs up: 366 steps first go up a spiral staircase, later up steep wooden stairs and ladders to the tower. Quite exhausting. Even summiteers get a little bit of a breath. But it’s worth it!

The view from the tower over the city is sensational. The beautiful houses with their gables and facades almost look like a miniature world. From up here you can also see entire streets that you don’t really see below.

The tower costs admission and we only recommend it to active families with slightly larger children. The steps are steep – and stretch. There is no elevator, so nothing with a stroller. But otherwise absolutely recommendable!!

Stralsund pedestrian zone

For us, our stay in Stralsund is coming to an end again. We walk through the long pedestrian zone back to the "Old Market" to deliver our audio guides. The audio guides weren’t that exciting for the children. They are particularly interesting for people who want to learn more about the history of the city and the individual buildings. The good thing is, of course, that as an adult you can learn something about the city while strolling through the city with the children. Thanks to Stralsund Tourismus for the on-site support! There would be a lot more to discover in the city if you had more time. Plan this for your next family holiday in the Baltic Sea, especially if you are in Rügen with children – then you will come by as soon as you arrive.

Stralsund is also worth a day trip from Usedom with children!

Stralsund with children – remember these tips

Stralsund with children: Deviner Strand

Not every Hanseatic city has a beach. The Hanseatic city of Stralsund has one! Stralsund Strand is in the south of the city. There you will find the Devin recreation area. At the edge of the forest is the Stralsund beach – ideal with children because of the sandy beach. The Devin beach is 450 meters long and 25 meters wide. Not only the locals are proud of their Stralsund Stralsund beach, guests also come here. You can see wonderfully on the Strelasund (the sea arm of the Baltic Sea), on the left the shipyard and on the right the island of Rügen including the Rügen Bridge. It connects the mainland around Stralsund with the island of Rügen. The Stralsund beach is free.

You can either get here by public bus (bus lines 3 and 6 with the Devin stop) or by car from Stralsund via Deviner Weg to Deviner Park, where there are parking spaces at the Kurhaus Devin. From here it is around 350 meters on foot to the Deviner beach. -> for orientation here the google map.
