Here you can not only immerse yourself in the wonderful world of the dwarves, but also experience a bit of history at the Wartburg. And in winter one thing is on the program: skiing!

Sweet temptations

A sweet temptation awaits you in the Viba Nougat world. At the Thuringian confectionery specialist, you can look forward to an entertaining and enjoyable tour through the fascinating world of nougat. You will accompany the hazelnut on its way from cultivation to the production of the delicious nougat.

Around 5,000 toys from the beginning to the present await you in the German Toy Museum in Sonneberg. Immerse yourself in the world of fantasy and stroll through the oldest toy collection in Germany! Of course, there are also two play areas in which the toys can then be tried out!

Immerse yourself in the realm of imagination

It is tiny and yet fabulous in the Dwarf Park, which is not far from the birthplace of the first garden gnome in the world. Around 2,500 garden gnomes in all colors and variations are distributed in the 5,000 m² garden. When you take the Bimmelbahn, you can see the dwarf paradise up close look at.

It is also magical in the Saalfeld fairy grotto, which was once known as the most colorful show grotto in the world. The famous naturalist Ernst Haeckel was certain in 1914 when he said: "If these caves were not in Germany, but rather in America, you would have made a pilgrimage there long ago!" You and your children should make sure that he’s right!

Experience history up close

An absolute highlight in the region is undoubtedly the Wartburg in Eisenach. Where Martin Luther once translated the Bible into German, there is now a cultural and historical center. Your children will be particularly impressed by the medieval flair of the magnificent castle complex, as memories of knights and damsels are awakened immediately. Works by the painter Lucas Cranach the Elder are exhibited in the attached museum.

A highlight for animal lovers

In the Thuringian Forest you will find a variety of wildlife and animal parks where you can admire the animals up close and in a natural environment. The Suhl zoo is particularly worth a visit because you and your children can admire more than 500 species of animals in the enclosures and on the entire site. The special thing about it is that it specializes in endangered wild animals and pets.

On the way in the winter wonderland

When the first flakes fall from the sky, the Thuringian Forest turns into a winter wonderland. No matter whether you are a cross-country skier, alpine skier or snowboarder – come here everyone at his expense! Especially in Oberhof, Wurzbach or Masserberg-Heubach, family-friendly hotels await you right on the slopes – after breakfast, the white landscape can be made unsafe!

Oberhof in particular is a skier’s paradise for all snow-loving families. Skiers can look forward to two downhill slopes, cross-country skiers can expect a dense network of groomed ski hiking trails and cross-country trails. Snowboarders and sledders also get their money’s worth. If you don’t want to carry all the necessary equipment with you on vacation, you can of course borrow everything on site. And if you don’t want to do without the white splendor even in summer, you can make the ski hall in Oberhof unsafe.
