What is car insurance?

There is no such thing as car insurance per se. the term is used colloquially to describe the various car insurance policies that serve to protect against excessive costs in the event of an accident or breakdown. The two most important insurances are the motor vehicle liability insurance and the comprehensive insurance.

What is motor liability insurance??

Motor liability insurance protects you against claims for damages from third parties. If you have an accident and injure a person and/or damage another vehicle, you do not have to pay for the damage yourself. Instead, your insurance will cover you. In many cases, this protection is absolutely necessary, because if a person is injured, high claims for damages can be made against the person who caused the accident – for example, if an accident victim suffers permanent damage. The motor vehicle liability insurance also insures you against such costs.

What is comprehensive insurance??

Motor vehicle liability insurance only pays for damage that you cause to other people with your vehicle. If, on the other hand, your car is damaged in an accident for which you are responsible, you will normally have to pay for the repairs yourself – unless you have comprehensive insurance as protection. This car insurance pays if your car is damaged, destroyed or stolen. There are two types of comprehensive insurance: partially comprehensive and fully comprehensive.

What is the difference between fully comprehensive and partially comprehensive??

Partially comprehensive insurance pays out if your car is damaged due to one of the following causes:

  • Fire and explosion
  • Theft and robbery
  • Glass breakage
  • Scorching damage to the wiring after a short circuit
  • Damage caused by martens and wild animals
  • Storm damage; for example, if a tree falls on your car or hail causes damage

Fully comprehensive insurance includes all the benefits of partial comprehensive insurance. In addition, it also covers you against damage caused by vandalism and against damage caused by yourself or another person. So if you cause an accident and have to take your car to the garage, the fully comprehensive insurance pays for it, but the other car insurances don’t.

Who needs car insurance?

If you have a car and want to take it for a spin, you need insurance. Every car owner who wants to use his car needs car insurance. Motor third party liability insurance is the compulsory insurance among car insurances. Without this policy you can not register your car. You have to prove that you are insured with an insurance confirmation, the so-called EVB number.

Comprehensive insurance, on the other hand, is a voluntary form of protection. Whether you should take out this insurance depends, for example, on how old your car is. For a new or relatively young car, it is usually worthwhile to have fully comprehensive insurance. After all, you would otherwise have to replace it out of your own pocket in the event of total loss or theft. However, if you have an old car that is only worth a small amount, fully comprehensive insurance is often more expensive. This does not always have to be the case. It is worthwhile to make a comparison between the costs of the partially comprehensive and fully comprehensive insurance.

What is the price of car insurance??

Various criteria are used to calculate premiums for car insurance:

the insurers assign each vehicle model to a type class. This refers to how many claims there have been for this model in a given period of time. A higher type class automatically means a higher premium.
  • Regional class: your place of residence also influences the cost of car insurance. In certain regions, for example, accidents can occur more frequently or more vehicles are stolen. Accordingly, you will be assigned to a regional class. : it is about you as a driver. If you drive accident-free for a longer time, the insurance rewards you with a lower premium. The following applies: a high no-claims class, also known as SF class, usually means a higher discount. The classes range from 0 (novice driver) to 35 (35 years without a claim). Every claim-free year means a higher no-claims class. If you have an accident or damage, it can also happen that you are downgraded one or more classes. No-claims classes only exist in motor vehicle liability and fully comprehensive insurance.

Other factors include the number and age of drivers, how much you drive per year, and the age of the vehicle. The parking space of your car can also influence the premium amount. A garage is usually rated positively by insurers. Parking on the street, on the other hand, represents a higher risk of damage and can therefore lead to higher premiums for car insurance.

With a deductible, you can additionally reduce your premium in the comprehensive insurance. In this case, you will always have to pay a certain portion of the damage yourself. You should compare different car insurance offers and pay attention to how high the deductible is.

It is not only the type class, regional class and your driving behavior that influence the premiums. There are also significant differences between the providers. You can find numerous comparison portals for car insurance on the internet. To take advantage of this, you enter your place of residence online, as well as the vehicle model and information on vehicle use. You will also need to provide some information about yourself – for example, when and where you obtained your driver’s license and what your profession is. Information on previous insurance policies and whether you have already reported damage in the past is also necessary.
