Five inexpensive activities that toddlers will enjoy

It doesn’t take much to inspire a child. In fact, it’s often the “little things", that play the greatest role in childhood memories: the mother stops at the side of the road so that the child can climb a tree, you can hop on a hotel bed, you splash wildly through puddles in the rain. And the best thing about it? Many of these amusements are inexpensive or even free.

With this in mind, here are a number of simple, inexpensive activities that will be remembered and that are sure to be a highlight in your child’s day – and yours!

Use a vehicle

Small children like to be driven, especially if it is not always the same car seat. Check with your airport or hospital – many have a free shuttle bus that you can take as often as your child’s heart desires. If you don’t normally use the bus, you should get to know everything about your local transportation system and take a ride through your city and look at things from an exciting new perspective.

Let your little child play with a nice lump of pizza dough. It shouldn’t be too sticky and not too runny – that’s the perfect texture for little fingers. Get the dough from a grocery store near you, a pizza restaurant, or mix your own dough. A rolling pin is the icing on the cake for this activity (or should we say the cream with the cake). If you feel like it, you can bake a pizza from the rest of the dough while your child is playing with his dough. Otherwise, you can just freeze the rest or put them in the fridge to play at a later time.

Artful packaging
If you’ve ever watched a young child unwrapping a gift, you know that they are likely to ignore the content and focus entirely on the box, wrapping paper, and ribbon. Take advantage of this. Wrap something small, such as a pretty postcard or a gift that you already own. Be sure to use lots of tape and paper (the colorful children’s or comic pages in your daily newspaper are very suitable). Give it to him with an exuberant gesture.

It is an airplane!
Check with your airport to see if there is a lookout tower – or a room with huge windows where your child can watch the planes take off and land. Get some food and enjoy the show.

baker
If your little child is not yet old enough to handle an electric mixer or a flour sieve, it may be the job of sprinkling the cookies. So bake a serving of cookies (you can even buy pre-made dough) and let it go with a pack of crumbs. In the end, you will surely have some cookies that have no crumbs at all and others that have a lot. Don’t forget to take pictures of everything!
