Futuristic car design: what the past teaches us

Many car manufacturers are currently outdoing each other with ever more unusual concept vehicles, showing the direction in which the future of the automobile can go. However, a simple look back shows that this is not a new invention.

Many years ago there were already concepts for automobiles that are hardly inferior to modern inventions. Let’s take a look at the most unusual and futuristic car designs presented by various manufacturers and designers.

1. The galileo concept car based on ford

In 1957, the vehicle was presented to the public for the first time. the vehicle, which was strongly reminiscent of the ideas of space travel of the time, was developed by joseph gallileo on the basis of a 1949 fords. All the work on the body was not only carried out by hand, but was also made of fiberglass and thus particularly lightweight. A car that unfortunately did not make it to series production but remained a one-off.

2. the ford thunderflite: flat luxury in futuristic design

Even though the car was based on the 1961 ford thunderbird, this concept car was not developed until the 1990s. The flat body shape and the glass domes above the driver and passenger make the car look like something out of the comic strip "the jetsons appear borrowed. 4. The 1958 sir vival: two-part superstructure in innovative design

The vehicle, which was presented in 1958, is almost unique in its design. The front and rear of the car are separate, as the developer walter C. Jerome wanted to build the safest vehicle in the world. For this reason, both halves of the vehicle are equipped with their own engine to increase maneuverability and flexibility.

5. The "car of tomorrow by john conrad berkey

in the 1970s, john conrad berkey developed his car of tomorrow. A pure concept drawing, which amazed with many details. Among other things by the anti-gravity seats, which would actually make the car itself obsolete.

6. The ferrari modulo 512- flat, streamlined and futuristic

The ferrari modulo 512 is a concept car developed in the 1970s and intended to be a variant of the current ferrari super sports car. The vehicle reached a top speed of 220 miles per hour and was powered by a 5-liter V-12 engine. Unfortunately it remained also here with only one concept vehicle.

The schlorwagen was developed in 1937 and its appearance was clearly inspired by the airplane wings of the time. The streamlined design and absolutely smooth surfaces made the vehicle a real eye-catcher.

8. The submarine of norman bel geddes

A vehicle that looks like a mixture of a futuristic submarine, a spaceship and a car was developed by norman bel geddes. Unfortunately, this vehicle never saw the light of day either, but remained only as a concept drawing.

The ford vehicle, developed in 1966, looks more like a transformer than a normal vehicle at the time. nevertheless you can see on this vehicle that the designers of that time had some interesting approaches, because some of the details are standard on today’s vehicles.

10. The studebaker manta ray

The concept car developed in 1951 with its soft shapes and many extravagant details unfortunately never made it into production and has been preserved only as a model.

11. The chevy express: turbine power as propulsion

Many designers broke new ground not only in design, but also in powertrains. Developed in 1987, the chevy express was to be powered by a gas turbine and was designed to be streamlined accordingly. Cameras replaced the usual mirrors and the entire interior was controlled by control elements.

14. The 1958 ford X2000 concept car

The 1958 ford X2000 concept is unfortunately no longer available in today’s market. Visible, however, is a study developed in the 90s, which should create the design again. However, the basis of this variant is the 1962 mercury monterey, so perfect congruence has not been achieved. nevertheless, a concept that reflects the courage and vision of the developers at the time.

A glimpse of the future

If you take a closer look at the different designs, you will find elements that have been preserved in today’s vehicles as well. Take the futuristic tesla cybertruck as a best example. So we can almost guarantee that parts of today’s and tomorrow’s concept cars will also find their way into vehicle development and enrich everyday life as part of the normal used vehicles. Exterior cameras and navigation systems have long been futuristic ideas in concept cars, but are now commonplace in mid- and high-end vehicles. It will therefore continue to be exciting in the future to take a look at the current concept vehicles and to assess which components and elements we are likely to encounter more frequently in the future.
