Arrival and arrival in Tbilisi

The Georgia family trip starts today. We would be happy to book a suitable flight and a transfer to the first hotel in Tbilisi. Due to the different flight times we have the afternoon at leisure. In the evening we meet with our guide, who will accompany us for the next 8 days, and then get to know each other better during a dinner in a traditional restaurant.

Back to the Future

After breakfast we visit the decorative gardens Gardenia Shevardnadze in Tbilisi. We visit the amazing and colorful collection of flowers and plants of all kinds and learn a lot about the natural beauty of the gardens.

Then we drive to the ethnographic museum. It is located in the open air on a hill south of the city center, west of Lake Turtle. We visit all types of traditional Georgian houses: around 70 stone and wood buildings have been transferred here from all parts of Georgia. You can also see watermills, watchtowers, wineries, a basilica, a family crypt and 8000 everyday objects. We learn how people used to cook in the past and how food was preserved.

Then we take the funicular cable car up to Mtatsminda Park. The popular amusement park can look back on more than a hundred years of history. At the time of the USSR, the park was even the third most visited amusement park in the Soviet Union. The park was significantly expanded in 2009 and now welcomes numerous local guests and tourists with its family-friendly attractions (to be paid separately on site). Who would like to take a ride on the roller coaster, the white water rink or the creepy ghost train? Even if some attractions are getting a bit old, the park is still worth a visit. Because the location is definitely impressive: at a height of around 770 meters you have a unique view of Tbilisi. The park’s Ferris wheel is one of the city’s landmarks and is visible even from a distance. We are brought back to the hotel around late afternoon. The evening is at our free disposal.

Discover Tbilisi

After breakfast we start a discovery tour of the Georgian capital – Tbilisi, which is today the most important industrial, social and cultural center in Georgia. As part of the city tour, we not only see the old town with beautiful Christian Orthodox churches, mosques & Synagogues, but also new and modern buildings. Here narrow, cobbled streets, colorful houses and balconies decorated with wood carvings await us.

Of course, we also cross the roofed glass bridge of peace, which connects the old town of Tbilisi with the newly designed Rike Park not far from the Presidential Palace. You can also take the cable car up: from the famous Narikala fortress, we have a great view of the city. Then we return and continue our stroll on the Schardeni and Leselidse streets. Art galleries as well as shops for handicrafts and traditional jewelry have settled in the small houses.

We have the afternoon at leisure. Tbilisi is known for its hot sulfur baths, which we can optionally test (approx. € 15 per person). The sulfur baths are said to be healing and have a water temperature of 42-44 degrees. Pushkin and Alexandre Dumas already raved about this experience!

Culture & Georgian cuisine

After breakfast we take a trip to Mtskheta (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the old capital of the Georgian kingdom. Mtskheta was of great importance for the religious development in Georgia: in the 4th century the kings of the empires Iberia and Karti adopted the Christian faith. Christianity thus became the state religion in Georgia. We visit the Jvari Monastery, built in the 6th century, with a beautiful view of the city of Mtskheta and the confluence of Mtkvari and Aragvi. Then it goes to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where the robe of Jesus Christ is said to be buried. For centuries, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral was the coronation and burial church of the Georgian kings and is also the second largest church in Georgia.

Then we drive to the Chateau Mukhrani. The princely castle is now part of one of the well-known wine companies in Georgia. On the huge yard there is a wine factory and a winery, which we will visit. Here we also enjoy lunch together with various Georgian specialties. We have the opportunity to prepare the Chinkali specialty ourselves. The small Dumplings can be filled with minced meat, cheese or sour cream and are eaten by hand. There is a certain technique for this, which our guide demonstrates to us.

As a dessert there is the particularly popular delicacy Tschurtschchela. These are hazelnuts or walnuts, which are tied on a thread so that they are held in thickened grape juice and then dried in the sun. After two months of ripening, they taste really delicious!

Then we drive to the beautiful mountain region to Kazbegi on the Georgian military road that connects Russia and Georgia. The trip is a little adventure but offers great views and beautiful landscape impressions. The small town of Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is located at the foot of Kazbek, the third highest mountain in Georgia and the eighth highest mountain in the Greater Caucasus. We stay in the great design hotel rooms.

Hike in the mountains

After the very good breakfast in the Design Hotel Rooms, you will be well-rested in nature! We hike about 2 hours to the famous Gergeti Church (Sameba), located at 2170 m above sea level. The location of the church is unique and it is worthwhile, even if there is a difference in altitude of almost 500 m. On the way we have a picnic in the middle of the mountain landscape, an incredibly green pasture valley, with a view of the high mountains that surround us from all sides. The church was built in the XIV century and is one of the most important sights in Georgia. The view is really terrific!

We then drive back into the valley in jeeps and then visit the Mokheuri Teka design studio in Kazbegi. The local fashion designer Tamar Sujashvili creates handmade items from felt. Working with felt has a long tradition here in the mountains of Georgia. We let us explain exactly how felt is made from wool and then design small flowers or other different things out of felt. By the way, the studio manager makes very delicious, homemade jams and of course we can also taste the different types accompanied by delicious teas.

The evening in our extravagant hotel offers time to relax. On the terrace we can relax with a view of the beautiful mountain Kazbek, make ourselves comfortable in the hammocks in the garden, splash around in the pool or sweat in the sauna.

Adventure rafting

At breakfast we enjoy the view of the magnificent Kazbeg again. Then we drive towards Borjomi. On the way, visit the Ananuri fortress from the 17th century, which is located above the Jinvali reservoir. From this reservoir Tbilisi and its surroundings get both drinking water and electricity. The fortified church has an eventful history: the fortress was both a castle and a Georgian Orthodox monastery. On the so-called Georgian Military Road, which is more than 200 kilometers long, traders and soldiers moved from Vladikavkaz to Tbilisi and the other way past the impressive church thousands of years ago.

On the way we also planned a rafting tour on the Aragvi River. During the lively adventure, we are accompanied by a professional guide and familiarized with the safety precautions in advance. Participation is already possible for children from the age of 6. The tour lasts about 1.5 hours and is of medium difficulty, whereby the level of difficulty also depends on the season and water level. And of course we can also get a little wet!

Then we drive to Gori, the birthplace of Stalin, and visit his birthplace from the outside. Stalin lived in the house until 1883 and is now a state museum. Then we drive to our hotel in Borjomi and can relax by the pool.

Transfers: approx. 4.5-5 hours.

Sataplia nature reserve

Borjomi was already a well-known health resort in the Soviet Union and still is today. After breakfast we visit the central park of Borjomi, where we can try Georgia’s most famous mineral water “Borjomi”. Who likes the healing water? It contains more than 60 minerals, comes from a depth of approx. 8-10 km and is exported to 40 countries worldwide. Because of its high fluoride content, the water is also used to prevent tooth decay.

Then it goes to Kutaisi. The third largest city in Georgia is close to the Sataplia Nature Park. Here we take a leisurely hike and discover the footprints of the dinosaurs that were found here in 1935. In 2011, a house was built around it to protect against wind and weather and the footprints are illuminated effectively because they are difficult to see due to the decades of weathering. With a little imagination, we can certainly recognize one or the other trace. We continue on a forest path through Jurassic Park, where some dinosaur models are set up. Then we visit the stalactite cave, which is quite cool at 12-13 degrees: the cave is 300 m long and has numerous beautiful stalagmites, stalactites and other stalactite formations. The footpath through the cave was only renewed a few years ago and is easy to walk.

In the evening we take a walk through the old town in Kutaisi. Our hotel here has a good location, but is strongly reminiscent of the Soviet era. If you want to travel back in time to the end of socialism, this would be the perfect place – an experience that should also be included on a trip to Georgia!

Transfers: approx. 3 hours.

Trip to the Black Sea

After breakfast we take a tour of Kutaisi and visit the Bagrati Cathedral (11th century). Then we drive to Martvili at the village of Gatschedili. Here we explore one of the most beautiful natural sights in Georgia, the Martvili Canyon. The canyon filled with water is 2400 m long and 20-40m deep. We explore the canyon on a small boat trip and experience waterfalls and caves that give the canyon a special beauty.

Then we drive to the lively Batumi and check in at the luxurious 5-star hotel. The modern port city is located directly on the Black Sea coast and is a popular holiday destination in summer. The water is nice and warm for swimming, but the beaches are made of stones, so bathing shoes are highly recommended.

If you stroll along the boulevard onto the beach, you will discover luxurious hotels and restaurants, modern sculptures, fountains and playgrounds. The city has undergone rapid development in recent years, numerous new buildings have been added and many structures have been restored. At dusk life on the street begins, which characterizes the very safe city: cabaret, music and many happy people celebrate life and turn night into day. We have dinner together again (not included) and then say goodbye to our guide.

Transfers: approx. 3.5-4 hours.

Travel-specific information

Georgia for family is a varied trip for the whole family. The activities on offer, such as exciting mountain adventures or action-packed rafting tours, are possible from the age of 6. Georgia is also considered a very safe country and the people are very hospitable.

In Georgia we stay in child-friendly and good 3 to 5 star hotels. Some of the accommodations have a pool or a small spa area. The rooms in all hotels are big enough and offer enough space for two adults and two children. For families with three children, we can also request rooms with a connecting door.

During the whole family trip we are accompanied by a local and well-trained tour guide who brings us closer to the country of Georgia in a variety of interesting ways.

A personal tip:
Georgia is pure nature between the high mountains and the Black Sea, centuries-old history, a vibrant capital and small, almost untouched villages. This trip offers 9 days of variety against the beautiful backdrop of the Greater Caucasus and can be extended individually for a relaxing bathing holiday in Batumi. Nadja Albrecht, Managing Partner at For Family Reisen

Recommended age

We recommend this family trip from the age of 6. We give this age recommendation because some activities can only be carried out for parents and children after a certain age. These include, for example, a hike in the mountains or a rafting adventure on the Aravi river. A round trip is of course always associated with some transfers. Due to longer transfer times on some days, we also recommend a certain minimum age for this trip.

Georgia is a very safe country, as even the Federal Foreign Office reports. In addition, the Georgians are very fond of children and open-minded, so that young and old will feel very comfortable here.

On-site support

Who better to bring a foreign country closer to you than a local? It is important to us not only to show the children dream worlds of tourism, but also to convey the reality and life of the locals. That is why local guides accompany our guests and we stay in selected, locally run hotels and accommodations. We follow the principle of getting to know the country by looking behind the scenes – in addition to the classic highlights, our tour guides enable you to meet in person and convey authentic impressions of the respective travel destination from their own perspective. Our partners carefully select the guides for our family trips. They have good language skills, profound knowledge, special service awareness, many years of tour guide experience and are very child-friendly.

An open word

We offer family trips with encounters and insights into the culture and nature of the respective country. We define quality and luxury through small travel groups, typical quarters and personal ones care, support the group through local guides. Rustic accommodation with a good location is mostly more important to us than EU-standardized comfort and many stars. Sometimes the rooms of the guests are different in size, but we always strive to find the best possible for our guests – according to our selection criteria. In between there may be longer transfers or exhausting days – for a successful family trip, a certain amount of patience and personal consideration by each participant is therefore absolutely necessary. So many friendships have developed between our guests!

Anyone who books with For Family Reisen is open and respectful of a different culture and nature – this requires personal responsibility and a relaxed attitude. Please keep in mind that there are no EU standards in many travel countries and be prepared for simple circumstances. The clocks often tick much slower on site than in our home and sometimes unexpected things or incidents happen. Flexibility, serenity and above all a sense of humor are the main thing on a trip. For Family Reisen prepares every trip thoroughly, but there are still unforeseen situations and breakdowns that we cannot plan in advance.

If something bothers you on site, please say so immediately! Your tour guide and our partners in the travel destination can only help and improve you if you address any problems that arise. After your return, problem solutions – which could have been removed on site with little effort – are then usually no longer possible.

Tip tip

The habit of tipping is now very common in tourism and is based on American conditions. Wages in the service sector are often kept low, as the tip is seen as an essential, firmly calculated part of the wage. Therefore, tour guides, luggage carriers and other service personnel are dependent on tips. Tipping gives you the opportunity to express your satisfaction and appreciation for the personal commitment of the tour guide and bus driver. A tip is not necessarily expected in hotels, but is also very welcome. In our travel documents you will fi nd a recommendation on the amount of the tips for your trip. In the case of a group trip, it is common for all travel participants to collect the amounts they deem appropriate at the end of the trip and to hand them over to the tour guide or driver. Depending on the travel destination, your tour guide also collects a flat-rate amount from each participant for the tip fund, which he manages and appropriately distributes to the numerous helpers (luggage carriers, local guides, etc.). This means that you no longer have to worry about tips during the trip and we can ensure that the tips actually reach the relevant people.

Health / Vaccinations

We recommend that you get medical advice on infection and vaccination protection in good time before your trip and check your vaccination status according to the vaccination recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute. With your booking, we will send you detailed information on health care in your travel destination and inform you about current changes. As a tour operator, we are not allowed to make any direct vaccination recommendations. Please inform yourself about further vaccination or prophylaxis recommendations for your travel destination on the website of the Federal Foreign Office, at a tropical medicine institute or a doctor experienced in travel medicine and remember to carry out all vaccinations early.

travel booking

With your written booking by email you confirm that you have read and accept our terms and conditions. You will then receive your booking confirmation. Upon receipt of the deposit, transfer the deposit immediately and make the remaining payment by the specified date. You can choose between payment by bank transfer or credit card (Visa or Master Card).

With the booking confirmation for a trip, you will also receive detailed information about the country of travel, information about the flights and flight times booked for you, updated detailed health information, vaccination recommendations, safety information, possibly information about a visa or special entry requirements.

In your postal travel documents, which you will receive approx. 3 weeks before departure, you will find a detailed packing list, current information about the country, worth knowing Tips and hints, important contacts to local contacts, emergency numbers, a list of accommodations and a list of participants.

flight booking

For Family Reisen only flies with renowned scheduled and charter airlines. For some trips we have reserved seats with airlines in advance. These are special rates for tour operators with limited space, which we have to return approx. 8–12 weeks before departure if the seats have not been booked. If there are no space allotments, we would be happy to request individual flights for you. Because of our expertise and our conditions as an organizer, we often find the cheapest solutions for our guests. The price for the individual flights (single seat bookings) is the current daily price, which we unfortunately cannot reserve long-term. Please also note that different terms and conditions apply to these flights. When the tickets are issued, the amount for the flight costs is due immediately. In the event of cancellation, 100% cancellation costs apply.

If you decide to book a flight yourself, please inform yourself about the rebooking and cancellation conditions. For Family Reisen does not reimburse rebooking or cancellation costs for self-booked flights if a trip is canceled or postponed.

If you want to book a flight through us, we need the full names and dates of birth of all participants. Please make sure that the information about your name (last name, first name, title, double name etc.) exactly matches the information in the machine-readable line in your passport (below the photo). For security reasons, passengers can be excluded from transportation if the name on your flight plan and the name on the machine-readable line of the passport differ. Should a change / new booking be necessary due to the incorrect / incomplete information, all associated costs are at your expense.

In some countries, departure tax is payable locally for departure abroad, which For Family Reisen cannot pay in advance. The amount of the airport tax to be paid can be found in your country information and travel documents.

In most cases, you can order a train to the Deutsche Bahn flight ticket from us for flights booked through us. This ticket is valid from every German train station on all Deutsche Bahn trains. All trains to Deutsche Bahn flight tickets purchased through For Family Reisen are environmentally friendly Umwelt Plus tickets. The train journey can only be booked in connection with an international flight. The flight ticket / booking confirmation must be shown on the train at the ticket inspection.

mobility restrictions

Our adventure trips for families are trips that are generally not suitable for people with reduced mobility. If you are unsure about the requirements, please contact us before booking.

The climate in Georgia is characterized by strong contrasts: Almost tropical climate can be found on the Black Sea coast, followed by high mountain ranges with alpine weather and the rest of the country mostly has a continental climate.

In general, it can be said that Georgia is spared strong fluctuations in climate, which can be attributed to the Black Sea and the Caucasus. In the summer months of July and August, mostly 30 degrees Celsius are reached. The best travel time for many holidaymakers is the months of September and October as well as April to June. It is not quite as hot and humid here, but very pleasant and not too cool. In autumn the temperature is a warm 25 degrees Celsius.

Flight, hotel and program changes reserved with comparable scope of services.
