Since the topics of giftedness and above-average talent are still not a regular part of educator training, it is still necessary to provide information on how to recognize highly gifted and above-average gifted kindergarten and preschool children, what characteristics to look out for, what advice to give to parents, which IQ tests are suitable, what you have to consider when consulting and coaching.

Already in kindergarten you can see whether you have a gifted or a gifted child in front of you. These children have problems dealing with their peers, they often choose a toy for older children, are interested in letters and / or numbers or can sometimes already read and / or write.

IMPORTANT! Talented children can read, write and arithmetic teach themselves and are NOT the result of their ambitious parents, as the saying goes.

IMPORTANT is also the fact that a child can be highly gifted but still cannot read, write or do arithmetic.

Again, we have to point out that there are different types of intelligences and talents or high talents and that each child must be seen individually.

By the way, we have also set up a checklist for recognizing talented children in kindergarten. A good opportunity for an exchange between educators and parents. This checklist for educators is a good addition to the parents’ checklist.

When talented children are bored, they either become behavioral by casually strolling, shouting, not listening, or showing other negative behaviors. This mostly applies to boys. Girls often seem shy, fearful or dreamy and don’t show what they really can. But be careful, here too exceptions confirm the rule.

Children with special cognitive skills often have motor problems. This affects both gross and fine motor skills. Group games aren’t necessarily your thing either.

If you want to be sure that your suspicion of a talent is confirmed, the IQ test is the right way. But not all intelligence tests are suitable. It is important to be well informed. You can find important information about testing under Intelligence test and under our quality notices.

If you have any questions or specific problems, take advantage of the opportunity and speak to our specialists on the advisory phone about your child’s giftedness. Above-average gifted and gifted kindergarten and preschool children sometimes have problems in the following areas:

  • they don’t play with children of the same age,
  • they refuse certain games or actions, e.g. the chair circle,
  • they criticize the existing toys,
  • they are oriented towards older children or the educators,
  • they appear hyperactive,
  • they look dreamy,
  • they have a teaching effect on other children, even on the educators,
  • They have problems with gross and / or fine motor skills,
  • they seem bored,
  • they often look "old-fashioned",
  • they do not like to paint and tinker.

If only a few of these characteristics apply to a child, an IQ test should be carried out, i.e. that child should have an adequate one intelligence test tested or in any case, specialized help should be sought. Early recognition and action can save children from school problems.

Please make sure that you are only advised by experts who have completed pedagogical or psychological training or have studied in these areas. Tests may only be carried out by educators and psychologists.

Encourage and challenge gifted and talented kindergarten and preschool children.

Talented and gifted children need a lot of attention, which is not always possible in a larger group.

However, if these children do not have to play “in accordance with their age”, but are also allowed to use the materials of older children, these children are often better off. Talented children in particular generally have a high level of social skills, although adults often misunderstand them.

Small tasks that strengthen the community and that give the children the opportunity to help others or to support others contribute to a better understanding of these children.

With talented and highly gifted children, even with preschool children, it is essential to ensure that they are not challenged, because this contributes significantly to the loss of self-confidence. It is therefore also the responsibility of the educators that these children are challenged cognitively.

If you can already read, write and count in the range of 20, we generally recommend early schooling, even before the deadline. Since this is often difficult for the parents to enforce, it is important that the educators working with the children support the parents in this. If the child is not yet “ready” for school, which is rarely the case, it can the child should go to kindergarten for one year, however, if the above mentioned Knowledge available, can be trained directly in the 2nd class.
