Dental aesthetics: what is aesthetic dentistry?

Beautiful teeth, healthy gums and functional harmony

Aesthetic dentistry is the field of dentistry that deals with the appearance, the aesthetics of the teeth.
Dental aesthetics include not only beautiful, white teeth, but also healthy gums and the functional harmony of the rows of teeth of the upper and lower jaw.

The teeth have a great influence on the appearance of a person. Beautiful, white teeth signal health, youth and self-confidence. Missing, polished, discolored or defective teeth, on the other hand, affect appearance, well-being and quality of life.

Red and white tooth aesthetics

An important prerequisite for beautiful, aesthetic teeth is the harmony of red and white tooth aesthetics: White, nature-oriented teeth are surrounded by healthy, pink-red gums.
Of particular importance is the restoration of the red esthetics for the front teeth in the upper jaw, because here they are clearly visible when speaking and laughing. Defects in the gums also occur in the event of tooth loss, which can only be reconstructed perfectly with mostly complex pre-treatment. In these cases, the specialized dentist can use a long-term temporary to form soft tissue flaps into so-called pseudo-papillae, which restore the natural gum tissue between the front teeth.

Gum treatment for periodontitis is another area of application for red aesthetics. Due to periodontitis, the chronic bacterial inflammation of the gums and bony teeth, the gums and jawbones recede. A specialist in dental aesthetics has surgical options to rebuild bones and connective tissue. In advance, inflamed gums (gingivitis) and gum pockets as well as damaged teeth must be restored with special measures.

There are numerous options available to the patient for restoring white aesthetics.
In the case of simple discoloration, the teeth can be whitened using bleaching. Non-aesthetic and health-threatening fillings made of amalgam can be replaced by tooth-colored ceramic inlays. Full ceramic or zircon crowns enable perfect and natural tooth aesthetics with little grinding of the teeth.
With the help of thin ceramic shells, so-called veneers, which are adhesively bonded to the teeth, the dentist can correct stubborn discolorations or optically shorten teeth that appear long due to the decline of the gums.
Abutments made of plastics or composites can also aesthetically compensate for tooth loss, particularly in the anterior region.

Aesthetics and function are inseparable

The greatest challenge for the specialists in dental aesthetics is restoring the aesthetics and function of the teeth. Purely cosmetic solutions do not serve the patient. Rather, it needs solutions that can restore an undisturbed function, i.e. enable a harmonious occlusion of the teeth of the upper and lower jaw. Aesthetics and function are inextricably linked.

With a disturbed occlusion, a so-called "false bite", there is a functional diagnosis (functional analysis) in the dental practice to determine the contact relationships of the teeth of the upper and lower jaw as well as the position of the temporomandibular joint. This is because malfunctions of teeth and TMJ joints can cause TMJ diseases, CMD and CMD symptoms.
The therapy goal at CMD is the restoration of eugnathy, the functional and morphological unity of teeth, tooth support, jaw joints and masticatory muscles.

The connection between aesthetics and function becomes particularly clear when patients have tooth loss of several millimeters due to bruxism / teeth grinding. The rows of teeth lose their natural shape, length and function. An abrasion bit with shortened teeth, lowering of the bite height and horizontal chewing pattern has developed. In order to successfully rehabilitate these patients, a Complete Functional Reconstruction – KFR must be performed.

Before implementing a KFR, diagnostic splint therapy is carried out in order to achieve the physiological occlusion with the correct and stable jaw joint position. From this stable joint position, the necessary anterior canine guidance and the required posterior tooth support can be restored.

Cooperation between specialized dentists for good aesthetic results

More and more patients come to the dental practice with toothache, functional dental problems and poor dental aesthetics and pose a special challenge to the dentist.
In order to achieve good aesthetic results, dentists with different degrees of expertise work together in aesthetic dentistry. Periodontologists responsible for the health of the gums and the dental appliance, endodontists responsible for tooth preservation and implantologists who replace teeth lost with dental implants and orthodontists for any necessary tooth position corrections are involved in restoring the harmony of "red" and "white".

Team dentist and dental technician

The dentist and dental technician team has a special place in the aesthetic care of patients. Natural oral aesthetics can only achieve good results if the dentist and the dental technician are very familiar with the basic principles of dental aesthetics and have a systematic therapy concept that can guarantee an aesthetic, functional and sustainable result. The required systematic encompasses all treatment steps, from the medical history to diagnosis and planning to therapy.

The common goal is to provide patients with dentures that are individually adapted to their oral situation and overall appearance. The dental technology measures should be based on nature in terms of design, shape and color and fit the patient’s personality.

The dental technician has numerous options for this requirement, such as individual shade advice in the dental laboratory, the use of wax-up, mock-up and the fabrication of temporary restorations.
With this team-oriented approach, the patient is always directly involved in the treatment process and can express individual wishes.
The final restoration is then carried out in close coordination between the dentist, patient and dental technician.
