Giessuhr

EN: With plants everywhere in urban space, the question arises, who pours them? All residents of the city! Who pours a plant, sets the watering clock and shows when the last time was poured. Next to it is how often must be poured. This way, the next passing by can take over the work.

EN: Who is watering them? All the inhabitants of the city! Anyone watering a plant changes the watering clock to show when it was last watered. Next to it you can see how often you have to water. So the next passer-by can take over the work.

conversation zones

EN: The more people know about each other (social capital), the easier it will be to live resource-sparingly and happily. In public areas – where it lends itself – call zones are set up. For example, one on three benches at the station marked as a “conversation zone”. If you feel like talking to others, sit down here. If you prefer to read something in peace or podcast, for example, sit on the other benches.

Waste bins as teachers: “Have You Tried It Unpackaged?”

EN: Unpacked shops in Germany are increasing. If there were only unpacked shops, rubbish bins in public areas could become almost superfluous or converted into biowaste bins. So our garbage pails train the city’s population and / or become signposts to the next unpacked shop.

EN: Unpackaged shops in Germany are on the rise. If there were only unpackaged shops waste bins in public spaces could become almost useless or could be converted into organic waste bins. So our waste bins educate the urban population and / or become signposts to the next unpackaged shop.

1. Introduction

Cities hack? → Examples

Task: We are looking for hacks and strategies for the climate-friendly reconstruction of the city, which are themselves sustainable. The idea, for example, to put hundreds of family-sized aluminum containers with aquaponics in the urban space is technically a city change idea, but not sustainable in my opinion. Think about energy and material consumption. Uses rather existing infrastructures. Stop hoeing.

Aim: It is about collecting ideas and designing pictures (!) For the sustainably rebuilt city. A more artistic, activist, communicative approach. We make possibilities visible and open worlds of imagination, quick & dirty. In short, we’re brainstorming & Communication project as a real product development project.

2 Hackfabrik format

In principle, we do a 5-day hackathon with 6 hours of daily work here. But you do not just design a project, but we do factory assembly line work. One hack follows the other! Point 10:00 it starts and point 16:00 clock is over! Time clock. No overtime. That’s the idea. Here is our structure:

Two assemblies per day!

We meet twice a day for a quick update and for swapping between the teams. 10:15 and 14:00.

team

You always work at least in teams of two. When you’re done with a hack, we’ll swap between the teams. The exchange happens at the assemblies. So we also do an exercise in teamwork here.

task cards

What should you work on? We have a number of task cards here. They set topics, raise questions, give directions. Choose one and work for it. Is there a topic missing? Do you notice something in your discussion? You can always add new task cards. Introduce them during the next assembly.

material & Tool

We have a table here that has a lot of connectors and tools on it. We also have access to the workshops if you want to build something. We also have a budget for purchases. If you want or need to buy something, come up to me for a quick confirmation and money.

quality?

How good should the works be? You have the choice. We are doing a video and photo documentation, ie communication. Mockups of your ideas so in principle enough, practically Proquisitenbau. But if ambition grabs you, you’re welcome to build something right, take your time, and even test it out, and even evaluate it. Go for it! We have here a playing field for your experiments.

documentation

The documentation is the main thing in this project. If you like, we are actually filmed here film pictures and photos. The structure of the documentation therefore has its own large headline:

3 documentation

Every hack concludes with its documentation! The documentation consists of two parts video and picture.

I. Video

You show the thing in action, more with pans than cuts. We’re doing a mocumentary. In the video we show the hack and a * citizen * (played by you) who says exactly two sentences to it.

“I do … (describe concrete activity)
Because we … (Describe concrete activity or anchoring or context in city life.) “

Example:

I plant carrots here. Because we use all the open spaces in the city for growing food.

Be creative. You will already find a way to explain your hack in this context. Sometimes you just have to think about a few corners.

Here I do not park my car. Because we have these floors reserved for cargo bikes throughout the city.

The language does not matter. The video can be quiet in several languages.

Record your video and save it. Turns short material. Ideally hardly or better even no cutting material! The hack must be well staged or understandable. At the end of the week, we’ll cut all the videos in a row (volunteers for the cut!) With a framework that we’ll come up with. If we succeed in the video, we will submit it to the Foresight Festival (motto 2019: Vision finds city). Maybe we even win a prize.

update: We gave up this form of documentation in the course of the project. It would have to be technically prepared with better camera and sound technology. Our first attempts can be found but linked in the documentation above.

II. Picture & text

Shoot up to 3 pictures from each hack. Upload the pictures up in

Write below your pictures your two sentences from the video. Put a headline over your hack (forgive a name). Please use this name for your pictures “Tree 1, Tree 2, Tree 3”.

Openness Makes The World Go Round! We do research here! If we are lucky, then we will create something that is relevant to others and will continue to be used. To do that, we need to enable others to continue using our work without any problem. But since we create a documentation collaboratively, we have afterwards a hard-to-pervasive mess of copyrights, which made carefree re-use extremely difficult. My suggestion is that we all agree to put our posts under the CC0 1.0 license.

So basically, you’re declaring that you’re freeing your copyrights for your pictures and snippets of text – all people, including themselves, are allowed to use our material afterwards for any purpose.

Agreed? If so, then writing to the pad, uploading the pictures there and in the GDrive and submitting your videos is your approval.
