Former Aachen Bishop Heinrich Mussinghoff has clarified his statements on dealing with victims of abuse. He had indeed spoken to people affected by sexual violence, but to adults by now, not minors.

He told the Catholic News Agency (KNA) on Wednesday. "I did that when the desire came."In a direct exchange with children or young people, however, he would have been concerned about striking the right tone. Such victim talks would have overwhelmed him.

Personnel director first point of contact

Mussinghoff pointed out that families and parishes were also affected by the acts of abuse by clergymen. Therefore, he said, he has repeatedly talked about it during visits to parishes with their representatives and with parents. The first point of contact for those directly affected, however, was the diocesan personnel director, the abuse commissioners and the expert commission founded in 2011 with psychologists and trauma therapists, among others, because they were specially trained for this purpose.

From time to time, he himself has had contact with victims of abuse, without being able to say exactly when he spoke to whom.
