Children’s teeth are exposed to many dangers

Sugars and acids in sweets and foods attack tooth enamel and can quickly cause damage.

In addition, the youthful enamel is not yet as resistant and children often do not brush as carefully as adults.

Possible consequences: Caries (holes in the teeth) can develop within a few months. This is often much faster than in adults.

Some mothers know the consequences: Sleepless nights because a child has toothache. It doesn’t have to be: Regular prophylaxis at the dentist’s can effectively protect your children’s teeth against tooth decay. Here you can find out what is done with prophylaxis:

Health insurance companies pay for basic prophylaxis

Even health insurance companies have long recognised that regular prophylaxis prevents tooth damage. They therefore pay a basic prophylaxis for children and adolescents.

However, the statutory health insurances do not reimburse some sensible prophylaxis services, such as fissure sealing of the small molars (see below). If you want the best possible protection for your children, please contact us: We will be happy to advise you.

What is done with prophylaxis?

First of all: prophylaxis only makes sense if it is carried out regularly. Half-yearly appointments are common. Shorter intervals may also be necessary for children with a high caries risk.

And this is the procedure of a prophylaxis session for your child:

  • First the teeth are stained with a food colouring. This indicates dental plaque, which is otherwise not so easily recognizable.
  • We show your child in the mirror where there are still unclean areas and where it will have to clean more carefully in the future.
  • Of course, we also show him the best way to brush his teeth. Together with the child we practice the correct brushing technique.
  • Afterwards our prophylaxis lady cleans all teeth gently and thoroughly. Even in areas that your child cannot reach while brushing.
  • Finally, your child will receive tips on a healthy diet for their teeth.

Fissure sealing to protect against caries

Teeth naturally have fine dimples in which bacteria can multiply – especially the large and small molars on their chewing surfaces. These bacteria colonies cannot be removed with a toothbrush.

This is where the so-called fissure sealing helps: the pits are sealed with plastic so that bacteria no longer have a chance. This seal is renewed every few years and offers very good protection against caries.

The small cheek teeth should also be sealed.

For some unseen reason, statutory health insurance only covers the cost of sealing the large molars. But the small molars are also at risk. Therefore, we recommend that you also have them sealed and bear the costs yourself.

Prophylaxis should be fun for your children

We want your children to be happy to come for prophylaxis. This is why it takes place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and with a language adapted to the age.

Your children can playfully learn how to brush their teeth carefully and correctly. Of course, they will also be rewarded if they regularly take part in prophylaxis. We have a large “reward basket” with many attractive little gifts to choose from.

Young people also benefit from prophylaxis

Please remember that only regular prophylaxis at least every six months offers reliable protection against dental diseases. The health insurance companies cover the costs of the basic prophylaxis up to the age of 18.

So there is no reason why you shouldn’t register your offspring for prophylaxis now. You are doing the best thing for their dental health and your children will thank you for it later.
