Healthy nutrition for children, german children’s fund

A plate of health for children every day

Living healthy is not only important for the body but also for the soul. How does it look in a child when he is overweight? How well can it concentrate when it comes to school on an empty stomach? Hunger can really hurt. Bad nutrition too.

The German Children’s Fund enables children from families who are affected by poverty to eat good and wholesome meals. Because as a child, those who do not experience what a healthy diet is and how good it can taste will hardly be able to make up for it as an adult.

Max is 11 years old. He takes his first meal of the day around 2 p.m. This usually consists of a thawed frozen pizza, which he pushes himself into the oven. His mother is a single parent and works full time as a salesperson. She lacks the time, the money and often the strength to prepare Max a full lunch or dinner. Max does not know that he does not eat enough, nor what is part of a healthy meal. Max is happy if he can get enough.

The food fund of the German Children’s Fund

Schools, clubs and other institutions are financially supported in cooking courses through the food fund of the German Children’s Fund. We cut, cook and enjoy the specially prepared work with pride. Parents are also involved in the projects, after all what they have learned should be implemented at home.

Children from financially disadvantaged families in particular prefer fast food or lemonades instead of whole grain bread or fruit. At home, they often lack the money for wholesome meals or for a warm lunch at school. Single parents in particular have a hard time here: their income is often insufficient in the front and in the back, which is why they work a lot and therefore have less time for a meal together or to cook a healthy meal. Even those who receive Hartz IV have hardly any options to eat a balanced diet. The daily rate is just half of what would be required for four healthy meals a day.

A single chance for health!

Children have only one chance of growing up healthy! With your donation we can support further nutrition projects and help children to live consciously and healthily. Bit by bit, bite by bite.

The consequences of poor eating habits often last a lifetime. Heavy weight gain, diabetes, bone weakness or cardiovascular diseases are often based on improper nutrition in childhood. Around 1.9 million children and adolescents between the ages of 3 and 17 in Germany are overweight or obese. These children don’t just suffer physically. Those who are fat are chosen last in the sports group, are laughed at, suffer from less self-esteem – and are often disadvantaged because the child is less trusted. Soul scars that never go away.

Cooking with children. With celebrity chef Björn Moschinski

The vegan chef Björn Moschinski has been the patron of the food fund of the German Children’s Fund since 2013. That means: chopping vegetables with children, showing them the endless possibilities of preparation, developing new recipes together – and finally enjoying the meals together. A bite of healthy eating with Björn Moschinski.

"It is always astonishing how quickly children are enthusiastic about the task and sometimes I wish that parents in particular can further this enthusiasm. Cooking demands a lot of discipline, patience and sensitivity – we try to convey this idea in a playful way."

Four nutrition tips from Björn Moschinski!

  1. Less is more
The more valuable the food is, the less we have to consume it to get all the nutrients and vitamins. Ripe and freshly harvested ingredients are particularly valuable.

Gentle preparation
Careful preparation of the dishes is advisable, as many of the nutrients and vitamins necessary for us are destroyed when exposed to excessive heat (cooking, roasting, braising).

Less sugar and fat
Sugar and fat are abundant in the European diet. The sugar required by the body can easily be met with ripe and, at best, regional fruit.

  • More fruits, vegetables and whole grains
I can only support the official recommendation to eat fruit and vegetables 5 times a day. Fruit, vegetables and whole grains provide people with all the necessary nutrients.
