How do I find the right baby high chair? Which high chair should I buy? ?
Where can I find a manufacturer-independent high chair test and which models are the test winners ?
When choosing one Baby high chair different things play a role. Among other things, the stability, the belt system, the weight of the high chair or the possibility of folding the chair (suitability for travel). In our High chair test 2018 we have given priority to these points.

In daily use, it is often also a question of how well the material and any existing covers can be cleaned. Anyone who has ever watched a baby try to eat knows why. The handling of the belt system (if available) and the suitability for children of older age are also important when choosing the right highchair. After all, you don’t want to buy the next model after just a few months when the child has become a little heavier.
The topic of safety should play the biggest role in the choice of the model: especially in the first weeks and months, because the little ones are not yet quite as secure and need sufficient support. Then later because they develop a lot of their own ideas about what to do in the high chair everything can do. Of course, you should never take your eyes off the child in its high seat.
The “baby high chair” standard therefore even requires that parents be warned of this again and again. But even in an unobserved moment, the chair must not tip over and the child must sit so securely that it cannot get out of it so quickly. But if, for example, the seat is too large so that the child can pull one leg up and stretch out on the other side of the crotch belt, it could get caught or slip. This can have very unpleasant consequences. But it shouldn’t be too tight. Who wants that you can only get the baby into and out of the baby highchair with great shouting? Of course we pay attention in our High chair comparison also ensure that the maximum chairs comply with the DIN standard, which means that when pressure is applied by weight from one side (approx. 15 kg), it does not tip over, but stands firmly. In addition, it is important to us that the test winners in the high chair test in particular have no sharp edges and corners.
Our comparisons are based on our own experience and tests, on the other hand we collect detailed information from manufacturers’ sites and from various shops. Customer reviews also play a major role in our overviews and comparisons.

New test at Ökotest from 2018:
A short time ago, Ökotest repeated the comparison, which is now 5 years old, and 10 High chairs made of wood tested. Again, everyone was high chair different things like tipping safety, slipping, or the pollutants examined. According to Ökotest, above all the safety against tipping has improved in all models compared to 2011. Again, highchairs like the Tripp Trapp from Stokke, the Hauck Alpha +, or the Tissi from Dawost scored “good”. In our view, the test is very subjective, as there are currently over 100 different models made of wood, and at least as many made of other materials.

Our own high chair test 2018
we ourselves have 3 children (1 to 6) years in our home. There are also countless children and babies in our circle of friends. We have therefore been able to test some highchairs ourselves over the past few years or have exchanged ideas with other parents. The result of our own high chair test ´s essentially coincides with the test results from Stiftung Warentest and Ökotest. One of our favorites was the Storchenmühle high chair Happy Baby. Unfortunately, Storchenmühle discontinued the production of highchairs, which is why you won’t find them anywhere else in comparisons. We still miss the reclining backrest on most combination highchairs.
From our own perspective, we can say that for most parents, the most important thing is how comfortable a high chair is, how easy it is to clean a high chair, and above all how safe a high chair is. Nobody wants to risk accidents because the baby has fallen out of the high chair. In today’s world, however, quick and easy maintenance is becoming an important issue. That is why this has now been included in almost every highchair test as an important criterion. Nobody has the time to clean a high chair for half an hour after eating.
Care of a high chair
Most plastic models are easy to wipe clean. Unfortunately, it is often the case that models with many hinges and adjustment options are relatively difficult to clean. Food residues stuck in the hinges can often not simply be wiped away. In our high chair test, we therefore pay attention to how long it takes to clean a high chair and whether there are any places on the high chair that may not be accessible.
What is definitely recommended is a so-called game and dining board. This is optimally made of plastic, even if the child’s chair itself is made of wood. Then the dining board (e.g. Hauck Alpha Tray) can simply be put in the dishwasher after the meal, which makes work extremely easy and always ensures a hygienically clean chair. If you choose models made of wood, you should also make sure that moisture cannot act for too long. Otherwise, the high chair can swell ugly especially at the edges.
What is the difference between a high chair and a baby high chair? ?
This can be answered relatively easily from a technical point of view. A high chair is not subject to any age restriction and is not defined for a certain age by the EU directive. Baby highchairs, on the other hand, have to meet certain requirements, but are designed for an age of 6-36 months. If a child’s chair can be converted (e.g. from a baby high chair to a child’s high chair), then the chair must also comply with both EU standards. Of course, it makes sense to choose a child’s chair if possible so that it can be used both for the baby age and later. Otherwise you buy a second one later. However, high chairs designed exclusively for babies usually offer better features up to 36 months of age. So with these the entire seat shell can usually be folded, which z. B. is unfortunately not possible with a high chair. With our Baby high chair test 2018 we want to provide the most accurate help possible when making a purchase decision. Otherwise you will be annoyed later about additional costs. A chair that grows with you, and that for as long as possible is an important criterion when considering the total costs.
When is a baby allowed to sit in a high chair? ?
One cannot answer this question generally. Basically, you should make sure that your child can sit independently. If you use a multi-purpose high chair with a seat shell, the baby can also sit in the high chair before sitting down on its own. A combination high chair or high chair should never be used too early, as this will damage the back to lead can. If you use a multipurpose high chair in which the seat can be folded over completely for feeding or tilted, that this seating position is not suitable for solid food, but only for drinking liquid food or, at most, eating porridge.
How long should you use a seat reducer ?
The correct sitting position is very important in the high chair. This includes, among other things, that the baby has no way of moving the legs past the central spar. Once a baby has both legs on one side of the middle spar, it could theoretically slip and injure itself badly. The back of the baby should also be supported during the first few weeks so that there is no back pain or postural damage. In addition, the baby should sit so far forward in the chair that the legs do not rest with the calves on the edge of the seat. It quickly becomes uncomfortable and the baby starts to wriggle. For these reasons, the seat reducer should be used until it becomes too tight for the child. Of course, the dining table must not cut into the stomach, and otherwise you will notice when your child gets too tight in the high chair due to the seat reducer.
When can you start using a highchair without a hanger? ?
That depends on the high chair on the one hand, but also on your child on the other. If the baby high chair has a sensible and stable belt system, you can probably leave out the bar rather than just a simple crotch strap attached to the high chair. In principle, however, you should never remove the bracket before the child can move into and out of the chair alone. Most children master this between 18 and 24 months.
The greatest risk of injury in a high chair is that the baby tips over or falls out of the chair. Since children’s highchairs are now tested for safety against tipping over in every highchair, the issue of tipping over is hardly an issue in a child’s chair. However, there are still cases in which babies or toddlers fall out of a baby high chair. This can only be tested to a limited extent in a high chair test. We make sure that the High chair test winner have a correspondingly good belt system. A 3-point belt is the minimum requirement, for a baby high chair it should be a 5-point belt.
How long can a high chair be used? How long can a baby sit in a high chair? ?
Again, the existing model is important. You should never exceed the specified maximum weight of a high chair. The respective high chairs are only tested in the high chair test of the Stiftung Warentest or Ökotest for tipping safety and stability up to the specified weight. In addition, a multi-purpose high chair can usually not be used as long as high chairs, since the seat shells are generally much narrower. Normally, stair highchairs have the best service life. These can often be used as normal stools until adulthood. Some models can even carry loads of up to 100 kg.
