Hiking in Bavaria – valleys or mountains?

As a blogger, I always present something special, but an entire federal state? With hiking Bavaria I am also going new ways and hey, that should be exciting &# 128521; But what do I start with and what is the most beautiful hiking idea?

In recent years I have been traveling around Bavaria a lot, after all I live near Würzburg and thanks to the A3 and A7 I can get anywhere quickly. So I was in the Berchtesgadener Land, the Alpenwelt Karwendel, Inzell im Chiemgau, Prien am Chiemsee, the Frankenjura, the Franconian Switzerland, in the Nürnberger Land, I was hiking in the Allgäu, I visited the Rhön and reported on the Frankenwald hiking marathon.

Hiking Bavaria has led me to great rock formations, I’ve been to castles, relaxed at lakes and explored gorges. There is a diverse program in Bavaria. I would like to introduce you to the most beautiful places, destinations and regions in the following hiking blog. What made me the most comfortable as a hiker??

Water, it is water in the form of lakes, rivers or gorges. So let’s start where water plays an important role for a hiking holiday.

Gorge in Bavaria

When it is hot outside, a gorge hike brings some cooling. There are many of them in southern Bavaria, especially in the Allgäu. But there are also spectacular gorges with wild water in the Karwendel and the Berchtesgadener Land.

Let’s start in the outermost corner of Bavaria, in the Karwendel Alps. There is the Leutasch Gorge and the waterfall trail there. The latter is not very long, but highly recommended. The Leutasch meanders there for the last 200 meters through a high gorge that is secured with footbridges. Start is the small beer garden at the entrance and the landlady was very friendly, helped me and there you can have something to eat or drink afterwards.

The Leutasch Gorge

But the long Leutasch Gorge is also worth seeing. The hiking trail runs along the Leutasch and is called the Leutascher Geisterklamm. While the gorge is a real must, the food in the alpine hut at the end of the gorge was the Supergau and I just wanted a scrambled egg …

But you can also hike several lakes and alpine huts around Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau. Among other things, I was on the Karwendelgrat and my panorama shows the great location and the telescope, an information station with a restaurant.

The waterfall climb

There is a small highlight in the Leutasch Gorge. The waterfall climb. At 250m it is probably the shortest gorge, or one of the shortest. Nevertheless, it is impressive with a huge waterfall at the end of the footbridges. Thanks to short and crisp there is still time for the beer garden.

The Breitachklamm

We were in the Hörnerdörfer and the Breitachklamm is just a hop away. It was winter and just before Christmas, but snow was coming. Due to the lack of snow, the decision was made to open the Breitach Gorge to visitors, as a kind of bad weather variant. We had to go there and there were some other hikers &# 128521;

You had to be careful in some places, but the path quality was good for winter conditions and even grit was on the way.

Needless to say, the Breitachklamm is beautiful and worth a visit even in winter.

Eistobel

A gem that is not so well known, but still a wonderful day trip. We’re talking about Eistobel, a gorge with cascading waterfalls. The hiking tour is only 4 km long, but there are loops that still have a nice piece of Allgäu ready. This also shows that hiking in Bavaria can also be cheap. Admission is only € 1.50 and there are no parking fees. Very beautiful gorge that is not overcrowded and has many benches ready for a break.

Partnach Gorge in winter

One of the few gorges that is open in winter. However, it can be closed due to the weather. It is worth taking a look at the homepage here. Especially after a cold period, the gorge becomes an ice ravine with great ice formations.

Hiking in the Allgäu

My visit was to the Horned Villages. You can hike very well here, but the region is also ideal for trips to the rest of the Allgäu. Above all, it is not to be overrun here … mostly anyway. There is a lot going on in the mountains, which you can also reach with the Hörnerbahnen, especially when the weather is nice. But you have to experience the beautiful views and mountain huts live. Our first visit was in early autumn, when everything was already light golden brown. So we could really enjoy the hike on the Hörnergrat. Then there was Kaiserschmarrn and it was super tasty … as so often &# 128521;

At the end of November it is much quieter and the harsh winter mood without the hustle and bustle was incredibly relaxing. We had actually hoped for winter mood with snow, but that was also very pleasant.

Gorge in the Allgäu

A visit to the Breitachklamm was obvious. Thanks to the lack of snow, it was opened again before Christmas and presented itself with some ice and snow.

Otherwise there are of course plenty of hiking trails here. We were e.g. on the panorama trail around Balderschwang, visited the moor trail and took a loop around the Ausee. You should definitely take the Malerwinkel with you! Hiking in the Allgäu is beautiful everywhere, the Hörnerdörfer are no exception and of course also belong to the Allgäu hiking triology.

Alpenwelt Karwendel

Framed by the Karwendel Mountains, the Wetterstein and the Kranzberg, the Alpenwelt Karwendel is located with the 3 towns of Wallgau, Krün and Mittenwald.

Inzell lakes, a waterfall and the gorge

I’ve been to Inzell several times and there are good reasons for that. I said yes, hiking in Bavaria is diverse and here several hiking interests come together. From here you can start several hut tours with different levels of difficulty. I have already eaten in some huts and they always have a good menu &# 128521;

Of course you can also hike the lakes and I am particularly fond of Frillensee. A wonderful location with a backdrop like in a picture book. The Frillensee is not big, but it doesn’t matter. Lingering and chatting with other hikers is pure deceleration.

What I always like to do is visit the Weißbach gorge with the waterfall. Especially on hot days you can cool off here and not just at the waterfall. We have already laid on the Weißbach with a blanket and walked through the water like Kneipp. Refreshing and healthy.

Last but not least, the Salzalpensteig also goes here. A premium quality long-distance hiking trail that stretches from Prien to the Salzburg region.

Beautiful huts, many hiking opportunities, lakes, gorges and nice hosts are typical for hiking in Bavaria. I like to hike and take pictures here because it’s just beautiful.

Hiking in the Berchtesgadener Land

I got to know the Berchtesgadener Land at the hiking festival. Yes, the Watzmann and Königssee are the big highlights, but you often forget that there is much, really much more to discover here. Salt is a dominant topic here and it is not surprising that some thematic trails follow the salt path. Hiking in Bavaria is deeply rooted here, as are traditions and a very good hiking service. Walks alone are no longer enough today and the combination with a visit to the salt mine is better. You shouldn’t miss a stop and services such as hiking maps, hiking offers and a well-stocked website with information on GPS, hiking routes and excursion highlights … let’s say it goes without saying.

Unfortunately, the hiking festival only ever directed my attention to parts of the Berchtesgadener Land and I am already looking forward to exploring other hiking trails and highlights during a hiking holiday.

The Franconian Forest

I was fixed here at the 24h of Bavaria in Bad Steben, where I hiked a tour and that led me through the Höllental. A year later, the first Frankenwald hiking marathon took place, which was the night route of the 24h. These and all other events were always sold out. Speaks for itself. Similar to the 24h of Bavaria, the locations change here too, and so hikers have a new highlight in the Franconian Forest every year. But what always remains the same is the good service and family atmosphere. When hiking in Bavaria, the Franconian Forest is one of them! Not least because of its quality hiking trails and climbing glass.

The land of 24h hikes

The 24h of Bavaria was really not the first event of its kind, but it should be groundbreaking for the industry. What started small and included a competition for the venue in advance, quickly became a cult and is still called a hiking event. The venue changes annually for the 444 starters who have to be drawn. With the Bavarian Forest, the Franconian Forest, the Dreiburgenland, the Räuberland, Berchtesgaden / Inzell and the Allgäu, the 24h of Bavaria have already made guest appearances in really great hiking regions. But it didn’t stop there. From this event further events developed like the Frankenwald hiking marathon and the 12h from the robber country.

In recent years, however, other 24-hour hikes have been established and the 24-hour Trophy in particular has several of the best 24-hour hikes in its luggage. With the hiking festival in Berchtesgaden there are 3 hikes including the Watzmann crossing. the 24h at Tegernsee connects the 3 lakes Tegernsee, Spitzingsee and Schliersee to a 24h hike and the Allgäu is present with Oberstaufen.

But the Columbia Hike and Run series also makes a guest appearance in Bavaria. With Plech in Franconian Switzerland and Oberammergau, there are 2 other top 24-hour hikes in Bavaria.

Hiking trails in Bavaria

Let’s start with the surprise tour in 2016. A hike very close to me, in the Nuremberg region. The karstic circular trail was described to me as a beautiful path with rock formations and I should definitely go to the stone town. At first it only sounded normal, but on the spot it became a hiking paradise and I had a chance encounter that was supposed to put everything in the shade. When it comes to hiking in Bavaria, the karstic hiking trail should not be missing. Laces the shoes and loooooos &# 128521;
