What is the meaning of Santa Claus??
Historically, there are different gift offerers. There is Santa Claus, the Christ child and later Santa Claus. The traditions have different origins.
Saint Nicholas actually lived in the 4th century on what is now the Turkish Mediterranean coast. The Bishop of Myra is considered the patron saint of children and seafarers. The good deeds of the holy man were also the core of many legends. In memory of him, children have been given presents on his name day, December 6, since the Middle Ages.
The reformer Martin Luther supported the introduction of the Christ child as a gift giver. The reason was the rejection of the veneration of saints. Subsequently, gifts were given on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day. The tradition lives on in Germany to this day.
In the 19th century, Santa Claus took the stage. The model was probably Santa Claus. His representation in 1844 in the children‘s book Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffmann comes close to that of Santa Claus in later times. It is a fairy tale character. On the night of December 24-25, he travels from the North Pole to the children with his reindeer sleigh and brings the Christmas gifts. Since the Coca-Cola advertising campaign from the 1930s, Santa Claus has been known everywhere with his red and white outfit!
How should an actor look like??
First of all, he should know the meaning of Santa Claus. As already briefly explained, there are considerable differences between the donors. The old man from the North Pole is a well traveled, wise figure. Especially children’s eyes are very agile, critical and endeavor to unmask Santa as an actor in the neighborhood or even in the family. Although it is a fairy tale character – one should know the fairy tale.
Basics of knowledge are good there. This affects the most famous place of residence, the North Pole, as well as the means of transport used, the reindeer sleigh. Rudolph, the reindeer with the red nose, also belongs to the educational level. Questions about the sleigh ride through the air and the parking space on the roof cannot be avoided.
A thorough preparation for the appearance under the Christmas tree is therefore mandatory! Santa shouldn’t be playing Santa Claus either. Because this comes on December 6th. Singing and a deep voice is beneficial. However, on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, there are definitely no Santa Claus songs. Think of the manner of Hoffman von Fallersleben from 1835 "Santa Claus is coming tomorrow".
The overall appearance should be confident and calm. The call "HoHoHoHo" is recommended to practice!
What are the special features of the costume?
The appropriate outfit is also important for the overall appearance. Not only the costume, but also the accessories should be coherent. There is good advice here: Make a claim!
In many places you will encounter alleged Santa Clauses with sneakers, watches on your wrist, cheap cotton balls, cheap bathrobes and jeans! That would be called an unsuitable attempt. Some just want to get a quick job done with a purely monetary goal.
The equipment of Santa Claus with heart, mind and soul is different. It should be clean and well-kept. Here I recommend the checklist below:
- One or two-piece suit or coat in red color
- Black belt with buckle closure
- White gloves
- Leather boots or shoes with gaiters
- High quality wig and high quality beard
- Eyebrows to match the beard
- reading glasses
- Jutesack
- High quality bell
A golden chair and a bench are not essential. In any case, children look at clean gloves, beards and costumes!
Santa is supposed to be a role model!
