The port city on the northern shore of Lake Garda is a popular health resort, has about 14,000 inhabitants and wearing the nickname "the beautiful". Rightly so …
Thanks to a well-preserved, well-kept and traffic-free old town and a lively town center with beautiful houses, promenades, pretty boutiques and inviting bars and restaurants, a walk through Riva del Garda is always a pleasure.
The city can look back on a long and eventful history. The place was already known in ancient times when there was a Roman navigator school here. From the 11th century, all sorts of ruling families in northern Italy fought over the coveted port, which offered access to the Po Valley and thus to important trade connections.
In the 19th century, Riva del Garda finally rose to become a popular health resort frequented by numerous famous travelers, including Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Friedrich Nietzsche and Rainer Maria Rilke. To date, Riva del Garda has blossomed into a fine, consistently pleasant tourist center with a colorful cultural and sports program. The elegant spa guest is just as satisfied here as the sporty surfer or the extended family with different interests.
In the extensive bathing area with a wide pebble beach, the shady green areas or the promenades and parks, you can always find a cozy place to relax and unwind.
Those who appreciate the lake, water sports and sophisticated flair will be Riva del Garda love. Whether on the beach or in the mountainous hinterland, you can really enjoy the pleasant Mediterranean air here. And at the end of a nice day there is a leisurely stroll along the shore, a sparkling aperitif and dinner in one of the pretty restaurants.

Attractions in Riva del Garda
Piazza 3 Novembre
The beautiful square at the port also forms the center of the old town of Riva del Garda, around which some stately old buildings are grouped, including the Palazzo Pretorio, the Palazzo del Provveditore and the Palazzo Municipale.
Torre Apponale
At the eastern end of Piazza 3 Novembre, a more than 30 m high, defensive city tower rises, the foundations of which go back to the 14th century and which is now also the symbol of Riva del Garda. The old city wall is no longer preserved, but three mighty gates testify to the size of the former defense system.
Rocca – moated castle & museum
The fortress on the waterfront goes back to the rulers of the Scaligeri, who ruled Riva del Garda in the 12th century. Over the years, the castle was repeatedly rebuilt until the city museum with archeology, painting and science exhibits was finally housed here.
Chiesa dell’Inviolata
The octagonal sacral building in the old town is one of the main cultural attractions of Riva del Garda. The rather nondescript church was built in the 17th century by an unknown architect from Portugal. The baroque interior is extremely gorgeous and every corner is decorated with frescoes, paintings and stucco work.
Cascata Varone
A detour into the vicinity of Riva del Garda should lead to Varone, where a roaring waterfall rushes almost 100 m into the depths. You can watch the rushing natural spectacle from two visitor platforms that can be reached via paths and stairs.
