Home remedy for fever – What really helps?

Fever is a healthy, natural defence reaction of our body against infections and other diseases. In itself, fever is not harmful. However, it often leads to unwanted and unpleasant symptoms. We will show you which household remedies can alleviate the fever and counteract the unpleasant symptoms.

Fever is a natural reaction of our body that prevents the spread of viruses and bacteria and strengthens the immune system. Fever is therefore caused by another disease, often a flu-like infection. Fever in adults is basically divided into three categories. Between 38.1 °C and 38.5 °C we speak of a mild fever. When the body temperature reaches 38.6 °C, it is already a moderate fever, which already leads to unpleasant symptoms. Above 39.0 °C one speaks of a high fever. Above this temperature, the fever in adults should be actively reduced. The reason for this is that it can become very dangerous from 40°C. In babies and children, however, fever should be treated immediately, otherwise complications may occur.

If fever is too high, you should try to lower it. Here you can find out which household remedies work against fever.

calf compress

Cold calf compresses are one of the most proven household remedies for fever. Simply dip two towels in lukewarm water and wrap them around your calves. It is best to wrap a dry towel over them. Wait about 20 minutes before removing the compresses. Even after this short period, the fever can drop as low as 0.5 °C. The fever can then be reduced to a minimum. This procedure can be repeated several times a day. The great advantage of this household remedy is that it is easy to use for both children and adults. In addition, unlike some medications, there are usually no side effects.

vinegar stocking

The so-called vinegar stocking is a good alternative to the calf compress. For this, two long cotton stockings are placed in a vinegar-water mixture (mixture: one part apple vinegar, five parts water). The stockings must then be put on. You should ideally pull dry socks over them. Let it work for about an hour, preferably lying down. Only a third of the time is needed for children. The vinegar stockings should also significantly reduce the fever. If you do not notice any change, you can repeat the procedure after a short wait.


Washing with a washcloth can also be effective against fever. Dip a washcloth into lukewarm water and rub the body from the outside inwards (e.g. from the fingers to the chest). You should also work your way from top to bottom. In order to reach the back, it is advisable to get a helper. The wet parts of the body should be wrapped in towels and you should rest for at least 30 minutes afterwards.

In addition to external treatments, there are also some home remedies that you can drink or take.


Garlic relieves fever because it promotes sweating and toxins leave the body more quickly. It also helps to counteract infections. The best way to take it is to chop a clove of garlic into small pieces, let it steep in hot water for several minutes and then strain it. Then drink the garlic water slowly, preferably twice a day.


Peppermint tea can also work to lower fever. For this, it is best to make the tea yourself with fresh mint leaves and some honey. It is best to drink the whole thing several times a day in order to achieve the best possible result.


Ginger promotes blood circulation, has an antibacterial effect and is therefore ideal for fighting fever. Ginger can be taken in salads, soups or tea. To make a ginger tea, simply add half a teaspoon of grated ginger to hot water, leave to steep for 5-10 minutes and mix with some honey.

Basil & Parsley

These two herbs are true miracle cures when it comes to fever, because they have healing properties and often act like antibiotics. To take them, it is best to boil basil in hot water or to brew chopped coriander in hot water to make a tea. This can also be supplemented with ginger and honey.

In fever, the right diet is also very important to support the body in its recovery. You should eat foods rich in protein (e.g. chicken broth) and vitamins (as well as citrus fruits). These give the body the necessary energy and important vitamins. Fruit is also always a good choice if you have a fever. Especially if you have a high fever, you should not forget to drink because you dehydrate much faster. For each additional degree of body temperature, the body needs about one extra litre of water. Therefore you should drink at least one glass of water every hour. Nutrient-rich juices or soups can also help the body to recover.

Home remedies against fever may not always be effective. If your fever is very high (approx. 40°C), you should consult a doctor as a precaution. This also applies if high fever does not drop within 48 hours. Other reasons to check up are severe symptoms, purulent sputum, diarrhea, etc.
