Hormone spiral – jaydess the small hormone spiral

JAYDESS® – the small, light hormone spiral

Most young women use contraception or a pill. In everyday stress, however, the pill is sometimes forgotten and when using the condom, unpleasant breakdowns can occur in the storm of passion. Experience has shown that both are risks for the development of an unwanted pregnancy. The knowledge that young women and women who have not yet given birth to a child can still use a spiral is not yet widespread. Recently there has been a new hormone spiral that has been specially developed for these target groups.

With this small hormone spiral, young women now have a long-term method available that is very effective over a period of 3 years with low hormone doses.

How does Jaydess® work?

The “hormone spiral” Jaydess® is an effective method of preventing unwanted pregnancies. It combines the advantages of an estrogen-free pill (weaker, pain-free menstrual period; no estrogen-related side effects) with those of the conventional (copper) spiral (safe effect directly in the uterus for several years) and is therefore a convenient and safe method of long-term contraception.

The hormone spiral is a small, soft, T-shaped plastic body. The T-bars are flexible and enable the specialist to insert them into the uterus with little pain – at the same time they ensure a good hold in the uterus.

There is a plastic cover on the longitudinal leg. This is the storage place of the active ingredient of the hormone spiral, the yellow body hormone "Levonorgestrel". Levonorgestrel has been used in well-tolerated pills for many years. After inserting Jaydess®, the hormone spiral slowly and evenly releases levonorgestrel in very small amounts directly into the endometrium.

At the lower end of the hormone spiral there is an eyelet to which two control threads are attached. These threads can be felt by yourself and enable the specialist to easily remove the hormone spiral.

Jaydess® offers extremely reliable contraception for 3 years without the need to use a contraceptive daily / weekly / monthly.

The daily hormone dose directly in the uterus is 13.5 micrograms levonorgestrel in 24 hours and is therefore much lower than when taking the pill, since the pill does not act locally, but the hormones must first take their way through the metabolism or the bloodstream before they can develop their effectiveness.

The hormone spiral is effective three times from day one:

  • by thickening the natural mucus in the cervix under the influence of the hormone levonorgestrel (= safe barrier) so that sperm cannot rise into the uterus to fertilize an egg. This mucus plug is hardly penetrable even for rising germs and bacteria and thus offers a certain protection against infections.
  • by reducing the uterine lining and keeping it low, which is why the menstrual period under the hormone spiral is much shorter and easier. The uterine lining is not built up monthly for the implantation of a fertilized egg. This is why some women no longer have bleeding under the hormone spiral.
  • by inhibiting the function and motility of sperm that still get into the uterus by the released hormone levonorgestrel.

All of these pregnancy-preventing effects are not more detectable as soon as the hormone spiral is removed. Women can get pregnant again in the first cycle after removal.

The advantages of Jaydess®

Women expect optimal contraception to be safe, easy to use and well tolerated. For young women with small wombs and women who have not yet given birth, the Jaydess® hormone coil offers several advantages due to its smaller size:

Certainly effective. The hormone spiral offers very safe protection against unwanted pregnancy with minimal local hormone dosing. The high effectiveness is independent of age and weight the woman. There are no application errors such as "forgotten", "thinking too late about contraception" – vomiting, diarrhea or travel delays have no influence on the effectiveness of Jaydess®.

Estrogen-free contraception. The hormone spiral contains only one hormone, the gestagen levonorgestrel. This is also suitable for women who have an increased risk of thrombosis.

Low dose. The hormone levels that can be measured in the blood are many times lower than when taking a pill and there are few tolerability problems. The systemic detection of hormones compared to the hormone spiral Mirena® is reduced by up to 50%.

Painless laying. Due to the small size, the spiral can be placed easily and with little pain.

Comfortable and not noticeable. Sexuality can be lived with the hormone spiral free of thoughts of possible undesirable consequences and free of unpleasant interruptions. After laying Jaydess®, women no longer need to think about contraception for 3 years.

Visible on ultrasound. Thanks to the silver ring inside the plastic shaft, the specialist can see Jaydess® well on ultrasound and distinguish it from other spirals.

Removable at any time. For young women who only want to use very effective contraception for a limited period of time, but would like to fulfill a desire to have children in the near future, the hormone spiral offers the advantage that it can be removed at any time and a pregnancy can occur immediately afterwards.

Applicable during breastfeeding. Since the hormone spiral contains only one corpus luteum, it can also be used during breastfeeding. This does not affect the quality and amount of breast milk.

More quality of life. Many women find it pleasant if they also have other additional benefits through a contraceptive. The hormone spiral causes shorter and weaker menstrual periods. This usually also reduces pain medication consumption. Many women do not find it disturbing if the menstrual period does not occur, provided that You know, that this is completely medically harmless.

Possible disadvantages of Jaydess®

The hormone spiral Jaydess® is a hormonal contraceptive and, like the pill, unwanted side effects can also occur. The side effects are usually less than when taking pills, because the hormone spiral releases only a very small dose of the hormone levonorgestrel directly into the uterus. That is why Jaydess® is also suitable for women who have suffered from various side effects (e.g. weight gain) when taking the pill.

What may happen after a hormone coil is placed?

Out of 100 women with Jaydess hormone coil:

  • … up to 6 women can eject the spiral again after laying. Increased bleeding can be an indication of this: In 94 out of 100 women, the spiral remains securely in the uterus until it is properly pulled again by the doctor.
  • … Depressive moods, migraines, nausea, hair loss or chest pain can occur in 1-10 women. 90/99 women in 100 do not experience these symptoms.
  • … headache or abdominal pain, changes in bleeding and blemished skin can occur in around 10 women. If young women have also taken the pill as a remedy for acne or blemishes and then switch to a hormone spiral, the complexion may deteriorate. At 90 These symptoms do not occur in 100 women.
  • … Ovarian cysts can occur in 13 women. Ovarian cysts do not occur in 87 out of 100 women. Because the preventive effect of Jaydess® is mainly due to local effects in the uterus, ovulation in women with a hormone spiral is generally unchanged, including that normal egg vesicle development in the ovary. Sometimes the re-formation of the ovules in the ovary is delayed and the maturation period continues. Such enlarged egg follicles have been reported as a side effect in approximately 13% of women using Jaydess®, including other ovarian cysts. Most often, cysts do not cause discomfort, but in some cases they can be accompanied by abdominal pain. In most cases, the enlarged egg vesicles recede on their own within two to three months, and ectopic pregnancies, inflammation and injuries in the pelvic area are extremely rare.

The safety and effectiveness of Jaydess®

Hormone spirals are among the most reliable methods of contraception available today.

  • out of 1,000 women who use the Jaydess® hormone coil for one year 4 pregnant.
  • out of 1,000 women who use the Mirena® hormone spiral for one year 2 pregnant.
  • out of 1000 women who are sterilized become within one year 5 pregnant.
  • out of 1,000 women who use the copper spiral for one year 8 pregnant.
  • out of 1,000 women who use birth control pills for one year 90 pregnant.
  • out of 1000 women / couples who use a condom for one year 180 pregnant.

In Austria, over 200,000 women use a hormone spiral – and the trend is rising. Some women have already had a second or third spiral placed after removing their first hormone spiral in order to effectively prevent them over a very long period of time. Around 12 million women worldwide have had experience with the hormone spiral.

Laying, checking and removing Jaydess®

After a gynecological examination and consultation, the gynecologist can place the hormone spiral. This usually happens at the beginning of a menstrual period, when the cervix is slightly open. Taking an analgesic and a prostaglandin tablet one hour before the small procedure optimally prepares the cervix and enables painless placement. The spiral is inserted into the uterus through the vagina using a thin tube. After laying, the return threads are shortened. These should remain palpable for the woman to check, but should not disturb the partner during traffic. A check-up by the doctor is recommended after 4-6 weeks – later an annual gynecological check as part of the routine examination is sufficient. After three years, the spiral must be removed – this can be done regardless of a menstrual period. If further contraception is required, a new spiral can be placed immediately.

The cost of the small hormone spiral

The hormone coil Jaydess® offers safe contraception for 3 years at a price of approx. € 500.-. The costs are to be borne in Austria. The health insurance companies do not grant a subsidy or reimbursement of costs. Even if this seems expensive at first glance, it is worth converting – because over a period of 3 years the costs for the hormone spiral are € 13.80 per month and are therefore cheaper than, for example, the costs of the contraceptive ring or the contraceptive patch. In addition, due to the easier monthly bleeding, money for monthly hygiene such as tampons or sanitary napkins may also be saved.

The information is based on scientific facts and the authors’ many years of experience in contraception advice. They should help women to protect themselves against unwanted pregnancies and thus against abortions with very effective contraception.
