During the summer holidays we spent a week on the island of Usedom for family holidays. We saw, experienced and tried a lot on Usedom. In this article I would like to give you inspirations and tips for trips with children and family and have compiled my favourite sights for you.

Excursions on Usedom: Sea animal fishing trip with a cutter

With the cutter “Palucca” it goes from Bansin, Heringsdorf or Ahlbeck to a one-hour fishing trip on the Baltic Sea. Small fish, mussels, snails, crabs and other marine animals are towed on board with a trawl net. The marine animals land in a basin around which the children curiously gather and are then examined together. The children also learn something about fishing and the living creatures in the Baltic Sea.

Apart from that, language games and hiking games turn every supposedly boring walk into a fun undertaking. Brothers Grimm, German Brüder Grimm, German folklorists and linguists best known for their Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812–22; also called Grimm’s Fairy Tales), which led to the birth of the modern study of folklore. Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (b. January 4, 1785, Hanau, Hesse-Kassel [Germany]—d. September 20, 1863, Berlin) and Wilhelm Carl Grimm (b. February 24, 1786, Hanau, Hesse-Kassel [Germany]—d. December 16, 1859, Berlin) together compiled other collections of folk music and folk literature, and Jacob in particular did important work in historical linguistics and Germanic philology, which included the formulation of Grimm’s law. They were among the most important German scholars of their time.

    Every writer has an iconography, most authors are young and old, Michael Ende only exists once: as a friendly looking intoxicating beard, more fairytale uncles than magicians. The very young, rapturously beautiful acting student Michael Ende doesn’t even exist in the public consciousness, and the shooting star of German post-war literature for children probably only knows who was there when locomotive driver was still a dream job.

    This is the Michael end of the “Jim Knopf”, in the pre-cultural revolutionary uniform of the economic miracle: tie and suit and bird’s eye glasses. Almost all parents feel more connected to a child in different phases of the family history. Some dads, who are afraid to wrap a baby, fall head over heels in love with their four-year-old daughter. And then retreat when the childlike, uninhibited twelve-year-old suddenly matures into female beauty. Different feelings and different treatment of the children are completely normal, natural and appropriate – who would talk to a one-year-old like an eleven-year-old?
