Running children’s noses are not uncommon in the winter months. What you can do so that this does not always lead to a long-lasting infection is revealed by the jameda health editorial team in this health tip.

The immune system

At the beginning of life, infants are protected from many pathogens by mother antibodies that are transmitted through the blood and breast milk. Even the intestines of newborns are only colonized by bacteria from the maternal vaginal flora at birth.

The children’s immune system then develops further by coming into contact with foreign germs. In this “learning process”, flu infections and childhood illnesses do not fail to appear – 8-10 infections per year are considered normal for small children. Especially in the daycare and kindergarten, the little ones get infected very easily because they play closely together and germs can also be passed on via toys.

For a strong immune system for the little ones

1. Medicinal plants

Coneflower (Echinacea) and geranium root are medicinal plants that strengthen the immune system. Children can take them as juice or drops. Depending on the finished product, the preparations are approved for children from 1 year with geranium roots and 2 or 4 or 6 years with coneflowers. Elderberry juice is also good for defense, it contains a lot of vitamin V and phytochemicals.

2. Schuessler salts

Biochemistry according to Dr. For children who often suffer from infections, Schüßler recommends a cure from No. 3 Ferrum phosphoricum, then No. 7 Magnesium phosphoricum and finally No. 6 Potassium sulfuricum for 2-4 weeks each. If children are weak and pale for a long time after an infection, No. 2 Calcium phosphoricum, No. 3 Ferrum phosporicum and No. 11 Silicea are used in combination. With weak intestinal flora, e.g. after taking antibiotics, No. 3 Ferrum phosphoricum is recommended.

3. Homeopathic globules

Depending on other symptoms, the individual remedies Echinacea, Calcium carbonicum, Ferrum phosphoricum, Kalium iodatum, Pulsatilla, Silicea or Thuja are recommended in homeopathy. Parents can also use ready-made products that contain combinations of different single agents.

4. Gut bacteria

A lot of exercise is good for the immune system! (© sonyae_) Gut bacteria are an important part of the immune system. Are they weakened, e.g. due to an intestinal colonization or taking antibiotics, you can rebuild them with preparations with probiotic germs such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli.

5. Fresh air and exercise

A varied diet with lots of fruits and vegetables provides the children with all the important nutrients. Regular exercise in the fresh air and adequate sleep also strengthen the immune system. Children should also not be exposed to cigarette smoke!

Which indicates an immune deficiency?

Repeated severe infections such as pneumonia or sinus infections, otitis media, as well as local and systemic bacterial infections, frequent diarrhea, growth disorders, relapses and long regeneration times can be signs of immunodeficiency in children.

The little ones are then closely looked after by the pediatrician. The therapy depends on the type of defect, e.g. Defense bodies are given regularly or antibiotics and antifungals are given preventively – this way, a healthy immune system can be built up through stem cell transmission.
