Inlay – overview of costs and variants

What does an inlay cost??

Despite good oral hygiene, tooth decay or accidents can damage the tooth. Due to the harmful effects of amalgam fillings, some opt for an inlay instead.

For a ceramic inlay you have to calculate costs between 250 and 600 euros, for a gold inlay between 300 and 700 euros.

Different inlays – different costs

The majority of the inlays used are ceramic or gold inlays, less often plastics or titanium are used. Before going into the most important variants and materials, here is a short price comparison.

Cost of different inlay types

Type of inlay costs
Ceramic inlay 250, – to 600, – euros
Gold inlay 300 to 700 euros
Galvano inlay 300 to 700 euros
(Ceramic) plastic inlay 30 to 160 euros
Cerec inlay 350 to 600 euros

All prices are rough guidelines including VAT and can of course vary.

The cost of the inlay is limited three main factors together:

  • Dental costs (examination, preparation, insertion, etc.)
  • Laboratory costs (manufacture of the prosthesis)
  • material costs

The cost of the dental service is calculated using the GOZ (fee schedule for dentists). The material costs for a gold inlay depend on the current price of the metal. About 1 to 4 grams of gold are required for an inlay.

The shape of the prosthesis has a decisive impact on the price. A distinction is made according to the number of surfaces: single-surface inlays only lie in the occlusal surface of the tooth, if the inlay has two or more surfaces, this means that the prosthesis is also in contact with one or more neighboring teeth or affects an outer surface of the tooth.

Overview of various cost factors for the inlay

Overview of different inlay types

Gold inlay

The gold inlay is generally considered to be the most resistant and durable inlay type. To rule out deformation due to the softness of the metal, it is actually a gold alloy. Among other things, platinum and silver are added. A major shortcoming is the aesthetic factor. Therefore, it is mostly used only in areas where it is not visible.

Ceramic inlay

As the name suggests, the ceramic inlay is made from an unbreakable ceramic mixture, the color of which is adapted to the color of the tooth. The biggest advantages compared to the gold inlay are the coloring and the stabilization of the remaining tooth structure.

Galvano inlay

The galvano inlay is a mixture of gold and ceramic inlay. The advantages of both methods are combined here with a core made of a gold alloy and a coating made of ceramic. The resilience of gold meets the aesthetics of ceramics.

(Ceramic) plastic inlay

This method is rarely used because the material is not particularly robust. Ceramics are sometimes added to improve durability.

Cerec inlay

The biggest difference here is not in the material but in the manufacturing method. The gap in the tooth is measured by machine and the required prosthesis is immediately milled out of a ceramic block.

The advantage over the conventional method is that usually only one session with the doctor is necessary. However, the inlays are often not as precise as those made by hand.

How to get your inlay

At the beginning you will find out in a consultation with your dentist whether an inlay is necessary at all and which method is most suitable for you. A filling may be sufficient for minor damage, but a crown may also be required for larger ones.

The onlay and overlay are similar to the inlay. In the latter, the prosthesis rests on the bumps of the teeth. As a rule, inlays are only made for molars. If the canines and incisors are damaged, veneers are used, for example.

Once all the formalities have been clarified, the dentist first removes the caries. The tooth is then milled so that the prosthesis can be inserted well. A wax impression is made of the resulting gap.

Then it is sealed with a provisional until the next session. Your values are forwarded to a laboratory, where your inlay is made by professional dental technicians.

The inlay is then used in the second session at the dentist’s. For this (with the ceramic inlay), the tooth substance is slightly etched, or special glue or cement is used. Before the glue cures, fine edges and bumps are corrected.

Financing the inlay

As mentioned at the beginning, the statutory health insurance companies only support the treatment with a small amount. If regular prophylaxis can be demonstrated, the grant may increase.

Some private health insurances cover the costs completely, others only partially. The situation is similar with dental supplement insurance. Some dental practices allow payment in installments.

Overview of frequently asked questions

How long do inlays last?

Gold inlays usually have a lifespan of more than twenty years. Ceramic inlays can also be used over a long period of time – from 10 to 30 years – without complications. In many patients, the prostheses last a lifetime.

What complications can arise?

Complications are relatively rare. It may happen that the material can damage neighboring teeth or the remaining tooth structure. If the caries is not removed properly and completely before the procedure, it can form under the prosthesis or neighboring regions, so that it must be removed again.

What to do if the inlay is damaged? There is guarantee?

As a rule, you have a two-year guarantee on your inlay. If complications occur during this time, your dentist is obliged to treat them free of charge. If repairs occur afterwards, you have to pay yourself.
