In October 2014, the newly founded Institute for Pediatric Radiology at St. Josef Hospital in Bochum started operating. So that exists now the Possibility to offer the entire spectrum of pediatric imaging diagnostics on a university level with pediatric radiology expertise in an outpatient setting and in a child-friendly atmosphere. The institute looks after the inpatients of the Bochum University Children’s Hospital and is also a competent contact for the resident colleagues and a contact point for outpatient pediatric patients.

Priv.-Doz is head of the Institute of Pediatric Radiology. Dr. med. Christoph M. Heyer, a specialist in diagnostic radiology with a focus on pediatric radiology and a specialist in pediatrics, who will work in the radiology practice at MVZ JosefCarrée, where he will mainly perform MRI, CT and X-ray examinations. Dr. med. Leo Rossler, specialist in pediatrics with a focus on pediatric cardiology and neonatology, is responsible for sonography, echocardiography and conventional X-ray diagnostics within the institute at the university children’s clinic.

All radiographs in children, both in the rooms of the university children’s clinic and in the MVZ Radiologie in JosefCarrée, modern digital radiography devices with powerful flat detectors are used, which guarantee excellent image quality with a minimal radiation dose.

ultrasounds are carried out in the University Children’s Clinic and in the Department of Neonatology at St. Elisabeth Hospital. Sonography focuses on the presentation of the organs of newborns and infants, in abdominal diagnostics, especially in the assessment of the kidneys and urinary tract, in vascular diseases and in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, Dr. Rossler performs echocardiographic examinations in the initial diagnosis or in the course of progress assessments of pediatric cardiological clinical pictures.

The Computed tomography (CT) is a radiation-intensive X-ray procedure, which is used in childhood especially in neurological and traumatological emergencies and in the diagnosis of lung diseases. In our institute, all CT examinations are carried out on a multi-line scanner of the latest design and all technical options for reducing the radiation dose are used. Should with a CT-investigation the administration of contrast agents may be necessary, we apply well-tolerated, non-ionic substances with a very low rate of side effects. A blood sample must usually be taken in advance in order to rule out a kidney or thyroid dysfunction.

All MRI scans are carried out in the Institute for Pediatric Radiology on a modern 1.5 Tesla scanner. The device offers special sequences that reduce movement artifacts and thus achieve good results, especially for small, restless children. With all examinations of children, the presence of a parent in the examination room is possible. For many little patients, it is possible, Reduce fears and significantly reduce the need for sedative medication. In addition, our institute has its own waiting room for children, in which the small patients can be prepared for the examination in a child-friendly atmosphere. All appointments are made in consultation with the parents in order to achieve the best possible adaptation to the child’s rhythm of sleep. In individual cases, the MRI examinations are supplemented by the intravenous administration of contrast media.
