Disease of the temporomandibular joint

Diseases of the temporomandibular joints and the masticatory muscles could have many causes. The pain is often caused by the malfunction of the temporomandibular joint. In this case one speaks of a craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) called.

Which 2 bones form the temporomandibular joint?

The 2 bones that make up the temporomandibular joint are the temporal bone and the lower jaw. The articular bone components of the temporomandibular joint are the lower jawbone of the temporal bone and the head of the lower jaw.

CMD jaw – What are the symptoms of CMD??

Teeth grinding / pressing, chronic headaches, migraines, muscle aches, TMJ and neck pain or TMJ cracking (pops) – all of these symptoms may have a common cause: the over activity of the jaw muscles.

Unconscious teeth presses involve some of the strongest muscles in the human body. Like most muscles in our body, the jaw muscles experience an unusual amount of intense tension for which they are not designed, more sensitivity and even pain. We almost always grind and crush our teeth while we sleep. However, regular teeth have been found to produce between 6 and 20 times as much strength as people who only occasionally do because their jaw muscles are exercised differently.

Pain in the TMJ – What is a CMD?

CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction) is a malfunction of the upper and lower jaw, which can be caused by dysfunctions on the teeth, as well as the temporomandibular joint and the musculature along the spine to the pelvis.

Since there is a functional connection between the jaw and head joints and the pelvis, a disturbance in one of these functional areas triggers an interaction in the other areas – e.g. Pelvic obliquity also causes a TMJ disorder and vice versa.

The treatment of CMD with a splint is the “icing on the cake” in creating the harmony of the head for total body posture. The functional treatment of chronic muscle dysfunction with its effects is conceivable and possible across disciplines and only in collaboration with your orthopedist, physiotherapist, psychosomatist or osteopathic / manual therapist.

The referral must be made by the family doctor. Further malfunctions can only be found and corrected in this way. With a sole rail treatment, it is not always done. Please, after the splint treatment, present any remaining symptoms to the orthopedist. If necessary, the latter may initiate cooperation with the other specialist areas.

How is a CMD temporomandibular joint disease treated?

Dr. med. Meusel has successfully treated patients with CMD for many years and has received numerous training and additional qualifications in this field.
She works according to the rail concepts of Reiner Schöttl. D.D.S. (USA) and Dr. med. med. Kai Bähnemann.

In the variety of ways to influence the musculature and its interaction with the jaw-head and posture, e.g. Aqualizer (made-to-measure temporary bite aids) used. Another painless and non-invasive method of therapeutic, electrical stimulation of tense muscles, via a so-called transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), using a special stimulation clamp (according to Dr. Seidel) at special points of reflection, osteopathy or manual therapy.

If the relaxation method is successful, functional rails will be mentioned. These stabilize the resulting situation. Depending on the severity of the symptoms and the symptoms, costs are incurred. This discusses Dr. med. Get in touch with us before you have to make a definitive functional splint.

These diagnostic and therapeutic measures are usually not taken over by the statutory health insurance.

TMJ – which doctor should I go to and how does CMD therapy work??

Miss Dr. med. dent. Meusel is our specialist in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disease. It recommends the integration of a bite splint according to the dental and orthopedic aspects (temporomandibular reduction splint). In our practice, orthopedic criteria were used to provisionally provoke an improved lower jaw position with the help of cotton rolls or aqualizers, which has a positive effect on the musculoskeletal system. At the time of treatment, we will shape your upper and lower jaw.

It will then be adapted to fit a removable removable hard plastic splint over the entire lower arch. In certain situations, a soft splint (Myocepter) may be necessary first. The bite splint also leaves sufficient space for the tongue so that, as a rule, speech can be spoken almost without change.

The position of the lower jaw may be relatively different from your habitual, for example, the posterior teeth can be locked by several millimeters, the lower jaw moved a little further forward. It will then within a very short time a new rest position (myocentricity) set, which contributes to the relaxation of the same. For the effective application of the splint, it is necessary that the splint is worn day and night in the initial phase.

In addition to the treatment of the muscles, a physical therapy is necessary, which can be done with chiropractic-osteopathic techniques, physiotherapeutic-manual-therapeutic techniques or acupuncture. The function of the rail must be checked at regular intervals. Your dentist will order you this at regular intervals. Please pay attention to the adherence to the dates.

Too strong compression of the teeth is thus impossible, the jaw musculature remains permanently relaxed and relieved and the old (pathological) bite pattern is resolved. Waking up headaches, neck pain and sensitive jaws and other symptoms are gradually reduced.

When do I have to wear the therapeutic track??

It is recommended to eat snacks such as yoghurt, banana, soup etc. by rail. Keep your posture straight and clean your splint daily. The pre-planned wearing time is at least 9 months. During this time, your symptoms should decrease or even disappear completely. Please wear the bite splint in special stressful situations (occupational stress etc.) during the day and for relaxation at night.

We wish you an improvement of the symptoms and for any questions we are at your disposal!
