A CONVERSATION WITH THE CURRENT COMMUNICATION BOARD GIVES INSIGHT IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE OF THE KINDERGARTENS AND THE USE OF THE PARENTS.
THE KINDERGARTEN HAS BEEN SINCE 1994 AND IT WAS THE FIRST GERMAN-SPANISH PARENT INITIATIVE IN MUNICH. HOW HAS IT CAME TO THE NAME MARIPOSA?
To anticipate it, we are very proud that we have been around for so long. Some former children are now students or are in the middle of their careers. But back to your question: We found the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly figuratively a great interpretation for the development of our children from toddlers to school children.
That sounds really great. AND HOW CAN A GERMAN-SPANISH PARENT INITIATIVE BE DESCRIBED? WHAT CAN I IMAGINE?
First of all, everyone is welcome with us! Nice is natural if there is a connection to the Spanish or Latin American language and culture. For us, German-Spanish also means that we have a diverse team of Spanish, Latin American and German educators and children. We want to bring children closer to the whole diversity of our multicultural world, including not only language, but also customs, festivals and national customs.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PARENT INITIATIVE??
Honestly: a lot of work. As you said, we are a parenting initiative. This means that the cooperation of all parents is important for the smooth running of everyday kindergarten life. A committee is assigned to all parents upon entry. However, you also have the opportunity to express wishes, for example if you are a great gardener or can handle numbers well.
PUH, THAT TAKES A LONG TIME AND LIKE A GIANT RESPONSIBILITY, OR?
Yes, it is, but it has the advantage that the parents can help shape and decide. Above all, the board of directors has a great responsibility, which is why we have divided the board of directors over five shoulders: there is one board of management for finance, human resources, communication, joining and leaving, and committees.
YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DETACHED HOUSE WITH GARDEN, HOW MUCH SPACE IS AVAILABLE FOR THE CHILDREN?
The 42 children have around 320 square meters in the house on three floors. So there is plenty of space. And in the 300 square meter sunny garden with sandpit, house, slide and climbing facility are beautiful old trees. WHERE ARE WE
YOU SAY YOU HAVE 42 CHILDREN, HOW IS THE SUPPORT KEY?
It is very good with us, it is also important to us and we see our great advantage there. In the kindergarten, eight children are looked after by an educator. In the crèche there are only 5 children per teacher. So a much better care key than in the city facilities. In addition, we have two jumpers who support the educators in the different groups as needed and a mini jobber. I forgot to mention that Angie, our music teacher, is also part of our team of educators. She comes once a week and teaches our children early musical education, which is also recognized by the Munich Music School. To sum up again: We have ten permanent educators, a music teacher, and a mini-jobber for our children. THE TEAM
THAT REALLY LOOKS GOOD. With such a care key, the children are properly looked after! And what about the physical well-being of the children? IS THERE A SPECIAL NUTRITIONAL CONCEPT??
Of course, the well-being of the children is always in the foreground. That is why we only use organic products. We are freshly supplied by the eco box every day. The good soul is our cook Andrea, a former Mariposa mom who prepares breakfast, lunch and snacks for our children every day.
A OWN CHEF FOR THE CHILDREN. THAT’S GREAT! ANOTHER IMPORTANT TOPIC FOR THE PARENTS ARE THE OPENING HOURS.
The kindergarten and crèche are open from Monday to Friday, with the kindergarten from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the crèche (for children from 1 year) open from 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. The children then go to kindergarten from the month they turn 3 years old.
THIS IS REALLY A LARGE PERIOD OF OPENING HOURS. THEREFORE NATURALLY THE QUESTION OF COSTS.
Since September 2019, the same fees apply in Mariposa as in the city of Munich. For the kindergarten (from 3 years) there are no childcare costs, only the monthly € 140 meal allowance. At the crèche e.g. for childcare from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. costs of 111, – euros and for childcare until 5:00 p.m. costs of 145, – euros, each plus meal allowance of currently 140, – euros per month. In addition, discounts for siblings and on the basis of their own income are possible. FACTS AND FIGURES

A CONVERSATION WITH ROSI, THE KINDERGARTEN LEADER, GIVES INSIGHT INTO THE DAILY WORK WITH THE CHILDREN.
HOW DID MARIPOSA FOUND AND HOW DID YOU GET TO KINDERGARTEN?
The idea originally came from three bilingual families (German / Spanish). They came together to set up a daycare center with a limited number of children, to ensure more personal care and because the children should keep Spanish as a second language. At the beginning they only had one educator. I joined at the time when I wanted to learn German at the Goethe Institute and everyone told me what he was doing at the introductory round and I said that I was a kindergarten teacher. A Chilean spoke to me after the hour and told me that his wife was looking for someone to open a crèche with ten children and I should definitely introduce myself. I was lucky to like them well and this was instantly mutual. That’s how I started and we looked after up to ten children who are now around 24 years old and with whom we meet again and again and see each other on birthdays and appointments.
HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT THE BILINGUAL CONCEPT AT MARIPOSA?
Mariposa follows the concept: bilingual education contributes to the future-oriented development of our children in a Europe of open doors. Which is obviously becoming more and more important. All educators are bilingual and one of them only speaks German with the children. With Angie, our music teacher, the children get to know German culture better through music. We also celebrate the Oktoberfest “in the children’s version”, St. Martin, Nikolaus, Christmas, Easter, Mardi Gras, etc. One language, one caregiver. We try to ensure that the children do not mix the languages and that they know who they can speak German with and with whom they can speak Spanish.
WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF YOUR WORK? EDUCATIONAL CONCEPT
The language is our focus. The children should learn both languages in a fun way, i.e. learn playfully. We promote the learning process of both languages through various activities, such as B. Music, painting, theater, handicrafts, excursions, etc. By playing children get to know other children from different cultures and learn to understand each other with the same language. We create stories, letters, actively research with all senses: You can learn more about this by reading through our educational concept. There we also explain how the educators prepare and train themselves, our approaches, urban supervision and much more. We maintain many traditions here in kindergarten, not only the German, but also Latin American and European / Spanish through the language.
How is a typical daily routine?
We warmly welcome and welcome the children with an inviting and cozy morning circle, we have breakfast together and then split up into our groups to work on what is planned for the day. Maybe an excursion, painting, theater, handicrafts, reading a fairy tale,. Outside in the garden everyone is playing together, crib children have their own separate garden section, then we go to wash our hands, have lunch, rest or sleep and go home after the afternoon program (daily changing workshops).
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT MARIPOSA?
It is difficult to highlight just one thing. We have small groups with two main educators, including educators who have been working together for many years, a care key that is second to none. We have finally been able to add an educator to our Mariposa family since this year. Yes, that’s special. We are a family and the children feel it. We have our great parties: mini Olympics, summer parties, Christmas parties, where the children always have wonderful performances for parents and family members. We also have our own cook. The children eat very well and balanced, always fresh dishes. We already mentioned Angie, the music teacher, she is also very special. It is also important to know, that parents can directly influence the upbringing of children. That’s the great thing about a parenting initiative. Not in all kindergartens, parents can participate in the activities as much as we do.
WHY WOULD YOU SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS KINDERGARTEN??
Because you treat the children with respect, very warmly and lovingly, which is the most important thing for me and also because of the language, which is essential. There is a very family atmosphere and a feeling among each other that helps to convey the values that we want to bring to the children. Always considering a high academic and cultural level.
DEAR ROSI, THANK YOU FOR THE TALK!
