Kita: project work with school children

School children in your daycare center or in your day care center are particularly enthusiastic about projects. Read here how project work with school children is guaranteed to succeed and how they can be used in the long term for various projects motivate.

Learn at a high level

As a rule, it is not necessary to motivate the children to work on the project. Unlike individual offers, a project often attracts schoolchildren of their own accord. In contrast to school learning, schoolchildren themselves determine the course of the project. This means that the children always have the opportunity to vote on the further course and priorities of the project. As a result, a project often takes an unexpected turn, but it guarantees that the curiosity and motivation of the schoolchildren is always preserved because the children determine the content themselves.

The role of the educator

The educator gives suggestions and moderates the project. He is always available to support the children when it comes to new inputs and the acquisition of knowledge about the project. The schoolchildren project should be accompanied by at least 2 educators. Many projects have to be prepared and post-processed. An educator would be overwhelmed in terms of time to prepare the project.

3 requirements that define project work

Not every offer that is carried out in your daycare can be called a project. Different requirements apply to project work. You can only speak of project work if 3 requirements are met.

1. Orientation to the child’s living environment

The children should always be the focus of the project work. Their background of experience, knowledge, skills, competencies and potential play the central role in every project. The children must be able to influence the content of the project and its progress at all times.

Important NOTE! A sports airport opens near the daycare center. The children vote and choose "Flying" as a new project topic. First of all, the children deal with the question: Why does an airplane fly??

2. Child-friendly further development

The children should organize the further development of the project themselves with the support of the educator. This is called self-organized learning in the project.

Children need as much time and space as possible during the project work so that discussions about the project can take place. This works best in small groups, in which the children have the opportunity to work on the project independently and cooperatively shape and to express their wishes and ideas.

This is how particularly high-quality learning happens: The children learn in the project through experience. They always discover new things, try them out and control their own learning themselves. In addition, the children expand their communicative skills, as the course and the project progress are discussed again and again. A children’s conference is best suited for this.

3. Sustainability of the project

The project should be sustainable. This means that the children who took part in the project can still access and apply the knowledge they have acquired after the project has ended.

For each project, show the children how they can develop knowledge themselves. The following questions help the children in the long term:

  • Where can we look??
  • Who do we ask??
  • What materials do we need?
  • Where do we get this from?

Make sure that you choose the project start with special care. This increases and decreases the interest in and acceptance of the children for the project.
