No set criteria for green electricity

Electricity is commonly referred to as green electricity when it is (proportionately) derived from renewable energy sources. For example, by wind and solar technology or the processing of biomass (wood waste or organic waste). But beware: green electricity is not a protected term, why suppliers can define themselves when they talk about green electricity. Some providers promise their customers electricity, which according to their own statement is environmentally friendly and sustainable. However, they do not have to explain transparently how their offer is green. In this context, consumer shooters often warn against “gray-flow” – that is, electricity of unknown origin, which can come from both nuclear power plants and fossil fuels as well as from renewable sources.

The Federal Environment Agency, for example, speaks of “real” green electricity when it comes to electricity, that of a independent market electricity supplier so that neither fossil nor nuclear power generation is supported by the benefits of green electricity. In addition, genuine green electricity providers should invest in the expansion of renewable energies, such as wind and hydroelectric power plants, and only sell environmentally friendly electricity.

Renewable energies in Germany

In this country, green electricity comes mainly from wind and hydroelectric power, biomass and solar energy. In 2016, these have already contributed significantly to the generation of energy. After all, her share already made 29 percent of total electricity generation out. However, this is not enough to completely satisfy the demand for green electricity, which is why some suppliers source the majority of their green electricity from abroad.
