Laptop test 2019: which is the best? •

The best laptop

Mike Wobker

The best laptop for us remains the Dell XPS 13 – now in the updated version of the year 2019: It comes with current hardware, also the less advantageous placement of the webcam has changed, now it sits where it should be, namely at the top screen. Nevertheless, the Dell XPS 13 9380 still convinces with a very narrow screen frame. The 13 incher is pleasantly small, light and thin, yet powerful in every way.

Update September 10, 2019

Current top notebooks are just the universal mobile devices that every notebook owner dreamed of years ago. Thanks to high performance, high-resolution displays and simultaneously increasing battery life and low weight, the mobile devices can cope with almost any requirement. Nobody needs a desktop computer anymore.

However, the powerful mobile computers have their price. But for those who use a laptop to work, worth the purchase, after all, spend nowadays most of the working day in front of the computer.

We looked at the most interesting models for you. Here are our current recommendations:

Short overview: Our recommendations

Dell XPS 13 9380 (FHD)

With the updated edition of the XPS 13, Dell once again delivers the best overall result. Compared to its predecessor, the excellent performance has improved again. The processor uses a powerful and energy-saving model of the latest Whiskey Lake generation and enables a productive everyday life. The crystal-clear screen ensures the best quality images and videos, and the battery will last a full day. In short: The Dell XPS 13 9380 is a completely successful notebook.

Huawei MateBook 13

Now that Huawei, as a newcomer, has already received a recommendation from us for another notebook, it’s time for the powerful Huawei MateBook 13 to be released. With a current Intel Core processor of the Whiskey Lake generation is not only ensured high performance, but also a good battery life. The 3: 2 touch screen also offers high resolution and crystal clear colors. The Nvidia graphics card is also sufficient for occasional games sessions and you have to make friends only with the very low selection of connections.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is now available in the 6th generation. Although it is designed for the business sector, it can also compete visually with our test candidates. The lavish amenities include twice Thunderbolt 3 in addition to HDMI and regular USB ports. Even an LTE module is integrated to insert a SIM card and connect to the Internet via a mobile data plan. The built-in hardware is more or less the same as the alternatives listed above, which is why the Thinkpad does not go limp in productive everyday life.

Asus ZenBook Pro 14

Asus shows with the ZenBook Pro 14 that notebook innovations are still possible. What looks like bauble is a practical feature in the end. Instead of a touchpad Asus installed a so-called screenpad, which is available as a small touchscreen with various apps. Thus, calculator or calendar can be displayed on the small screen, but also as a second screen may serve the pad. The performance is even on a multimedia level with a current Whiskey Lake CPU and a fast Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q and allows computer games on medium graphics levels.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 (with touchbar)

Apple treats the MacBook Pro even in 2019 a small update, so that now the cheaper model with touchbar are delivered. You will still be able to access four Thunderbolt ports. Since they are the only ports, an adapter for other devices remains almost mandatory. The cooling is still working at the limit, which is why the Apple computer runs out of steam for demanding tasks quickly. For everyday use, the MacBook Pro is still suitable and the chic design is rounded off with the interactive touchbar. The battery life can also keep up with our competitors – as well as the price, at least for the basic version.

Not faster, but more economical

The update of the Intel processors with the code name Kaby Lake does not provide massive performance boosts, but they work even more efficiently. They still support UHD video formats without generating much load and consuming power. A maximum of 15 watts take the common chips with the U-appendage in the name – under full load. If, for example, only a high-resolution video is watched, it is even significantly less. With our new favorite, the Dell XPS 13 9380, the first processor of the Whiskey Lake generation is finding its way into our recommendations. This offers the same energy-saving design, but can again record a good plus in performance.

Such economical chips require neither costly cooling nor oversized batteries, which can shrink the housing sizes. Quite silent, this does not work in contrast to the weaker Core-m processors, but in most usage situations, nothing is heard even in the stylish, flat and up-to-date notebooks.

Display is more important than processor

SSD storage is part of every new notebook, but if the operating system is started from a hard disk instead, it feels as good as any work on the notebook – anyone who has ever experienced the difference will never again be without an SSD want.

Great leaps in computing power are not expected in the processors in the coming years. Therefore, the quality of the display is the most important criterion for a new acquisition at the moment if you want to have fun with the device in the long term. Handy ultrabooks with 13-inch diagonal display should resolve at least 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, even more brilliant image appears on notebooks with ultra-high-resolution QHD displays with 3200 x 1800 pixels. Thanks to the display scaling of Windows 10, even tiny icons and fonts are no longer to be feared.

That’s why the MacBook Air, which we have long favored as the best laptop for most, is no longer recommended. With the MacBook Air, Apple had founded the division of small, lightweight laptops and breathed new life into the weakening notebook market. The Windows world had nothing to oppose for a long time. Both in terms of price and in terms of performance and build quality, the MacBook Air could not hold its own for years. This has changed a lot in recent years.

Apple has finally improved

While the Windows counterparts have continued to catch up technically, Apple has neglected its laptops the last few years criminally. Not only the MacBook Air, but also the MacBook Pro has been updated barely or not at all for years. Fortunately, that has changed again, especially in the battery life of the new Macbook Pro Apple has improved a lot. Nice and bitterly needed was the update to the current Intel CPU architecture. But you still have to get used to the still very high prices.

The fact that Apple on the MacBook Pro fully relies on USB-C and has deleted all other ports, on the other hand, for the Californian tradition: Apple has always been very brave in cutting off old technology braids. Many are likely to have fewer problems than the loud cry of the technology press would suggest, because in times of wireless communication, most of the connections use only rarely or not at all.

Apple had to plug in the Macbook much criticism

The biggest criticism of the first MacBook Pro came from Apple’s regular customers, because the MacBook Pro may be a worthy successor of the MacBook Air or the MacBooks, but for professional users, it was simply not “pro” enough: they are not just missing other connectors, they would also like more power and especially more memory under the hood – no matter what the price.

For less demanding users, the MacBook Pro is rather expensive for what it offers. Since you get now in the Windows world more power at a lower price.

Dell offers the XPS 13, an adequate and much cheaper Windows counterpart to the MacBook, which is getting better every year. But also Huawei has with the MateBook X Pro a great competitor to the traditional manufacturers in the market. Lenovo continues to serve the business market very successfully with the Thinkpad Carbon X1.

Our current favorite is the Dell XPS 13 9380 with Intel Core i7-8565U, 16 gigabytes of RAM and a 512 gigabyte SSD. Unlike its predecessor, Dell says goodbye to the webcam under the screen. Thanks to its reduced size, it now finds its place in the upper frame without having to widen it.

Our favorite: Dell XPS 13 9380

Even if you have to take a closer look to see the difference to the predecessor Dell XPS 13 9370, the manufacturer has changed some things – sometimes for the better, but sometimes also for the negative. Nevertheless, the new Dell XPS 13 9380 is our test winner, because there are hardly any comparable notebooks that offer such a build quality, battery life and performance in such a compact format.

Dell XPS 13 9380 (FHD)

Connections and screen

In terms of interfaces, Dell has made no changes. Dell also uses two Thunderbolt ports and a USB 3.1 Type C port for the XPS 9380. This leaves users with only the much smaller connector available to replace the traditional Type A port.

Three sockets are available, two of which are equipped with the Thunderbolt 3 standard: not only can the notebook battery be charged via the interfaces, but also the image output to two 4K monitors via a single connection is possible. In addition, data can be transmitted at up to 40 gigabits per second. Even USB 3.1 Gen 2 comes “only” to a maximum of 10 gigabits per second.

Dell uses only USB Type-C

But the topicality of the conventional, widespread USB Type A connections are also a victim. If you want to connect a USB stick or an external hard drive, you will need an adapter – at least Dell will supply it as standard. Storage media with Type C plugs are not yet widespread, even though the trend towards the newer standard is becoming ever clearer.

The memory card reader is still shrunk on the Dell XPS 13 9380 and can only hold MicroSD memory cards.

This change leaves us still zwiegespalten back, because who wants to pull his pictures from the camera on the notebook, must now fall back on an adapter card. Löblich: However, a 3.5-millimeter jack connection is still on board.

In order for devices in this device class to stay as slim as they are known, the Gigabit Ethernet port usually has to give way – that’s the same with the Dell. But thanks to fast Wi-Fi technologies, this is no longer absolutely necessary, which is why we do not think it’s a bad thing about the Dell XPS 13.

If you need even more connections, you should take a look at our business alternative, the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon. In addition to regular USB Type-A sockets, it also offers Thunderbolt 3, HDMI and a full-fledged network connection.

While our previous recommendation, the Dell XPS 13 9370, had the webcam in favor of the design at the bottom of the screen, it now sits above the display again. Dell has downsized the camera so much that it even finds its place in the extremely narrow frame. The perspective is extremely beneficial because the view from below was not very optimal.

Dell manages to make the screen frame very narrow, making the XPS 13 much more manageable than other 13-inch notebooks without sacrificing comfort. The display edge now measures only four millimeters and is thus 23 percent thinner than the previous model.

The webcam is so small that the diameter is just 2.25 millimeters.

In order to give the screen the necessary stability, Dell generally uses a glass pane – regardless of which display variant. This provides unsightly reflections that can interfere with work. Although the high brightness of the screen still makes up for this, it is of course also draining the battery life.

Nevertheless, we can certainly praise the screen. Touch capabilities are available at an additional cost, so that the notebook can not only be operated classically via trackpad, but also directly on the screen. While this is not absolutely necessary with a notebook, many find a touchscreen even more practical than, say, the MacBook Pro’s TouchBar – but that’s a matter of taste.

Touch screen is available at an additional cost, but also without convinced the screen

Otherwise, the display impresses: The narrow bezel gives the impression of looking at an almost borderless screen. As a result, the image area is larger. Thanks to the IPS panel, the colors are very intense and the contrasts are exceptionally good. The viewing angle stability is consistently high.

power

Intel is equipping the new Dell XPS 13 9380 with a current Core i generation Whiskey Lake processor. Our recommendation is equipped with the Intel Core i7-8656U. You can also choose from the cheaper, but somewhat lower-power Core i5-8265U and Core i3-8145U. The new i7 is the direct successor to the Intel Core i7-8550U from its predecessor, but this version offers up to 600 megahertz higher turbo cycle. Despite its energy-saving design, the new processor requires a bit more power to deliver its full performance, which negatively impacts battery life.

Otherwise, everything is as usual when you compare the CPU with the predecessor. Among other things, the processor masters modern video capabilities and the liquid 4K output via Thunderbolt. This allows you to play H.265-format high-resolution video with minimal processor load. Advantage: The battery is much less stressed, the laptop gets less hot and the fan has to work less.

When it comes to the cooling system, Dell uses the tried and tested XPS 13 9380: Inside, two fans perform their duties and the additional insulation called “Gore Thermal Insulation” is also available. The derives better from the waste heat of the hardware and should avoid single, hot spots (hotspots).

New processor with even more power

In daily operation, the new CPU makes for a significant leap forward in performance. Office applications and image editing programs are running a bit faster than before, and the super-fast SSD hard drive lets users forget loading times altogether. Since only the integrated graphics unit Intel UHD Graphics 620 is responsible for the display of image content, the small Dell notebook is not suitable for games. Apart from that, however, many usage scenarios are conceivable, as long as no strong graphics card is needed.

If the CPU and graphics unit are under heavy stress at the same time, the Dell XPS 13 9380 will be noticeably warm, albeit not disturbing, despite the revised cooling. In terms of the slim design, but that is definitely to get over. If the high load remains for a long time, the performance can break somewhat due to the high temperatures inside. In normal use, this should hardly happen.

And what about the fan noise? The fans hold back so well at low load that they are not audible. Under load, they turn on, but are not quite as loud. Noise is still audible, but browsing the web or editing a Word document does not require a fan. However, the best CPU is useless if the mass storage is the bottleneck and a slow hard drive fights with the flood of data of the operating system. Dell is therefore, as well as Apple, Huawei and Lenovo, on a fast SSD.

In the recommended version of the Dell XPS 13 9380, users have a 512 GB SSD available. This was a space-saving M.2 model, which is not limited by the SATA interface, but is connected via PCIe. This allows the drive to achieve very high read speeds.

Mobility and feel

The Dell XPS 13 is also in the 9380 version of one of the smallest 13-inch notebook, which is mainly due to the very narrow display frame. If the webcam on the predecessor still had to walk under the screen to realize the narrow edges, Dell could now position it over the display again. The design remains as narrow as before, so the screen area is still very large.

Nobody has to do without comfort when writing. The keys have a noticeable lift and are not too small for prolific typists. Convenient is the backlight of the keyboard, which shows the labeling of the keys even in poor lighting. The large touchpad also works reliably and provides good feedback.

The input devices are also suitable for prolific writers.

At only 1.2 kilograms, the notebook is very light and therefore hardly noticeable on the go. Nevertheless, the Dell XPS 13 9380 is sufficiently sturdily built to be used on the legs instead of on a table – this is where combi devices such as the Microsoft Surface with its display dock as a lab-worn keyboard reach their limits. The device has a robust feel thanks to the material chosen by the manufacturer. The case was milled out of an aluminum block, which adds elegance and robustness to the outsides of the notebook. The edging and the palm rest, on the other hand, are made of braided carbon fibers, which despite their low weight are very hard-wearing.

The XPS 13 9380 is available in three color options: rose gold or alpine white – the classic platinum gray is also available.

Color variants of the Dell XPS 13 9380.

Battery life

After the battery life already slightly lower in the Dell XPS 13 9370, the small notebook comes in the newest form with even shorter runtimes.

The battery capacity has remained the same with 52 watt-hours, but the slightly higher performance of the new processor has a negative effect on this point. However, the term is not a short time yet, but still reaches a proud 11 hours. Thus, the charger can also be forgotten at home, without the Dell XPS 13 9380 runs out of breath.

The battery life is still hard to beat and even if the tasks are demanding, the battery does not hide. If many actions are combined, the XPS 13 9380 will still last a long time. To survive a full day of work without recharging the battery is also possible with the new version of the Dell XPS 13 again.

weaknesses?

Even with this model, unfortunately, there are some things that we noticed negatively. Away from the glossy display, which is difficult to work in very bright environments, we still do not quite agree with completely abandoning conventional USB Type-A jacks. It’s just annoying to have to plug in an adapter for a simple USB stick. Switching from a regular memory card reader to a micro SD variant also annoys the user more than makes him useful.

Dell XPS 13 9370 in the test mirror

The colleagues of other publications are enthusiastic about our recommendation Dell XPS 9380. Techtechts (02/2019) especially highlights the excellent workmanship:

»Especially the case is exemplary with this! It is super compact, but at the same time very stable and robust. Also, the palm rest made of carbon fiber fabric ensures a very pleasant sense of use. This is also clearly supported by the very good keyboard and the good trackpad, in which Dell has not allowed a mistake. «

Tester Michael Barton is also critical of the sunken battery life:

“I’m a little bit torn by the battery life. This is okay with + – 7 hours on my 4K model. You can work well with that, especially as you can load the XPS 13 via Powerbanks. But here I have the feeling there is still some room for improvement. “

In the extensive test by Notebookcheck (02/2019), performance and cooling are valued among other things. There, however, the slightly slower model with Intel Core i5-8265U was tested:

“Dell obviously revised the temperature control. Compared to the quad-core processor from 2018, the performance has improved, but only in the scenario of a permanent load. While with many ultrabooks the clock is permanently reduced at high load, in order to reduce the waste heat production, the XPS tirelessly drives into the high turbo range again and again. «

In the test on techq.eu 01/2019, the repositioning of the webcam is discussed, but the rest of the design is not very enthusiastic:

“With last year’s model undergoing a major overhaul, Dell barely improved on the almost perfect laptop. The repositioning of the webcam is for some people just do not care, but for others a real blessing. Otherwise, the XPS 13 has almost the same design and here and there just a few minor upgrades. «

The international press has almost only words of praise for the Dell notebook – as the test report from PCMag (02/2019) shows:
