How does LASIK work??
The Greek doctor Ioannis Pallikaris developed the procedure in 1989. He combined two methods: on the one hand, a very thin layer is folded up in a disk shape on the surface of the cornea (epithelium). This is the so-called flap. Then we worked the underlying layer with a very fine laser. Either the area in the center is flattened or the outer edges are removed. Then the flap is folded down again.
Decisive for the eye laser is the cornea of the eye. It is processed in the process so that its refractive power changes. First, the cornea is cut in a circle and the top layer folded up as a so-called flap. Subsequently, the cornea is adjusted with an ultrafine laser beam. Then the eye is thoroughly rinsed and the flap folded back. The whole thing is almost painless and only takes a few minutes.
What is the purpose of the flap??
The idea of Pallikaris to fold up the outer cornea and down again after eye-lightening was brilliant. Because this avoids a longer healing process. The surface is accustomed per se to the harsh external weather conditions and works perfectly with the tear fluid, which wets the eye with a lubricating film to ensure the smooth movement of the eyelids. Previously, the surface itself had been removed to change the refractive power of the eye. The subsequent healing process took a correspondingly long time: the surface of the cornea first had to be regenerated. All this is eliminated with the LASIK procedure.
Never again wear glasses after LASIK surgery?
After the LASIK surgery, you can almost immediately see without visual aids again. But: of course, like the entire body, the eyes are subject to a natural growth or aging process. It may well be that a refractive error increases somewhat over the years, usually it affects the presbyopia. In that case, after a few years / decades, you might have to have another Lasik operation performed – or just wear a visual aid, usually reading glasses.
