What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide, called nitrous oxide, or N20 for short, is a non-allergenic, non-irritating gas that affects the central nervous system. It has been used successfully in medicine for more than 150 years, especially for the treatment of anxious patients.
How does nitrous oxide??
Through a small nasal mask (with various selectable, pleasant scents), a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is supplied. The concentration of nitrous oxide is adjusted individually and gradually increased until a pleasant and relaxed feeling arises. You determine yourself when this condition is reached (i.d.R. after about 4 to 5 minutes).
After completion of the dental treatment, inhale oxygen for a few minutes until the effect of the nitrous oxide is completely removed.
Then you can leave the practice without an attendant and without any impairment.
The nitrous oxide helps to relax in the dental treatment and reduce anxiety. Just like the fear, the sense of pain decreases as well. At the same time one is always conscious and responsive during the treatment.
What do you feel?
Patients describe the feeling of laughing gas treatment as
- Tingling of the hands and feet
- warm feeling
- Shortened sense of time
- Deep relaxation
- Feeling of lightness or heaviness
Are there any risks in laughing gas treatment??
The nitrous oxide sedation is a very safe and low-complication process, which is used millions of times worldwide. Since nitrous oxide is not metabolised by the body, but exhaled completely, there are no complications. Very rarely it can cause nausea or dizziness, which can be reversed after switching off the supply of nitrous oxide and by inhaling oxygen again. Therefore, this method is also suitable for the dental treatment of children.
There are only a few contraindications that exclude laughing gas. These include u.a. Eye surgery (vitrectomy), nasal obstruction, ileus or pregnancy. This can be clarified by your dentist in a preliminary discussion, so that risks can be excluded.
Important is, that we know your health before the treatment! Therefore, please inform us about any medications you are taking, drugs, alcohol or sedatives and about existing illnesses and surgeries.
Recommended, Take a light meal before treatment and do not eat or drink for about 2 hours before the appointment.
For pregnant women, nitrous oxide sedation is not suitable. During treatment, pregnant women should not be in the treatment room.
What is the cost of laughing gas treatment??
The cost of laughing gas treatment depends on the duration of the dental treatment. In addition, you acquire your own nasal mask, whose scent direction you can choose at will.
