Learning a study with fun: all survey results in detail

Do children enjoy learning at school? We asked students and parents. Here you will find the results of the Learning with Fun study at a glance.

Do children like going to school in Germany? Do you enjoy learning in and for school? And what do the students want for their lessons? As part of our large study Learning with Fun, together with the children’s magazine ZEIT LEO we asked 860 children aged six to 13 and parents of school-age children on this subject.

Enjoy learning for school?

More than half of all students sometimes enjoy learning at school. Nearly a third always. However, the fun decreases rapidly with increasing age.

Younger children prefer to learn with their parents or with the teacher in class. The older the children are, the more they prefer to learn alone.

Children of all ages have the most fun learning with electronic media such as computers, tablets or smartphones. The boys’ preference for electronic media is particularly pronounced. Girls prefer reading to boys.

How do you best keep something?

Children retain facts best when they are embedded in an exciting story. Students can also remember topics that they know from everyday life. Practical relevance plays a greater role for boys than for girls. Girls, on the other hand, keep things by memorizing more often.

What would have to happen to make learning more fun??

More project weeks and no more homework: these are the pupils’ ideas, as the Learning could be even more fun. According to surveys on the fun of learning, girls in particular want more project lessons. Boys want to do more tasks on the computer.

1,005 women and men aged 25 to 29 with school-age children up to 13 years in the household were surveyed.

How important is it to you that your child enjoys learning?

99 percent of all mothers and fathers want your child to have fun learning. This is very important for three out of four respondents.

The child likes to go to school. For parents, this is the most important indication that their child has fun learning.

Most parents are convinced that their child prefers to learn practically using examples. Every fifth parent estimates that learning on the computer is the most fun for children.
