Private liability: How long are children insured with their parents

In private liability insurance, children are automatically insured with their parents in a so-called family tariff. If the policyholder takes out a corresponding policy, there is also insurance cover for children living in the household. These family policies are usually only marginally more expensive than single policies and are highly recommended for every family. In the event of damage caused to third parties, private liability covers the costs of claims for damages and, if necessary, even pays millions in damages. The conditions under which and how long children are covered by the parents should be explained below.

Minor children in private liability: How long are children insured with their parents?

Minor children are generally included in the scope of insurance for private liability. It is irrelevant here whether it is your own children or step-children, adoptive children or foster children. However, the prerequisite for the children to be insured with the parents is that they live with the household and are not married. Under certain circumstances, grandchildren (if their own child is still living in the household) are also included in the private liability insurance cover.

As a special feature, however, it should be noted that children under seven years of age (in road traffic under ten years) are incapable of torture according to the applicable German law and therefore cannot be held liable for any damage they cause. If children who are incapable of offense are not explicitly insured in private liability, corresponding insurance protection is not necessary, so that children who are unable to offend are not included in the scope of private liability benefits.

Adult children under private liability: How long are children insured with their parents?

Children of legal age can also continue to be insured through their parents’ personal liability.

The question of how long are children insured with their parents can be answered for children of legal age using the following criteria:

  • The child is not married.
  • The child still lives in the same household (deviations are possible depending on the policy).
  • The child is still going to school.
  • The child is studying or undergoing vocational training.
  • The child starts studying after completing training.
  • The child is completing a voluntary social year or the federal voluntary service.
  • The child has not reached a certain age (depending on the insurer between 25 and 30 years).

In the following cases, however, the adult child has to cover his own personal liability and is no longer insured with the parents:

  • The child is undergoing a second apprenticeship.
  • The child begins a second degree.
  • The child becomes employed.
  • The child starts a legal clerkship.
  • The child becomes a professional soldier.

The answer to the question of how long are children insured with their parents depends on several factors and is not limited to a time specification. Check your private liability insurance cover regularly and adjust it to the changing conditions if necessary. It is not to be expected that private liability will draw your attention to this when the insurance coverage for a child expires, you have to take care of your own new insurance yourself.

A special feature applies to au pairs, exchange students and nannies: If they stay in the insured household for a long time, they can also be insured as children with the parents through private liability. However, it should be noted that the insurance cover for private liability is limited in time and, for example, only applies for twelve months depending on the provider.
