In principle, fever makes sense – because it supports the immune system in fighting off pathogens. And yet there are sometimes good reasons to lower the fever. Read more about it here.

What is fever?

Doctors speak of fever when the body temperature rises above 38 degrees Celsius. Fever is not an independent disease, but occurs, for example, with infections in order to render pathogens harmless.

Fever is considered a concern if the temperature rises above 39 degrees Celsius. If this is also found to be very stressful, the fever should be reduced. There are various options such as teas, medication, washes and calf wraps.

When does fever arise?

Fever arises, among other things, when there are infections with viruses or bacteria. This is often the case with flu and infections. But other diseases can also be accompanied by fever: rheumatic diseases, surgical interventions, injuries and tumors. However, fever often occurs without a recognizable cause.

Is the fever from a cold or flu very high, it can be stressful for the body. Circulatory problems, which can be associated with an increase or decrease in blood pressure, can then occur, especially in older people with heart problems. In that case, it makes sense to lower the fever.

When and how can fever be reduced in adults?

Although fever is usually useful and supports the body’s defenses, the sick often feel tired and exhausted. It makes sense to lower the fever,

  • if you feel very unwell or have circulatory problems
  • if you are in pain
  • when the fever reaches temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius

The following options are available to lower the fever or at least to alleviate the symptoms:

Sweaty tea enjoyment

Linden blossom and elderflower tea is said to have You one have a sweating effect and thereby lower fever. Because: Sweating is a natural reaction at an elevated temperature and cools the body down. You can drink three to five cups a day.

Antipyretic tea

Tea from the somewhat forgotten meadowsweet herb is said to have an antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect. If the tea is drunk hot, it also has a sweaty effect, which also helps to lower fever.

Put on the calf wrap

Calf wraps are a proven way to reduce fever by about a degree. However, these should only be used when hands and feet are warm. To do this, dampen cloths with lukewarm water (16 – 20 ° C) and tie them around your calves. In addition, wrap a dry cloth around the calf wrap. The dampened wipes can be replaced every ten minutes. The application should not last longer than a half hour last for. Then check the temperature.

Cool washes

If calf wraps are too uncomfortable for you, you can try to lower the fever with cooling washes. A sponge is soaked in warm water and the body is washed off. Start with the right leg and continue with the left. Then rub the right and then the left arm. Do not dry off the body parts afterwards, but only cover them with a thin cloth.

Drink enough

Those who have a fever need more fluids than usual. This is partly due to the infection, but mainly due to the intense sweating with fever, which causes the body to lose a lot of fluid. Therefore, as a rule of thumb: for every degree of body temperature above 37 degrees Celsius, drink an additional half a liter, but at least two liters a day. Water, unsweetened tea and heavily diluted fruit juices are suitable. This can help to lower the fever.

Light meals

Fever can be very strenuous for the body and, above all, strain the cardiovascular system. Heavy meals are not advisable at this time, because they require a lot of digestive work and would cost the organism additional strength. Light dishes such as hot chicken soup or yogurt with fruit are more suitable. A vitamin-rich diet supports the healing process and strengthens the immune system.
