MBA Studies: Prerequisite (s)

What requirements do you have to fulfill in order to start an MBA? Depending on the university and the country, there are different conditions for enrollment. And you should also have certain personal qualifications to successfully complete an MBA. We have an overview.

In a nutshell: whoever wants to start an MBA and then successfully complete it, should bring along:

Mind. one to two years work experience
Good English knowledge
Normally a first degree (but exceptions, see above)
Ambition and determination
An environment that accepts your additional workload

Formal requirements

For the most part, universities have very similar formal requirements for their MBA programs:

First university degree

For about 98% of the German MBA is a first university degree, ie Bachelor, Diplom, Magister o.Ä. expected. Not infrequently is also required, this first degree should comprise 210 ECTS. There is hardly an MBA that does not require at least one year of work experience as a prerequisite. Partially up to five years of professional experience the condition.

Language skills (TOEFL / IELTS)

Many MBA from German universities also treat a larger part of the study content in English. Therefore, good foreign language skills are essential. For their proof must be as Requirement often a TOEFL or IELTS be detected with a certain score.

Motivation letter

Why do you want to study an MBA? And why at the chosen university? These are the two key questions that you need to answer in a letter of motivation. In addition to the tabular information on the person (eg CV), the universities want to get a better picture of the applicant with this MBA requirement.

Studying will not be a walk, you are certainly aware of that. An MBA should only be taken by those who have the motivation to spend months, in addition to the usual work routine (in the vast majority of cases, study extra-occupational) also time and strength to invest in learning.

You should therefore try to assess yourself objectively:

Am I single-minded enough?
Do I have a high energy level or after a hard working week? still power reserves?
Do I have the required conflict resolution potential, e.g. the partner of Lernstress annoyed or the boss requires overtime?
How about mine teamwork? In the MBA one studies in groups, since a certain team ability is a basic requirement.

Admission to the MBA is usually decided on the basis of an overall view of the application material. There are some basic conditions (Depending on the study program, for example, the first degree), which must be fulfilled in order to be enrolled. But there are also “softer” conditions (maybe you will also be enrolled with one instead of two years of work experience).
